Nigerians send nearly €500m a year home from Ireland

NIGERIAN migrants in Ireland are now sending nearly half-a-billion euro back home each year. World Bank figures reveal that €468m in 'remittances' was sent from Ireland to Nigeria in 2011.
That's an average of more than €26,000 for each of the 17,642 Nigerian nationals in Ireland, including children.

This is far in excess of the sums sent home by Poles from Ireland. They sent $224m (€174m), even though there are more than 122,000 Polish people in the country.
The issue will be raised during a Dail debate this week on the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) (Amendment) that are being rushed through in advance of the forthcoming G8 summit in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh next month.
Fianna Fail's justice spokesman, Niall Collins, will raise the issue of Nigerian remittances with Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
He said: "It raises a number of questions. There may be legitimate and valid reason for the extremely large amounts of money being sent from Ireland to Nigeria, compared with the amounts sent by other nationalities.
"On the face of it, it has to be questioned. I will be asking the minister to investigate and find out why."

  3. LETTER TO MY PORN STAR SISTER, AFROCANDY
    Dear Judith Opara Mazagwu,
Whenever I eventually meet you the daring she-dog in person, I shall ask effusively: “Nwanne nwanyi, I bu onye Igbo?” If your answer is affirmative, I shall yell: “Tufia!!!” to high heavens and probe further: “Nna gi na nne gi, ha bu cha ndigbo? Is your father and mother originally Igbos?” If you, the architect of whore-llywood, return a negative answer, I shall heave the deepest sigh of relief and dance with reckless abandon. I shall wail with anguish if your parents are truly of the noble Igbo stock.
Opara’s daughter, what has the Igbos who pride their women in purity, decorum and royalty done to you? What has Ikemba’s people done to deserve the putrid essence you displayed in that raunchy movie trailer? The dignity of womanhood, you desecrated shamelessly. You should have converted your nomenclature to that of the animal kingdom before you set the cameras rolling. Who called the shots for filming that monstrosity that debased womanhood and motherhood? Yes, you suffered child abuse but how does being raped at the age of 19 confer a porn star designation? Who sponsored the spread of your genitals in public sphere with that pervert who wants his scenes deleted after the collateral damage had been done? I hope a copy of Destructive Instinct will be delivered to Censors Board in Nigeria for classification.
Judith Opara, that bald headed bloke was actually squeezing, kissing and caressing your buttocks and boobs on camera while you were letting out uhhhs and ahhhs? You had the nerve to upload same online? What manner of poverty configured the mental faculties of a 41 year old mother of two to engage in pornography and display the sex tape on the internet without consideration for her children’s future? It is an abomination in Igbo land nay Africa for a child to behold his mother in such intense sexing expedition. Not even sex starved rapists dare to devour a victim before her child’s very eyes. I hope your children will never watch Destructive Instinct, the atrocity you produced.
Until we can trace your lineage to Igbo kindred, I doubt the language of your name. I challenge your brothers, sisters, cousins aunts, uncles (your parents are most definitely dead), friends, relatives, classmates etc to write a rejoinder and authenticate your tribe. I enjoin other concerned brethren both at home and in the Diaspora not to judge you harshly but pray to God whom you offended with impunity, to hasten a financial breakthrough that will discourage your big screen whorish aspiration. Your choice of career is an aberration to us, of eastern Nigeria.
I solicit for contributions from public spirited Nigerians and Africans. Afro Candy is in dire need of rehabilitation – mentally, medically, financially, spiritually and otherwise. A psychiatrist facility will do a lot for Ada anyi nwanyi. The woman who can perform unclad, naked on stage owes a psychotherapist a visit.
My dearest sister, conduct a thorough research and you will discover that blue film practitioners are never regarded, not even in Hollywood. I advise you to refrain from sexual motion pictures that will further saturate our cyber space with unwholesome content.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Uzor Ngoladi

Noble igbo what? Pls don't make me laugh,Nah,don't make me puke, mbanu, don't make me go into a fit. Abeg,Shooting a porn movie(at least everybody dey fuck)or using your friends, family,or even innocent people for rituals, which is worse? Have u spoken to some of your Otokoto brethren that are still moving about freely in their bog businesses? Have you done a memo to your kidnapping brothers who kidnap, collect ransome and still kill? Your Ndigbo leaders engaging in 3somes and 10somes with young girls, have u written to them? Noble indeed! The way you described the movie as raunchy sef gives me the impression, you have it saved somewhere and masturbate with it. Please leave Afro candy alone, she's doing you proud and should be celebrated, afterall she hasn't shed innocent blood.
All ye self righteous sanctimonious pretencious lot,on the judgement day,you will be shocked to find people like Afro candy seated in the heavenlies while you will be in the lake that burneth with Fire and brimstone,Yes,Baba God's ways are different from ours and his thots are different from ours. 5. The answer is simple, nearly all Nigerians in Ireland are jobless and the few that have jobs are cab drivers. All they do is collect welfare money or one benefit or the other from the government of Ireland and that is why their government is so broke and bankrupt. Stella need to visit Ireland and see how poor they are. Even the Irish people struggle to survive.

    1. Pls don't say what you are not sure of! I'm a nigerian and a registered nurse working in Rotunda hospital here in Ireland. Ireland cannot be classified as a poor country because even those on social welfare live better lives than the average Nigerian living on a monthly income of 100,000 naira.

  6. They dont understand that in africa we share what we have with family no matter the amount. Europeans dont have that obligation to their family and thats why its strange to them that we can part with so much of what we have. Meanwhilst if there are already checks and balances in place then whats the problem? Ppl shud leave nigerians now

  7. please Afrocandy is a disgrace! no normal thinking lady with morals and self respect will pursue such a "dream". Exhibiting such animalistic and whorelisic traits is not a good image for the average Nigerain woman.

Good memo Uzor Ngoladi.(pat on the back)

  8. Comment #5, the ones you know right? I know people in Ireland who work in IT, some with Nokia and other high end companies. There are levels. Also, "that is why their government is so broke and bankrupt?" For real? Perhaps a course in Economics 101 will enlighten you on servicing foreign debts, back taxes, economic policies etc. You just gave simplistic views which are incorrect.

  11. Pls do not take ds as a negative/positive critic on afrocandys'career choice. But I am trying to be objective. Have we ever considered the term Midlife crisis? It is a medical condition. And a lot of our young men and women are experiencing this condition too early in life as supposed to in their later years... So maybe we shld consider her mental state and perception and pray this phase in her life passes sooner...

  12. @Uzor: Afrocandy (Judith) is an adult. When she set out to do that genre of film, I'm sure she was not forced. Let her alone. Remember, there is a consequence for every action we take; good or bad. ~iPee
