A surviving suspected illegal miner has given a chilling account of what happened inside the NSCDC cell in Minna. He said officers locked dozens of men inside a hot, overcrowded room and sprayed something, after which people began falling one after another.
He told Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji Ojo that officers first packed 17 men into a tiny room, added eight more, then moved them to an even hotter cell. Survivors said about 65 people were squeezed into a space with almost no ventilation, no water, and intense heat. Some drank their own urine. They banged on the door and shouted for help as men collapsed, but officers allegedly ignored them.At least 37 suspects died in NSCDC custody and while NSCDC initially suggested a disease outbreak, an intelligence report pointed to overcrowding and lack of air flow as the likely cause. Autopsies are ongoing.Minister Tunji Ojo has suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant and ordered a full investigation while President Tinubu also directed a transparent probe. Governor Umaru Bago confirmed the death toll and imposed a 24 hour curfew after protests erupted in Minna.
