  12. Lagos To Demolish Fire-Ravaged GNI House 10 Months After Christmas Eve Inferno

The Lagos State Government is set to bring down the burnt 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Martins Street, Lagos Island. The building was gutted by a devastating fire on December 24, 2025, and this caused extensive damage, a partial collapse, and spread to nearby shops and buildings. After months of recovery operations, the death toll rose to 12 when additional bodies were recovered in January 2026. Following structural assessments, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says the fire weakened the core frame of the building beyond repair, making it unsafe and a collapse risk to the busy market area. The controlled demolition has now been scheduled to commence today, Thursday, October 15, 2026, under strict safety measures. The area around the building will be cordoned off, with temporary traffic diversions on adjoining roads. Residents, traders, and motorists have been advised to avoid the area and cooperate with emergency responders during the exercise.

  14. Shell, the British Energy giant, has moved to exit Nigeria’s domestic gas distribution business after more than 25 years of operation in the country. The company announced on Tuesday, October 14, that it has agreed to sell its entire interest in Shell Nigeria Gas Group (SNG) to indigenous energy firm Vaaris Energy Limited and the deal was also announced by Shell Petroleum B.V. and is subject to regulatory approvals, though the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The sale covers Shell Nigeria Gas Holding B.V., which holds all but one of the shares in SNG Limited. This latest divestment pushes Shell’s restructuring beyond its historic exit from onshore oil production and into domestic gas distribution. The company said it is now concentrating its remaining investments in Nigeria on deepwater oil and gas and integrated gas, including its 25.6% stake in Nigeria LNG.

Established in 1998, Shell Nigeria Gas has grown to become a major supplier of natural gas to industrial and commercial customers. The company operates about 170 kilometres of gas pipeline infrastructure across Ogun, Abia, and Rivers states, serving more than 130 industrial and commercial customers.
