The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced the implementation of a new framework to identify fake, cloned and non-compliant communication devices in Nigeria.
The commission said the initiative would help improve network performance, protect consumers and ensure that devices used in the country meet required standards.
The Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity at the NCC, Engr. Edoyemi Ogoh, disclosed this during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
He explained that the new system would allow the commission to verify approved devices electronically and prevent fake or non-compliant ones from connecting to telecommunications networks.
Ogoh said the NCC was working with the Nigeria Customs Service, manufacturers, importers and market associations to ensure effective implementation. He added that devices already in stock were being registered on the system, while newly imported devices would undergo verification.
The commission advised Nigerians to confirm that mobile phones, tablets, modems, Point of Sale (POS) terminals and other SIM-enabled devices have NCC Type Approval before purchasing them.
It warned that using non-compliant devices could affect network performance and urged consumers to buy approved products.
