UK Deports 5 Year Old Nigerian Boy To Nigeria Despite High Profile Campaign To Keep Him In The UK

Rafeeq Atanda A five-year-old schoolboy has been deported to a country he has never lived in despite a high profile campaign to prevent the move. Rafeeq Atanda was deported to Nigeriaon Friday night along with his mum Bola Fatumbi.

It happened despite an 11th hour appeal from Gateshead MP Ian Mearns and calls for him to remain in the country from campaigners.

Just hours before he was flown to the African country, Mr Mearns had asked the Home Office to review a decision to deport the youngster after more than 8,000 people put their name to a petition demanding he be allowed to stay. Despite being born in this country, Rafeeq, of Gateshead, has spent the past week in a London immigration centre with his mum, before his removal from the country, the Evening Chronicle reported.

I really do think that this child’s position warrants that the whole case be reviewed. “Please ask the Minister to think about the rights of this child in considering his mother’s case.”

The Home Office has said that Mrs Fatumbi was first told in 2007 that she had no right to be in the UK, while later that year she was jailed for nine months for possession of a false document, which she used to illegally obtain employment in the UK.

But the Bensham community say Rafeeq, who has some learning difficulties, now faces life in a country he has never known, thousands of miles away from his friends. Joanne Allen, head teacher at Brighton Avenue Primary School, where Rafeeq was a Year 1 pupil, said: “The staff here have been very upset all week and the children have been asking where Rafeeq is. “He, of course, would have been welcomed back to our school with open arms.”

On Friday afternoon, Mr Mearns was notified that a review had been carried out following a request by the MP, but that Mrs Fatumbi’s deportation would go ahead as planned. Mr Mearns responded with an email stating: “I really do not think that the Home Office has given any weight to the welfare of Mrs Fatumbi’s son. “I cannot for the life of me think what a five-year-old boy, who has never set foot outside this country, has done to warrant his deportation to a country, Nigeria, that he knows nothing about and certainly never set foot in.

Supporters were last night asking the airline, due to carry Rafeeq and his mother back to Nigeria, to reconsider on humanitarian grounds.

A Home Office spokesman said: “Bola Fatumbi was first told in 2007 that she had no right to be in the UK. Later that year she was jailed for nine months for possession of a false document, which she used to illegally obtain employment in the UK. “She subsequently applied for asylum. This claim was refused, the decision backed up by an independent judge who found her claims not to be credible. “Every claim is carefully considered and where there is a genuine need of protection asylum will be granted. “We provide help and support to those found not to have the right to remain in the UK in returning to their own country. If they refuse to engage with this process we will enforce removal.”

since 2007?
They told her to leave and she quickly got pregnant and thought having a child there would change it all. This is a lesson for all those who tow her path.I know Nigeria doesnt make things easy but being deported is worse!

    7. Please stella don't judge her, its annoying. You dont know what her case is or what she has been through. The only mistake she made was not getting pregnant for someone with papers cos if she had, she can't be deported (u can't deport a British citizen) even if his mum doesn't have papers, so she was just unlucky... I have met so many women in thid country with the same situation and they go through hell. I wish i knew her, i would have done my bit to help her..#my opinion #

    10. @Cakes, Evies is right. British citizen is automatic for someone that at least one of the parents is a British. They wouldn't have been able to deport both of them. Sometimes people don't know the law b4 taking actions. Giving birth to a child with someone without papers is as bad as wasting of time

Bottom line, they've been deported, painful I know, as that wasn't their plan but life goes on.

  27. Sad for the boy,but I don't feel sorry for the mum,she was told before she had the boy she had no right to stay, but she went ahead to get pregnanat beleiving she would get her papers maybe when the boy is 7.it dosent work that way anymore, immigration laws are getting difficult by the day.Not trying to sound harsh but I really wonder how people live here without papers and have kids.I would say it again and again,do your findings well before you decide to relocate atleast get the proper visa not 6months tourist and when it expires you find yourself in a mess, its not worth it.British people no dey laugh this days, they are just picking people up any how.

  41. Immigration laws are getting strict by the day. I feel for the young lad who has spent an important part of his childhood in a society/environment that is quite different from his home country. So sad that Nigeria has remained in its present condition and can't imagine the terrible image the Home office would have of Nigeria after reviewing the numerous claims made by Asylum seekers....May God help our nation.

  42. Those living in d US illegally...una turn go soon reach once republicans takes over the seat.. Oh how they despise illegal immigrants.. Nov 2016 changing and touching the immigration law will be their #1 priority... the boy will adapt. he's only 5 for crying out loud!

  43. They keep saying "boy five deported" but it is not actually the boy who is being deported.it is the mother.and to think that they always lie and say bad things about Nigeria just so they won't be deported.

  47. I feel only for the pikin! People that advised the mum really misled her! Even though she wanted a child at least she shoulda done it with a citizen! Thereby securing her and the boy's future in the UK! I see lots of our naija sisters in Berlin, cologne and Frankfurt who say they don't want anything to do with Oyibo's to avoid being 'Tagged an ashawo'... hence they mingle with the street gigolo/cassanova African men who still convince them at the end to give into prostitution!! They house those men and still pay their bills I come dey ask say 'wetin dey wrong with some ladies brains? If the boy had a strong British background he wouldn't have been deported! And, since he is under aged they can't call him back because no one is there to care for him (unless they will put him up in a home).
