A couple of days ago I was talking with someone about relocation, and she was surprised by what I said.

I told her I no longer have the same enthusiasm for traveling abroad that I had a few years ago. I think it comes with age. There comes a point in life when things that used to excite you just stop doing that. In my 20s and early 30s, I would have jumped at the idea of relocating abroad but not anymore. Not at this stage of my life.
What changed?
Right now I just want to be home, close to my big family. When I see siblings scattered across different countries, all I can think about is the vacuum their absence creates. I have friends who couldn’t fly in when they lost a parent, not even for the burial. Sometimes it’s distance, sometimes finances, sometimes visas. And I’ve seen people lose family back home because they couldn’t make it back to their roots.
I once watched an elderly man plead with his daughter and son-in-law to let him go back home to Nigeria. Their refusal was because of insecurity, but he wasn’t having it. As humans, a few things do change with age. In my 20s and 30s it was about exploration. Now it’s about stability, family, and peace.

Starting over isn’t as easy as it sounds. I’d understand it more if I were much younger, or if I were relocating with family for a specific job. But not for a fresh beginning from zero. I’m not saying this to discourage anyone. This is just how I feel. Travel for business or holiday? Yes. Relocate? Definitely no.
Energy is a factor too. Relocating is stressful, and the appetite for risk and "hustle from zero" reduces. Also, perspective matters. You realize home isn’t just a location, It’s people, culture, and where you feel you belong. Though this doesn’t make one choice better than the other. It just means priorities shift. And that’s valid.

Let's create this scenario TJ, you successfully complete your cyber security program, in this course of applying for job here and there online, you come across abroad (Canada) job opportunity that you qualify for, and one of the benefits that comes with it, is fully funded relocation package. Does that mean you won't apply for it?

Ever since I was born in Naija, na scratch i dey. What's relocation that i cant start from scratch. Abroad scratch better pass naija own.
ReplyDeleteTeejay your perceptive is actually based on the wrong side. What about families that are living comfortably abroad and visit home often?
ReplyDeleteDon't tell me as you have been struggling to succeed in Nigeria,if you eventually had an offer to live abroad with a good paying Job that you will decline. You are in 40s and still have chances to make it.
The aim is to be successful in whatever you are doing, whether you are home or abroad.
ReplyDeleteBeing successful is all the aim jare. Either home or abroad, just be consistent with whatever we do.
ReplyDeleteAgain, age is one of the parameters that one considered when it comes to relocating abroad.
I so much understand and can relate well
I have two men that relocated in their early fifties, one is 64 and the other one is 61, i can tell you for a fact that their famillies are really enjoying and very comfortable now.

If i have the opportunity....i will take it sharp sharp.

Make the sacrifice for some time and change your life and those of your other family members
