Guess what? Last night, I went out with my team, and somehow, somehow, I almost became an international karaoke celebrity!
The plan was simple: go out, have a few drinks, enjoy the night breeze and catch cruise with my colleagues but the unplanned happened.
We drove past Manyatta Disco Lounge, and something caught my eye. I spotted song lyrics on the wall and immediately wanted to check the place out.
My colleagues had another spot in mind, so we checked it out first. but the ambience didnt feel right so we returned to Manyatta.
I wasn't planning to perform o. I just wanted to enjoy myself but as soon as I settled down with my drink, I asked one of the waitresses how to submit songs for karaoke and before I knew it, I had written down SIX songs. Yes, Six!
Me that came to catch cruise.
My first song was ''All of Me'' by John Legend. I sang, people clapped, and I felt good. Then the manager approached me and asked if she could share a video of my performance on their Instagram page. and I excitedly agreed!

Who will turn down free publicity! Meanwhile, my own phone had been recording too, but guess what? The camera was facing my bottle of drink instead of me.
After a while, people started taking turns at the microphone, with the DJ playing music in between for those who wanted to dance. We had moved outside to enjoy the breeze because inside the lounge was got too hot.

When it was time for my second song, ''Can't Help Falling in Love'' by Elvis Presley, I got up and went straight inside for the microphone.
Omo, the applause after that song ehn! It was LOUD! People wanted to know where I was from, and when I said Nigeria, the reaction was something else. The manager even asked if I had ever considered going into music because, according to her, I could sing and hold a crowd.
I laughed o, because, have you seen the number of talented people Nigeria has produced? We already have one million and one singers. Abeg, I no dey do music. Leave me to enjoy my holiday!
Then something interesting happened.
A Kenyan man approached me, complimented my voice and asked if he could buy me a drink. I politely declined, but he insisted. Eventually, he explained that he was at the lounge with his girlfriend and simply wanted to appreciate my singing.
I relaxed, and he walked over to our table, greeted my colleagues and bought everyone a drink. The same drinks we were already having, nothing dramatic.
Later, my Kenyan colleague, Sinda, told me that the man had come to him to explain something in Swahili. Apparently, his girlfriend was feeling jealous, and he wanted Sinda to reassure her that he had only come to compliment my singing and buy us drinks. No number exchanged, no secret meeting, no nothing!
My people, I nearly fell down laughing. I did not travel all the way to Kenya to collect anybody's boyfriend. I have enough responsibilities waiting for me at home. Abeg!
The funniest part? When I got up to sing my third song, ''Jealous'' by Labrinth, this same man walked up to me, stood in front of me and started singing along, clearly enjoying himself. After my fourth song, ''Prisoner'' by Lucky Dube, he came back to greet me again.
Then somebody else took the microphone. I turned to see who was singing, and guess who it was? THE GIRLFRIEND!
Yes o! Madam had joined the karaoke party too! Music is for everybody, and nobody should have to sit out a good karaoke night.
And that was how I went out in Diani to have a few drinks and enjoy myself, only to sing FOUR out of the SIX songs I had written down.
Sometimes you don't plan the best moments of a trip. You just show up, follow the music and let the night happen.
IT'S RON

Deleteππ Ron, you went out to catch cruise and ended up giving Diani a free concert! The funniest part is Madam eventually joining the karaoke herself. Maybe the music settled what words couldn't. π€£❤️ Sometimes, all you need is a good voice, good music and the right atmosphere. Enjoy your holiday, Ron!

DeleteRon! Ron!! Ron!!! How many times did I call you?π
ReplyDeleteThough you were an accidental character in their drama, you unintentionally ended looking like a mini troublemaker ooo
After the 'poor' man had already explained to his girlfriend his interaction was innocent, you without having that knowledge of the tension between them, decided to sing jealous by labyrinth then you later sang prisoner?π
That was what made it such a comedic coincidence because all your selected song titles in the eyes of the girlfriend happened to fit the social atmosphere of that evening. She just had to loosen up fast and join the fun.π€£
I really enjoyed this piece. Thanks.
OMG! I didn't see it that way π€£π€£
DeleteThe choice of songs was causing some serious confusion in their camp. π€£
So, if I had sang the 5th song, "Dance With My Father", the guy would've returned to dance with me, right?π€£π€£
