Etcetera Writes: The Igbos Are The Wandering Jews Of West Africa

Writing on the marginalisation of the Igbos, Etcetera goes down history lane and asks a very pertinent question amongst several others, 'Why alter demography just to make the Igbos a minority in a region where they were the majority?'

"The Igbos are the wandering Jews of West Africa… gifted, aggressive, Westernised; at best envied and resented, but mostly despised by the mass of their neighbors in the federation – Henry Kessinger (famous American diplomat)

Back in the days, men made fortune out of war, war was business. But today, the Igbos are making fortune out of business, because business is the new war.

Before we talk about the plight of the Igbos in Nigeria, let us start by defining a word that has been frequently used by the Igbos to define their situation in the country, marginalisation!

According to a good number of dictionaries, to “marginalise” means “to treat someone or something as if they are unimportant.”
It also means “to take or keep somebody away from the centre of action.” Another dictionary defined it as “relegating someone or a group of people to a lower or outer edge of a community or society.” For so long, the Igbos have bitterly cried out against apparent marginalisation by the Federal Goverment of Nigeria.

There is almost a zero federal presence in the east, despite the fact that the eastern region is the most technologically advanced of all the regions. This suggests unequivocally that the Igbo-speaking Nigerians have been unjustly treated. There is a well calculated ploy by the powers that be from other ethnic nationalities to ensure that the Igbo region stays perennially underdeveloped.
What the Igbos are going through can be traced to none other than Yakubu Gowon. Gowon should explain why a people who were by far the dominant majority ethnic group were suddenly relegated to only one out of the three states created by him in the old Eastern region. Why alter demography just to make the Igbos a minority in a region where they were the majority? Since then, the Igbos haven’t been able to get this injustice reversed and till date, they have seen more states and local governments created in other regions across the country.

Nigerian historians are unanimous that the 1963 census remains the most transparent in the country till date. The 1963 census stated that one out of every four Nigerians was an Igbo, which means that if things were done equitably in this country, the Igbos should have a 25 per cent representation in all federal institutions as well as a 25 per cent share of all states and local governments created since independence.

We must tell ourselves the truth and stop living in denial. Nigeria as it stands today is sitting on a keg of gun powder and if we must stay together as a country, we have to sit down and discuss the terms and conditions of our coexistence. No section of the country should be treated better than others. I have heard some northerners mutter several times that power belongs to them. “Born to rule,” the old Sokoto State slogan is a clear confirmation of what has been psyched into the system of every northerner.

And they keep saying “One Nigeria?” Isn’t it obvious that the northerners are more Nigerians than other Nigerians? That’s why they could openly threaten the nation with violence like they did in the just concluded presidential election. It was peddled about that if Buhari had lost the election, there would have been trouble in the country and as a result, a lot of people voted against their wishes especially in the north. So many issues need to be addressed in this country. For example, how do you explain why Arabic is on the naira when the official language of the country is English? How do you explain why an Hausa man is allowed to carry daggers freely when others get arrested for carrying a razor blade?

Please, can someone explain to me who the real Hausas are? I have travelled to virtually all the northern states and in most of the states, the people I met claimed not to be Hausas but from other tribes. According to them, that they spoke fluent Hausa doesn’t mean they are Hausas. Nancy who’s from Kaduna always makes it known to whoever cares to listen that she’s not Hausa but Zango Kataf. My guitarist who’s from Nasarawa State grumbles whenever I call him an Hausa man. Amina, my Fulani neighbour screams and curses whenever I call her an Hausa lady. So who then are the real Hausas?

What states are they occupying? Stop using politics to bamboozle me that Hausa is a majority. Stop using politics to lump Hausa and Fulani together because you want me to think you are highly populated.

In the just concluded presidential election, Katsina State had over two million eligible voters, I have been to Katsina several times and I can’t remember ever seeing so many people there. How did they come about the figures in the presidential election? May God save this country from desperate politicians because it doesn’t make any sense politicising the population of the North when we see otherwise each time we travel there.

It is in the same light they claimed Kano was more populated than Lagos in the census conducted during Obasanjo’s regime. We are tired of these lies. If we must remain an indivisible country, the true population of the Hausas, Igbos and Yorubas and every other ethnic group in this country must be made public as well as the number of Christians and Muslims. Enough of the Hausa-Fulani scam or the Zango Kataf man being counted as Hausa.

Finally, the fact that other ethnic groups see the marginalisation of the Igbos as relative or just a perception and not based on the objective realities on ground is a shame. The Nigerian army today cannot produce a bullet but the boys in Awka are producing not only bullets but guns. An unbiased Federal Government would have taken advantage of that and create employment as well as exporting to generate money for the country.

With a little government encouragement, Aba can easily rival the industralised nations of the world in production. If Ndigbo won’t be allowed to enjoy the freedom, to develop and maximise their collective and individual potential through unfettered access, use and exploitation of God-given resources – human and material, the country might soon be plunged into another years of Biafra vs Nigeria and this time around, there will be a victor and a vanquished."

Everyone trying to gain popularity by replying the Oba..Abeg enough already!
Enough!! Enough!! Enough!!!
What do you stand to gain by revisitng this issue over and over again?

Afterall the igbos who were present when the Oba made that speech laughed..call them out for laughing and leave this thing alone...Create a meme from it and move on!
This is my two cents please.
Those planning to argue should not come in here to use dirty Language!!....

    1. Heavy sigh. The Oba is not a politician and he's known to talk carelessly sometimes. I'll still say it, why didn't the ibos in there keep quiet to show their displeasure instead of clapping and cheering? Im ibo but most times we are 2 faced. Ibos always forming superior, newsflash, we are NOT in anyway. Get off your high horses and vote who you want to vote, obas speech or no obas speech. You were going to vote for someone before he said that. Oba most certainly doesn't control lagos, the governor does.

    6. *clears throat*

My own is I don't support anyone who says that Lagos is a no-man's land. The dominating tribe is still the Yorubas, the lang is Yoruba and Lagos is in the SW. So Lagos belongs to the Yorubas. I really don't know what led to the no-man's land statement, but clearly Lagos is a SW state. #SpeakTheTruth.

For those that say Igbos should go back to their states to develop them, I take this to be a proud talk! Everyone is allowed to move freely and reside anywhere in this country, the reason why we preach #OneNigeria. (or is it now a divided country). Apart from Lagos, which other SW state has a high population of non-indigenes? Yet many of you making mouth are from the remaining 5 SW states wch is not as dev as Lagos, why are you not living in your own state? Shebi it's same SW. Why are you in Lagos? That thing that made you leave your SW state for Lagos is the same reason non-indigenes and Igbos are trooping to Lagos.

Now for real Lagos indigenes, that ppl re trooping in means that thay can see something good in ur state. Remember Lagos was formerly d capital, this was an added advantage, ok? Many resources from other States were pulled in to dev Lagos. I will also commend the LAGS for their continuous work in seeing that Lagos keeps moving forward. Again, if you still think that the Igbos in ur state should go back to their States and dev dem, are the other Lagosians living in the East, FCT, P/H, North etc willing to move back to Lagos? Let's be careful what we wish for. There are still some Yorubas in other regions.

There are many Lagosians in the diaspora living well, so why do you wish for non-indigenes to leave ur state? If Europe, America and other continents can tolerate Nigerians, you should do same. Afterall we are from the same country. If you think the non-indigenes in Lagos are obstacles to devt, there is always a RIGHT way to do things! Other than using threats. Let's live in peace, many of our friends/relatives are married to different tribes.

NO TRIBE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER! Are you God to say who is better? We have the good and the bad in every tribe and nationality. Let's work together for progress, peace and unity.

    4. Peace has not been restored Sisi..
Until a lot of things are corrected, looked into...this Peace might just be lip service..

Did you notice how "tribalistic" the blog turned into for sometime now? People directly and indirectly aired their views, wrote their minds about each others tribe..I was shocked!!

I was not raised like that, because my Dad even though he fought the Biafran war is not a man of hate.
So imagine my shock when I left the east and realised that different tribes had derogatory words coined for each other. And got more shocker few days ago with the likes of bv Eniola Adegbite and her horrible comments!!!

There is fire on the mountain.. Not overflogging It will not make it disappear..not talking about it,wont make things any better.
Refusing to write about it will not make the wind blow it away!!!

It is here with us,on this blog,in our work places, even on the streets... the common mallam that welds his dagger.. we are scared of upsetting their cows on the road,so we park for them to stroll pass elegantly...

Most people travelled home, because they were scared that the upset Fulani youths will be "angry" if the election does not swing their way!!

Am I a free man in my own country?
Am I really free to vote who I want and jubilate outside proudly without been stabbed to death?

What if another Northerner decides to run in 2019 and their brothers also say we won't have peace if they lose? Do we vote them because they are good or because we are scared??
We are just lucky today because hopefully Buhari has a lot to offer, what if an Efulefu decides to run in 2019 with all the support from the North? Can we vote against him, with underage voting, muslims from other neighbouring countries smuggled in to vote and a threat of no peace for our brothers in their state?
      Ponder on this.

    1. Point of correction, Lagos is not a 'No Man's Land".

Lagos have true indigenes, they have their culture and they have their Oba. Everybody living in Lagos needs to appreciate this fact.

Until Nigeria Govt passes a law eradicating State of Origin rule in Nigeria we all need to respect the culture and tradition of our host communities.

And for those waiting for the Oba to apologize, forget it! That can never happen. Oro Oba ase ni. Oba nba lori oun gbogbo. The word of the king is decree. A king is lord over all his subjects and all they own.

      This is our culture.

During any crisis you igbos will run to your states, then you open your smelling pussy mouth to say Lagos is no man's land? Do igbos sell land to other indigenes to build? Do igbos encourage business competitors from other tribes to sell on your land? Nansense!

    3. Anon 13:06 ....u said it all.

Who says Lagos is no man's land? What about the people from Isale eko, Ikorodu and some other places in Lagos? They have their languages and culture.

Even yorubas who were born and have been living in Lagos for ages dare not say Lagos is no man's land.......because at d end of d day, when asked about our state of origin, we still confirm that we are from other states.

Yorubas are the most accommodating tribe, that's the truth. The same Agbaje Igbos are clammouring for was d genesis of the Obas statement when he said 'if he becomes the governor of Lagos.....he will elevate d Eze Ndigbo in Lagos to d level of the Oba of Lagos'........who says this kinda trash all in d name of politics and seeking for votes yet expects the Oba to wave his 'irukere' at him or those who expects to be raised to his level? Can a yoruba man in d east(no matter how many years he has spent there) be elevated by d igbos to d level of their king? Lets be truthful abeg. I am not saying the Obas comment is nice but who will keep quiet to such and not speak out of anger?

It is here in lagos you people have Eze Ndigo, i lived some years in Abia and Anambra states together and i never heard yorubas having a baale there. It is still here we have some Igbos holding key positions in the state and so many of them in d civil service which can never happen in the east lailai.

For those still expecting apology from the Oba, u have to wait till Jesus comes. That can not happen. That is yoruba culture and you must respect it as long as you are in the yoruba land just like you will expect yorubas to do same with ur traditions and culture in ur land!

The northerns have this ideology that Nigeria belongs to them and they must rule, unfortunately we southerners are not united at all we claim we are "educated and wise'' and we allow the most uneducated and poorest region to govern us. The northerners are fighting for power but they wont use d power to educate or improve their people because they need them to be their stooges that can be manipulated for their selfish gain. They come to the south to do menial jobs but ran back to the north to vote and defend their brother, I pity the southerners especially the igbos.

  24. I believe whether Zango Kataf or Burukutu or whatever, so long you stay in the North and you use the word 'Shegeya' whenEver you are exchanging words with someone else, you are a NORTHERNER.
When an Ijebu person speaks, if you are not Ijebu, forget about understanding it. Should we say they are not Yorubas because majority of us don't understand it? Plus Ondo and Ekiti?
When Aworis, the original inhabitants of Lagos speak, you can't hear a thing. They won't tell you they are not Yorubas.
I think the Northerners are just trying to disassociate themselves from the word Hausa which is synonymous to BokoHaram.
Some Deltans have a pint of Yoruba in their language.Omosede, Omawumi etc. sounds Yoruba too.
Not to talk of Edo people. Omoruyi etc. Should we tag them Igbos because their regions are closer to each other?
This is a very complicated and sensitive issue and I think the Oba's statement have been overflogged. Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb that can explode any minute from now if we don't watch our utterances.
I pray a repeat of the civil war does not take place. No more SDK, no more amebos, no more comments that'd make you laugh and forget your sorrows, no more giveaways.

  27. Ever Wondered Why the Buhari/APC Transition Team is yet to be constituted?

I ll tell you the MAJOR reason why now. It is all centred around one man's obnoxious demands. I can tell you as an insider. As part of the merger agreements, the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria was to provide the VP slot. That agreement was honoured by GMB, even when it almost resulted in a Muslim/Muslim ticket.

I was a member of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change before the merger, GMB and Prince Tony Momoh are still my political leaders. I am a hardcore Buharist and believe strongly in the spartan ideals he stands for. GMB as President elect submitted the list of his transition committee to the party leadership before the Easter holiday with some notable names which we all crave to see at the centre. One notable names GMB put in that list which Ashiwaju rejected were Babatunde Fashola and Olasupo Shasore. The reasons for his decision were parochial. As usual in his selfish trademark, anyone who has disagreed with him politically is to be punished. Do you all remember that he almost deprieved Fashola a 2nd term in office in 2011 simply because he didnt kow-tow to his megalomania. This same man betrayed us in the CPC in 2011 because of his selfish interests and got ACN agents to openly canvass for Jonathan in the General election. Only Aregbesola revolted against that compromise.

Let us not be in a hurry to forget these his antecedents.

In the next few weeks, Asiwaju will be in for the biggest political shock of his life. After getting the VP slot, he now wants more. He wants to nominate Wale Edun to man the Finance Ministry, Mofe Boyo of Oando as Petroleum Minister/NNPC GMD. He has also asked to be given the Works Ministry slot.

Enough is enough. We must stop the greed of one man and put national interest first in all that we do.

We should deal with this tribalism and tribalistic hate comments very squarely.
It's never enough until the trust hit the hardcore. Just like Chimamanda, i think it's also rude to wrong somebody and still tell when to move on. Lets us ask ourselves, have really moved from being tribalistic and tribalism? Have we moved on from Conquers and the conqueror mentality? Until we move on from these, there is no 'really moving on'.
If this we don't deal with this, another lousy person may come up with worst statement tomorrow which can cause genocide(Remember the crocoach name calling and the Rwanda genocide).
We need to do a deep examination of our conscience.
Let me ask a question? Can the Igwe make that statement about any majority tribe in this country?
What will be the outcome and reactions?

  30. Etcetera, a common language binds people together. If Kanuri and Fulani speak Hausa, then that binds them together and gives them a common identity. The English man you know of today is the melding of Angles, Saxons, Normans and Vikings. If not for the interference of the British in Nigeria, maybe the Katafs and co will be more Hausa than they are today due to common language and cultural mixing. Also, maybe the Ikwerres will be more Igbo and the Isokos and Urhobos one tribe. Nwannem, I think we as Nigerians should be looking at what brings us together instead of what separates, and if it is language, then so be it.

Also, I'm Igbo but I fault your statement that Igbos are the most technologically advanced in Nigeria. Such insinuations only lead to others pouring scorn on us. What yardstick did you use to measure this?

Finally my brother, in a multi ethnic country like Nigeria, nobody will come and put development at your doorstep. You have to scheme and plan for it! Igbos are lousy at pretending and always feel that they have to say things as they are. We have to learn how to laugh and "pretend" to be humble with other people, while secretly working for our self interest. It doesn't matter how we see ourselves, it is how other people see us that matters. There is no shame in leading people on, pretending, being two faced etc. That is the world we live in. Human beings like to feel seduced, like to see that someone is making an effort to make them feel good, and igbos are hopeless at that. Remember as a youth, it is the guy who flatters and flirts shamelessly with the girls, and who made the girls feel good, that ended up between their legs.

  31. Etcetra argument is watery, tones depict tribalism tone and base less! Who is maginalizing who? How does Northerners issue relevant in Oba of Lagos speech? Who told him Yorubas are not making their own guns and bullets? Some of my Igbo friends have over blotted ego of themselves! They always think of doing Nigeria a favor! Yes, Igbos are doing well in commerce, but they forget other tribes are equally doing better in other sectors. That's how the settings are in all other part of the world. Each tribes or race with their own sector. Go to India, the movies sector are dominated by pple closed to Pakistani Border are they are mostly muslims. Their trades are controlled by another tribe called Sindi, while their Security and Army are dominated by the Punjabis. Check out America, entertainment and sport are dominated by the blacks! The Jews decedants govern the country. Same thing you will find in Spain. The Catalians dominate sports and the Andalus were the ones to first bring civilisations to Spain! So why can Igbos fight for what they think they deserve and stop crying like spoilt Child! Most times igbos shoot themselves in the foot in Nigeria Political calculations. And this is always due largely to vested interests! Senator Chris Ngige would have been the Senate President now, but what happened in the last election? He was voted out! No single returning member from majority party from the east! How will Igbo get a Speakership or Senate President slot when they are in opposition? And I bet it, in few months time the word "marginalization" will raised its head! And they forget that in the last 4 years of GEJ, Yorubas are not occupying first 10 position in Nigeria (Check!). What Yoruba did is to take bull by the horn, Now, a Yoruba is Vice-President-Elect. Bukola Saraki, a Yoruba man might also be a Senate President! Igbos should please stop this cry-cry stuff and rebuild their house and come out with a sellable Man as their Leader! If I may ask, Who is Igbo Leader?

I live in the north, and I can't tell u a single thing these people produce with their skills and bare hands. In terms of education, they are the least, in terms of infrastructure, they no follow, almajiris and beggars everywhere. Go to the igbo land, how many igbos do u see sending out able bodied children to go and beg on the streets? An igbo man will rather work till he drops dead to make sure his children can feed and go to school, but just come to the north and see an able bodied child, and even adults begging on the street. Very lazy set of people. Ain't ready to work hard, all they are interested in is fraud, and changing of figures. They claim they are the highest populated, yet they don't add any value to Nigeria, (apart from BH). Very aggressive set of people, who believe so much in blood shed. It's just so sad. Look at the igbo's where ever they are, they prosper, they create a living. Go to aba and see what those boys make with their hands, right now, only an igbo man produces cars in Nigeria, let another tribe come and boast of it lemme see. They say they can do without us, I laugh. Let's even see the possibility of that. And Stella, etc's write up is not a reply to what the oba said, don't get it twisted, etc just said the whole truth, coupled with the fact that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

The problem with Nigeria is "black man mentality". It doesn't matter under what guise it comes, black people hate themselves! From the USA to Jamaica, Canada, South Africa, Haiti, England, Brazil to Nigeria. Anywhere there are plenty of black people, they end up killing themselves! The metropolitan police in London had to set up a special unit called TRIDENT specifically dedicated to handle black on black crime, because the rate of occurrence was too high. Haba! No other community in UK has a special police department dedicated to investigating crimes associated with them maiming and murdering each other.

Black man get serious problem o! Always emotional, overbearing, refusing to back down, proud, over macho, and too willing to resort to violence. If you people like, call God's name till the cows come in, so long as we remain stubborn and defiant, blood will flow.

  41. My question is even if what is said here is true that the Igbos suffer from marginalisation, then why do Igbo governors ravage their states, steal public funds, do not develop their states when they are in the position to do so.

Keep blaming everybody else for your woes, you are your own worst enemy.
Ask yourselves why out of all the ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbos seems to be the only ones that are constantly picked on in one way or the other, while the rest of Nigeria gets on with it.
You have governors who are in the position to develop their states and they do nothing but siphon and mismanage state funds. Instead of you to hold them accountable, you conveniently blame other tribes for what is going on in your states.

I think playing this victim card has gone on for too long. How long do want to continue playing the victim.

  45. "It was peddled about that if Buhari had lost the election, there would have been trouble in the country and as a result, a lot of people voted against their wishes especially in the north."

I find this statement particularly distasteful. The pen is very powerful and those who are saddled with the responsibility of using them should be reasonable about it.

Stating beer parlor gist as fact isn't sensible. All I. Read here are disgruntled prejudiced talk. Ibos aren't a minority they should stop acting like it.

He blames yoruba, he blamed hausa, he blamed everyone except the Ibos for their woes. Ibos need to put thier house together. And come out as a formidable force they claim to be.

You can't be more yoruba than the yorubas, wether you like it or not even in advanced countries as a black man from. Africa there is a ceiling to how far you can go. Is it right, "NO", is it reality, "YES".

Your belief doesn't have to match reality. The idle world exist in only fairy tales. Accept the limits you have in another man's land or better still create Utopia in your own region.

It is remarkable some Ibos who are the biggest. Tribalist are complaining of tribalism.

No wonder the igbos are richer, go into lekki and most big houses on the island owned by the igbos. Hard work and a good heart pays ,quit the hate and grow

    7. This is the problem with social media. Anyone, like Anon 11:48, can come and rant and be provocative. For all we know he could be Hausa, Yoruba, Edo or Ghanaian trying to be mischievous and stoking things up. I saw a lot of this when I was a Naira land regular. One person with multiple IDs, logged on with different devices. With one Id he is yoruba another igbo, another liberal yoruba another right wing igbo etc. In fact, one person could be having an argument with himself under different aliases and making provocative statements all aimed at inflaming issues. That is why u have to take everything with a pinch of salt.

    8. Anon 11:26, the statement you find distasteful is unfortunately the truth. Are you in the north? Where you in the north before the elections?

See, our people there felt that if Buhari losses the election, the security issues we have as a country will get worst and there probably would be another civil war .So instead of leaving their investments and starting over or probably loosing their lives in a war, they decided to give him their votes. All my neighbours in Minna voted for Buhari, not because they wanted to, but because of 'their future'.

      Be guided.

What cultural similarities do the Igbos have with the Jews? I would safely wager that Yorubas are 'more Jewish? than Igbos, and you don't see them going about claiming 'stuff'

    Why? -
    1. Naming on the eighth day, same as Jews. Publicly naming children. Bearing gifts to the family
    2. Naming children after grandparents
    3. Twin births. Igbos killed twin babies. A town in Yorubaland has the highest number of twins in Nigeria. twins in Yorubaland are celebrated, same as Jews.
    4. Different rituals for girl and boy births
    5. Circumcision
    6. Funeral and mourning rights. Jews do not shave while mourning. Igbo women are required to shave their heads.
    7. Mourning dirge
    8. Covering mirrors when someone dies
    9. Finding things out about family before giving daughter in marriage

I could go on and on. You people should continue to deceive yourselves. Instead of y'all to look inside and find out why other tribes hate you, you are forever blaming others for your problems and inadequacies. The truth is no one cares.

Can you people stop saying Lagos is no man's land..the mere fact that you people have decided to make Lagos home doesn't make it "a no man's land"..consult your history textbooks and you will realise the Aworis own Lagos..You won't see a Yoruba or a Hausa man claim Imo is no man's land merely because he lives there..If you people are so sufficient in your region why not stay there? We Yoruba's are the most accommodating hence the reason why there is high influx of people from other region which will never happen in the East...Let's my Igbo brothers and sisters be realistic they ain't accommodating but truth be told they are very hardworking unlike other part of the nation...Let's try and come together as one and make the best out of the Nation...Shalom

Lagos can be said to be the most developed, this explains the reason for the influx of other people, not necessarily abt whether the tribe is accommodating or not. There is also a high influx in FCT and Port Harcourt. So don not be deceived.

If these Igbo people see another better developed place, they head there straight, no time. In the near future, development will come to their side, and you know what, they will move! They won't even miss Lagos. There is no place like home!

  63. Stella, I will encourage you to go and read Chimamanda Adichie's article on Olisatv. You don't have a right to tell the Igbos how to feel about this issue or when to get over it. If this issue of Igbos is new then we can all pretend not to understand where the anger and frustration is coming from. This is an on going thing in this country and as usual we the Igbos are forced to accept it and move on. This reminds me of my favorite quote: "First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communist and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionists. Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me." -Pastor Niemoeler (victim of the Nazis)
You may not agree with our frustration but please do not tell us how to feel or to meme it. One thing about my people is that the more they try to destroy or frustate us, the more ways we enlarge our fate.
