According to the Presidency, the expansion aligns with Tinubu’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. It also builds on ongoing investments in defence, including the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, acquisition of new military platforms, improved troop welfare, and continuous support for force modernisation.
New Army Structure Across Nigeria
Under the new arrangement, the Nigerian Army will operate twelve divisions strategically positioned nationwide:
1 Division – Kaduna: Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa
2 Division – Ibadan: Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo
3 Division – Jos: Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe
5 Division – Makurdi: Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi
6 Division – Port Harcourt: Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River
7 Division – Maiduguri: Borno, Yobe
8 Division – Sokoto: Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara
9 Division – Ilorin: Kwara, Niger
10 Division – Jalingo: Taraba, Adamawa
81 Division – Lagos: Lagos, Ogun
82 Division – Enugu: Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo
83 Division – Benin City: Edo, Delta, Bayelsa
The newly established divisions in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City are expected to enhance command and control, decentralise decision‑making, strengthen border security, protect critical infrastructure, and improve counter‑insurgency operations nationwide.
Implementation Timeline
The expansion will be executed in two phases:
Phase 1: Establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions and reorganisation of existing formations — to be completed by September 2026.
Phase 2: Establishment of the 83 Division and further restructuring — to be completed by December 2026.
Tinubu Commends Army Leadership
President Tinubu praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and all officers and soldiers for their professionalism and dedication to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the Armed Forces remain well‑equipped, motivated, and capable of protecting citizens across the country.
