South Africa Slams $18.5 Million Repatriation Bill To Govts Of Nigeria, Ethiopia And Malawi

South Africa has formally issued a $18.5 million repatriation bill to the governments of Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Malawi, demanding reimbursement for the large‑scale evacuation and deportation of their citizens during the country’s intensified crackdown on undocumented migration.

According to South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, the government spent nearly R300 million (about $18.5 million) on repatriation operations ( a figure that far exceeded the department’s original budget).

The costs covered transportation, temporary repatriation centres, staff overtime, and logistics involved in processing tens of thousands of foreign nationals who either volunteered to return home or were deported.

Officials told lawmakers that over 82,000 migrants had been processed through repatriation centres since the operation began, with Malawians forming the largest group, followed by Zimbabweans and Mozambicans. Nigerian and Ethiopian nationals were also among those repatriated as anti‑immigrant protests and tensions escalated across South Africa.

The Home Affairs Ministry has already sent written requests to the embassies of Nigeria and Ethiopia, as well as the government of Malawi, seeking repayment for the expenses incurred.

The department described the costs as “unforeseen and unavoidable,” and noted that the surge in repatriations placed significant pressure on its immigration enforcement budget.

South Africa is now awaiting official responses from the three countries.

    It's their guts for.me.

They should just make arrangements to bring back all their citizens back to their county and fence their walls. And Completely cut off from all the nations of the world.
    Not just Africa.

  6. You know, any south Africans caught abroad doing something illegal, South Africans on social media blame it on Nigerians. Their modus operandi now is to say, those people are not south Africans, but Nigerians using South African passport. If a drug dealer is caught, they say the drug dealers must be working for Nigerians. Those South Africans have no joy at all..so, so bitter! They are on Nigerian Social media space just to say nasty things to Nigerians. The most bitter citizens of a country in Africa. What a shame! I don't even know what people see in that country that they keep travelling to..Even free ticket and expenses covered, I wouldn't even go there In shaa Allah.
