Health Workers Begin 3 Day Warning Strike At FMC Abeokuta After Staff Stabbing

Health workers at the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta, including nurses, medical laboratory scientists and non academic staff, have begun a three day warning strike after a violent attack on one of their colleagues.

Mr Lawal Olasunkanmi, a medical laboratory scientist at the hospital, was reportedly stabbed on Sunday night by a patient’s relative.
The incident triggered immediate outrage among staff, who say violence against health workers has become too frequent and must be addressed urgently.
By Monday morning, workers withdrew their services, insisting the strike is to demand better security, protection and accountability for the attack.

  1. Sad news. Is the culprit mentally challenged?

    1. I doubt if the person is mentally challenged. It's probably a reaction from an occurrence in the hospital.
I remember something like this happened at FMC, Ebute Meta in 2024 when my son and I were admitted, it was at the emergency ward, a patient passed at night (an old man) and when the news was broken to the children that were around, the reaction of one of them brought fear into everyone in the ward, he became violent, destroyed some of the hospital properties, one or two nurses got injured in the cause of restraining him from entering the ward, everywhere became chaotic, eventually he was bundled out of the waiting room. I don't know what happened to the guy later but the few minutes display of anger was scary.

I hope the person has been arrested.

  2. Transfer of anger and aggression. Medical staff deserve protection and should be able to defend themselves in case of issues like this.

  4. This is really bad....in fact what is the result of the attack by DSS or is it EFCC on that government hospital in Cross River. I know my comment will be received badly but until all health workers down tools and insist on security , this will continue. How is it the fault of the health worker if the person dies. I know that some health workers nonchalant attitude can leave a lot to be desired but violence is not the answer. Some people will keep their person at home till the last minute to avoid the same hospital bills and then bring the person at the point of death and expect miracles. In fact let me come and be going....Naija matter dey too tire person.
