Pastor Kumuyi Says Christmas Is Idolatrous?....For Real?

Whilst we are all going about preparing to celebrate christmas and what it
means ,a shocker has been dropped by a man of God..he warns his church
members to desist from celebrating the season for reasons underlined below

Kumuyi made the statement  on Saturday December 21,2013 at the
church’s annual national December convention at the church’s camp
 ground in Ogun state.

he says

“We don’t celebrate Christmas. It actually came from idolatrous background.
That is why you don’t hear us sing what they call Christmas carol, Never!
We always say it is the December retreat. We are only gathering together
because it is the holiday period and love the lord more, and rededicate
 ourselves more.

When you find anybody coming in, or any leader, trying to introduce
the idolatry of mystery Babylon, that they call Christmas and you want
to bring all the Christmas carol saying that is the day that Jesus was born,
and you don’t find that in the Acts of the Apostles or in the early church,
then you don’t find that in the church either. If you don’t know that before,
now you know.
We are not trying to make the church turn like the world. We want it to be
like Jesus Christ, and more like the Apostles. If you don’t have that mind
with us, then you have permission to go to other places.”

Monsignor Gabriel Osu, the Director of Social Communications,
Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos responded to the statement.

“I don’t know what he means by saying the practice of celebrating
Christmas is wrong. Is he saying that Christ wasn’t born? That he didn’t
come to die for us? Does he not celebrate his own birthday? Do Kumuyi’s
pastors not celebrate him? It is not everything I react to; some people just seek
attention. If Kumuyi is a Christian, then he must believe in Christ.
The celebration of Christmas didn’t just start today; it is too public an
event for anyone to say that they don’t know what it is about. If Kumuyi
is condemning the commercialisation of Christmas, I can understand that.
Christ came to redeem us from our lost state; this was actualised through
his coming, his birth; that is why we celebrate Christmas. It is the fulfilment
of God’s promise
I saw him on the television a few days ago. He was in Akwa Ibom State
and was the chief preacher during their Christmas celebration event.
Kumuyi is just saying what he feels; he is not making any doctrinal statement.”

*He prolly means that some people go under the guise of celebrating
 Christmas to commit various crimes.
what is your take on Christmas?please lets hear your take
irrespective of your religious belief.?

Pastor kumuyi has a winning arguement.I will still disregard it bearing in mind how jesus' first birthday saw wise men from the east bearing gifts.Let's not forget the star and the shepherds who got the announcement by angels in the fields.Tell me,what's not to celebrate? 6. I've always loved Kumuyi as a person despite the fact that I'm a muslim. He's a living example of a real man of God. He's never been involved in any scandal or shameless flaunting of wealth.

I however do not like the manner of his members' dressing, general outlook about life etc. I've heard Kumuyi codemn TV, well he later said he was misquoted. After his daughter in law's over-the-top appearance(for the church's standard), he has also said he never prescibed any form of dressing for church members. Its however glaring that his members dress in a particular way.

I understand where kumuyi is coming from. Christmas has been commercialised. I watched a Christmas carol on TV yesterday and some of the singers were practically naked. Charles Novia has also condemned the Christmas Cards of Maheeda who was naked, Juliet Ibrahim who was half naked etc.

Pastor Kumuyi should not throw the baby with the bath water though. He should encourage his members to take the positive lessons associated with Christmas and ignore the negative.

    1. http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/Christmas_TheRealStory.htm. He is actually not far from the truth the origin of xmas stems from Pagan worship, who merged with Christians to find a period to celebrate certain festivities. These pagans used Dec 25 to worship the sun god and also, in reality Jesus was born in the summer and not during the winter. We need to study the history of Christanity, to truly understand what we blindly follow.

    2. Just because some Christians knocked down amadiohas shrine and build a church there, will you call the church a shrine and refuse to worship God there?
I know that 25th December was originally a pegan holiday in a country ages ago...but now it is the day set out to celebrate the birth of our lord and saviour world wide.
If kumuyi decides to celebrate Christmas on the actual day Christ was born, that's his business but he should not condemn people that chose to celebrate Jesus in unity.
My pastor taught me that as long as people get the right message of Christmas and don't confuse him with santa then there's no cause for alarm.
My church even buy a stand during burnfire night...a pagan celebration...and win souls for Christ. Naija with our holier than thou attitude

  13. Most or all religious holidays are from pagan origins. I've read that Jesus Christ's birthday isn't in December. Some have said it's in October and others have said it's not known. The pagans used that day to worship saturn and when Christianity came, they adopted that day as his birthday.

"With no Biblical directive to do so and no mention in the Gospels of the correct date, it wasn't until the fourth century that church leaders in Rome embraced the holiday."

"While the birth year of Jesus is estimated among modern historians to have been between 7 and 2 BC, the exact month and day of his birth are unknown.[15][16] His birth is mentioned in two of the four canonical gospels. By the early-to-mid 4th century, the Western Christian Church had placed Christmas on December 25,[17] a date later adopted in the East,[18][19] although some churches celebrate on the December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which corresponds to January in the modern-day Gregorian calendar."

"Consider these quotes from the Catholic Encyclopedia, 1911 edition, under “Christmas”: “Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church…The first evidence of the feast is from Egypt.” Further, “Pagan customs centering round the January calenders gravitated to Christmas.” Under “Natal Day,” Origin, an early Catholic writer, admitted, “…In the Scriptures, no one is recorded to have kept a feast or held a great banquet on his birthday."

"“In the Roman world the Saturnalia (December 17) was a time of merrymaking and exchanging of gifts. December 25 was also regarded as the birth date of the Iranian mystery god Mithra, the Sun of Righteousness."

"A final quote about the selection of December 25th as the birth date of Christ is necessary. Note an article in The Toronto Star, December 1984, by Alan Edmonds, entitled, “We owe a lot to Druids, Dutch”: “The Reformation cast a blight on Christmas. By then, of course, clever ecclesiastical politicians had adopted the Pagan mid-winter festival as the alleged birth date of Jesus, of Nazareth, and thrown in a few other Pagan goodies to make their takeover more palatable.”

"December 25th was not selected because it was the birth of Christ or because it was even near it. It was selected because it coincided with the idolatrous pagan festival Saturnalia—and this celebration must be carefully examined. In any event, we do not know the exact date of Christ’s birth. While God certainly could have made it known, He chose to hide it from the world’s eyes!"

There's just so much info on this. You can believe what you want to believe. I just feel to respect other people's sensibilities, Kumuyi shouldn't have said anything. The same way Okotie shouldn't have said all Catholics will go to hell. Leave people to discover these things and believe what they want to.

At this generation and age and time, 25th December is the day set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ.

In celebrating Christmas please let's remember who it's really about...Jesus! The precious gift to is from God. Satan is trying to distract true Christians and we must not be carried away! One love!

  25. Well, you can disagree with him but the fact it, no one can prove that there is any concept or idea Christmas in the Bible. Secondly, no one can prove that Christ was born on the 25th of December. Besides, the conventional calendar (which is known as the gregorian calendar) is only something that came later. Apart from that, the names of the months have origins in Greek gods and goddess. We should do more study on this rather than attack the man for his view. It is just as clear enough to understand.

    ReplyDelete
  26. DeMyk says: People just interpret what suits them and education is not just going to school but thinking out of the box. Yes December 25th may not be Christ BD as there is no sufficient proof to that. And yes, historically, 25/12 was a public holiday for the secular world before Christianity but the early converts needed a day to celebrate this one man who brought light into the world hence they chose a day when people are already on holiday, in their homes, parks etc- This is to enable them reach out to as many people as possible- What is wrong with that? Didnt the bible tell us that we were created in the image and likeness of God? so as God can create, we can pro-create? think, imagine and make things happen? without being like God, how can man imagine say build an aeroplane? The same bible tells us that "Where 2 or 3 of you are gathered, I am there" What ever 2 or 3 of you agree in my name has been agreed in heaven" so what is wrong if the early converts agreed to use 25/12 to celebrate their Lord? Why do deeper life christains go to church on Sundays? Sunday is the first day of the week that God worked and rested on the sabbath day- Saturday but the secular world decided to rest on Sunday and Christians also decided to fix their major worship day for Sunday that people dont work so Kumuyi can fit to make his own church day on Monday and request his members to open shop on Sundays. the mother and child symbol of catholicism originated from isis and osiris (mother and daughter)

Easter or ishtar-eostre as its known in pagan practise innana..

having said all that we christians celebrate the symbol and the ideals as it relates to our faith and not the birth itself..rather than laying emphasis on when jesus was born we should focus on being selfless and giving to the less privilege.

we should focus on what is important like family friends and loved ones and appreciating them that is what God would have wanted and not an unnecessary focus on mundane symbolism

He was a man who everyday of his life showed compassion to the poor, sick and needy, A man who lived a sinless life, a man who took the fall so we could live!
As Christians, every day is christmas! Everyday we must love and compassion to the poor and needy!
How dare u wait till the 25th of december b4 u could give food out to the poor! Have u not been eating anything since jan 1st? But the only day u could share ur food with the poor and u say you're celebrating the birth of christ?

Nobody knows when He was born, what is wrong in us agreeing on a date for uniformity. This people are only being petty. I only advise that there should be moderation and sober reflection on the day. As we celebrate we should ponder on the significance of His coming and appraise how we live our lives vis-a-viz His teachings. Peace

  47. Lucabracee; you forgot to mention Nimrod. Osiris was a male god by the way.

Oluwadamilola; did you not learn the meaning of and how to use quotation marks in English classes? Rhetorical question. FYI they are from e-books.

  49. Dec 25th was a day set aside 2 celebrate d god of sun. Y then shld d celebration of the birth of christ coincide with it. We were all born into d world 2 be told dat decemba 25 is christmas no 1 bothered 2 search d origin. Firstly, dat day has been knwn for idol worshipers so it has been corrupted, the lions nature has been corrupted nd it cnt be associated with good bcos of its past. D date was chosen by people we dnt knw. We cnt tell if d ppl who chose d date were worshipers. Besides its nt commanded in d bible 2 celebrate it nd d bible is d christian's map. (it was only herodias dat celebrated birthday). Y is my chicken so happy 2day. Ahah. Dnt think 2 much. Chicken must to die.

the fact that these dates have pagan origins doesn't mean the religion is being followed blindly..festivities of these sort evolve in direct correlation with the time and society.

many 100s of years from now if Jesus tarries the gay and lesbian day, pancake day breast appreciating day and all that might turn out to be celebrated like xmas it is what we indulge in on the day that matters not if jesus was really born on that day

  52. Please do not take this comment as a joke. Christmas was the day nimrod was born. Please please and please Jesus Christ was not born on Dec25. Nimrod the god of the sun was born on Dec25 and he in turn was called the messiah in his first rule that is he was the first world ruler after the first destruction of the world. If you check your Bible it says the a ntichrist who was the first will be the last. That is nimrod who was the first world leader will be the last world leader which is the a ntichrist and if you Google it the body of a man known to be nimrod has already been found. Now how he is going to come back to life I don't know but I believe there are a lot of things in this world we the common public do not know of. Please this is not fairytale or fallacy or just the rantings of a mad woman. I have made thorough research through YouTube and these revelations given onto those people who make the videos are backed up by the Bible. Please do not believe that just because its what you have grown up to believe in and its what has been here for a long time that it makes it right in any form. Do not be afraid to be open minded and research this please I beg. When they say the world is coming to an end its not just a saying it is actually true the world is coming to an end and soon all these things will be revealed.

  57. Stella, I sent u this in a mail but you refused to publish. So I'm hoping you will post it here. Thanks. Please I need advice from blog visitors..

    Hi Stella.
    Hope you are okay?
I know this mail is really long but please take time to read it. I beg you.

Ermm.... I don't know if you can feature this on your blog, but I'd be glad if you do.

U see, my parents are pastors and have this fellow couple who are pastors, as friends and we are all family friends. My mum knew her friend in secondary school and my dad knew the husband in church, cos they were courting friends. And both couples got married and had kids. 5 kids each. So the two families are so tightly knit that each child has friend in the other family. And we all grew up like that. God be praised. We went to the same schools, some of us did similar courses in university and all that. Our parents pray together, do biz together, run their various ministries well. And it does seem ok.

However, my friend in the other house is a guy and he has picked a certain interest in me lately. He's quite a shy guy, good looking, brilliant and has a career that's growing rapidly. He's also God-fearing, well behaved (i mean, we are all well brought up). He told me he would want us to get married and he only needs approval from me to go ahead with announcements to family. That he is sure he wants to do this.

Now I see him as a brother (i mean we were in the same class all through secondary school) he's my very good friend. We are both the 4th kids of both families :) and have always been friends. But, the family has certain doctrines they practice. My family is a very Christian family. Yet, we wear trousers fix extensions, wear makeup. My dad likes to look good so he imbibed it in us. We also celebrate Christmas, New year, Easter, Valentines day. Just a regular family.
But, my fiancé to be is from a family where trousers are a huge NO, extensions are out of it (braids or weavons), Christmas isn't celebrated neither is Easter. Only new year and independence day. Because (i quote): The birth and death of Jesus never had a documented date, so we don't have to mark it when the world uses it as an excuse to commit sin. They don't also go to conventional church, they do cell meetings on Sundays and other selected week days. Pray, share d word and leave (like the way the disciples did on the day of Pentecost). Maybe because the church has been polluted with alot of things (which i wont rule out completely).

My problem now is, i love extensions. I am petite and a fashion lover, makeup professional and all. I have a pretty face and nice body but im not so blessed with hit legs. So i love leggings, pants, jeans. I feel more confident in those than skirts. When i wear skirts they are always long and to church. I love fashion/beauty and wanna go into it full time. I love Christmas, you know. Carols and Xmas church events, i love to organise them.  I love Easter. It really reminds me of the love Jesus had for me when he gave his life. And is usually an emotional time for me. I take my fasting during this period very seriously.

I'm in my mid twenties, and this is how i have lived my life. If i get married to this guy i have to give all this up. Future Career, my love for church Christmas events, my trousers i love, my extensions -lol, my future career in d beauty industry which i sleep and dream about everyday. My kids wont experience Christmas or Easter or get special presents for these.

  58. Continued:

I tried to talk to him about it, he said a woman coming into his family will have to submit to their ways of doing things. And his parents lead a congregation of people. So any lack of compliance from the General Overseers house can do alot of damage to the ministry. That his sisters were doing it while they were single, before each of them got married. And its quite the logical thing to do, since i am the wife coming in.

I really like him and cherish the friendship but these things are a hard pill to swallow. I have prayed and i still seem confused. And i have to be really careful because of the family relationships.

Does anyone out there have a similar experience? Is there anyone who has been in this situation and how did he/she handle it? I am not sure of my happiness if i have to change all of me, while accepting to get married to him. That would be someone else's kind of life i am living, not mine. And i am sure one day, i will crack. This might be a problem ooh! A few people have told me God's grace is sufficient to see me through. But..... I don't even know anymore.

I would really appreciate advice from you and your readers, Stella. Please and please. I am counting on this. Please don't let me down.
Thank you and God bless you.

  59. MY RESPOND TO KUMIYI'S STATEMENT AGAINST THE CELEBRATION OF XMAS BY CHRISTIANS,
I wish to State categorically that we are living in Paganistic world where everything is associated with satanic activity due to human depravity. It is on record however that the church was born as a microcosm in a macrocosmic society whose traditions were depraved. However, Christmas Origin though had a paganistic antecedent with the mind to venerate Satan but with the entrance of light, the world was illuminated,a change took place. People were made to understand that Jesus Christ was the light and still the light of the world, Therefore, the celebration of Christmas to my mind is to commemorate the gift of God to mankind. We are celebrating the birth of our Saviour who was born unto us according to our scriptures. Let us not be Hypocritical like the Pharisees and Sadducee. Those who condemn the celebration of Christmas celebrate their birthdays and other event. My question to them is "Are Those Event Scriptural?", if they are, they should quote the chapter and verse.
Kumiyi goes to church on Sunday and his worshipers, was Sunday not idolatrous?
From Monday-Saturday, are those days not idolatrous?
From Jan-Dec, are those days not idolatrous?
and the market days in their own area, do they not have paganistic origin
Though I don't blame him, he is a man of God, but he lacks a SOUND THEOLOGICAL AND BIBLICAL DOCTRINE. Christmas should be celebrated, and honor our Lordship Jesus Christ and not the way the world celebrate it...... the wise-men and the shepherds honour Jesus Christ. What is wrong for Christians to set aside a day to honor Christ., John 3:16. but Remember that Christ was not born on 25th DEc but was born one day. Hwose date was not known?
My advice is that Believers should not follow the world to do it in their ways, everything should be done in a moderate way and to the glory of God
    happy Xmas......

  63. If this report is true, Na wa.
Herein lies the danger in some episcopal interpretations of scripture and history that may be turned into doctrines and dogma that faithfuls abide by :- sometimes with serious, combustible consequences.

Although the history of Christmas celebrations can be linked to the holiday of Saturnalia which was celebrated by Roman pagans (between Dec. 17 and 25) with a lot of what may be described as paganistic debauchery, I do not think the modern Christian celebration should be brushed off as representing paganism because the content of the modern Christian's celebration is devoid of the excesses of the past.

It may even be argued that the early Christians (4th Century), chose to celebrate Christmas at this time as a way to attract the pagans. As I am not an expert in this subject, I will just leave this suggestion as a thought which may of course be wrong.

Having said this, true Christians celebrate renewed hope in the eventual enthronement of good over evil, peace and goodwill amongst men and redemption at Xmas. As long as this remains the focus of celebration, I believe that what you call the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord and saviour and when we celebrate does not matter.

  64. Pastor Kumuyi is perfectly right. Google out the background of Christmas and you will agree with him. Besides, nothing so mentioned in the Bible. Old habits die hard, so the world will almost kill Paster Kumuyi for his comments.
