A housewife, Uzoima Patrick has been charged along with her husband, Ezechima over the rape, by the husband of their 16 year old house keeper. 

The couple was arraigned today before the Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Ezechima, 42 and Uzoima, 37, who reside at 14 Iyajesha Street, Amikonle in Alagbado, a Lagos suburb, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, child defilement and rape. The prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences between June 1 and June 4 at their residence. He alleged that the husband conspired with his wife to rape the teenage housekeeper. “Patrick conspired with his wife to defile the 16-year-old girl. Uzoima had overpowered the girl for the husband to rape her.’’ Uzoima threatened to stab the girl with a knife to force her to cooperate with her husband, the prosecutor said. He said the offences contravened Sections 137, 258 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 258 stipulates life imprisonment for rape. The couple has denied the charge. In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum. Further hearing in the case was fixed for 22 September.

 The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday said that Vice President, Namadi Sambo will be the running mate of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections. The party was debunking reports in the media that Sambo may not be picked by Jonathan as his running mate. In a statement signed by Olisah Metuh, the party disclosed that the Vice President was part of the Jonathan’s presidential ticket endorsed as the party’s sole candidate in the 2015 presidential election, hence his running mate.

There are conflicting reports over the purported killing of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau. While some reports said the man killed by either the Nigerian Army or Cameroonian Army was an impostor of the real Shekau who was killed in 2013, other reports say the real Shekau has just been killed. The military on the other hand is yet to confirm whether the sect leader it killed in Konduga was the real Boko Haram leader.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, has said that the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan as PDP sole candidate for 2015 Presidential election was higly undemocratic. Kwankwaso stated this while receiving the report of a consultation committee on his Presidential ambition, affirming that the decamp of the five Governors to the APC had rendered PDP powerless.
The highest Muslims body in the North, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, on Monday in Kaduna accused the Federal government of covering up the illegal arm deal of $9.3m purportedly conveyed by Oritsejafor’s jet. The body has asked the nation’s anti-graft body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, to probe into the matter as soon as possible.

The World Health Organisation on Monday confirmed that the Ebola Virus Disease had been timely contained in Nigeria and Senegal. The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by the organisation’s regional office for Africa. He said there had been no new confirmed cases in the two countries since the first and last cases were confirmed in both countries.

Report says public schools in Lagos State and in many other states across the country refused to resume for the 2014/2015 academic session on Monday as directed by the Federal Government. Schools in Oyo, Ogun, Rivers, Kano, Kwara, Zamfara, Niger, Osun and few others remained closed as teachers and pupils were not sighted anywhere around the premises.

Police Command in Akwa Ibom state said it had detonated two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) found in the male hostel of University of Uyo (UNIUYO). The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Etim Dickson, while confirming the report in Uyo, the state capital told newsmen that the explosives were home-made. He said investigation was on to unravel the source of the explosives.

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports at some quarters that Cameroonian soldiers were responsible for the alleged killing of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau. The Army, while dismissing the report said in a tweet from the handle of Defence Headquarters that there was no raid whatsoever by Cameroon or any foreign forces in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed.

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi has said that there was currently no space for both Obafemi Martins and Kelechi Iheanacho in the ongoing Nations cup qualification effort. While he said younger players were currently playing Obafemi’s position and needed to be given more chance to play, he said Kelechi was yet to gather the needed experience to play for the Super Eagles.

Tragedy struck in Ogun State on Monday when a 60-year-old retired police officer identified as Sunday Isokpehi killed himself and his 40-year-old wife, Gladys.

The Ogun State Police Command said it was currently investigating the circumstance that led to that ugly incident.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, while confirming the incident to newsmen said the Command would investigate whether or not the late Police officer legally acquired the double-barrelled gun he used in committing the crime.

It was gathered that problem erupted when Isokpehi returned home on Saturday and saw her wife drunk.

The source said an argument ensued in the process and the retired officer picked his gun and shot at the wife who died on the spot and killed himself too.

He said: “We are still investigating the immediate and remote causes of the tragic incident. We will find out whether the man was depressed or was under any influence, because a normal human being will not open fire on his wife and then kill himself.

Lagos State resident doctors have petitioned the State House of Assembly, seeking its prompt intervention over alleged refusal of the state government to pay their August salary.

The body in a letter through the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, called on the lawmakers to facilitate the payment of their salary.

The letter, which was read on the floor of the House by the Clerk, Ganiyu Abiru, urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to pay the doctors’ salary to avoid strike.

Recall that NMA had embarked on a nationwide industrial action, which lasted for about two months before it was finally suspended in August.

The doctors wondered why government would refuse to pay their entitlement.
