Catholic Priest Unalifes Himself In The US After Order To Return To Nigeria

A 54 year old Nigerian priest Reverend Benjamin Okwy Madu who was serving in Massachusetts allegedly unalifed himself at his home in Lynnfield on July 2, 2026, days after church leaders told him to return to Nigeria.

Father Madu had worked as a hospital chaplain and parish priest in the Archdiocese of Boston since 2021. He served communities on Cape Ann and was well liked for his kind and joyful nature.
His religious worker visa was set to expire on July 29,2026 but his home Diocese of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State asked him to come back early for a new assignment starting in August.

Reports say the priest had shared his deep worry about going back to Nigeria and mentioned safety fears because of attacks on Catholic clergy in parts of the country.
In a farewell note to his parishioners, he called the United States his “home away from home” and said leaving was not his choice.
A few days before he passed, he suffered a panic attack while driving to say Mass.
The Archdiocese of Boston confirmed his passing as a “tragic death.” In a private message to other priests, Archbishop Richard Henning stated that Father Madu had unalifed himself.

  10. So what account would he give to his creator now? This is so wrong, he is supposed to lead by example as he is ordained to be a shepherd to the people of God against all odds
