Korede Bello’s Live Performance On Church Altar Sparks Backlash

Korede Bello’s Easter performance at Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC), Lekki has led to a backlash from US-based Pastor Olusola Fabunmi.

The GodWin crooner who was invited to sing at the Lekki branch of the church led by Pastor Bolaji Idowu, performed his 'God Win' hit track with back-up vocals from the praise team of the church, to the excitement of everyone in attendance.

However Pastor Fabunmi of Victory Life Ministries International has reportedly reacted to this quoting James 4:4 “Friendship with the world is enmity to God? Whosoever therefore will be friend of the world is enemy of God.”

“Korede Bello is a young man I love personally, and have nothing against him. But it’s written here, that when we chose the way of the world, we have clearly chosen our paths; becoming an enemy of God. Please, there must be a clearly defined boundaries of who sings, and /or ministers in churches. Some of the questions that comes to mind are; is he born again? Sanctified with the spirit of God and baptized in the Holy Spirit,” he said.

“Also, let’s ask ourselves, what’s even the purpose of people singing in churches and Christian concerts? Where purpose is lacking, abuse is inevitable writes Francis Wale Oke in his book; The Power of the Holy Spirit. So I believe very strongly that one major purpose of choristers or Psalmists singing is to prepare the minds and hearts of the people for the word of God that is to come shortly; since we see in parable of the sower that the hearts of men is like a soil, and when the seed (which is the word of God) is sown, one of the factors that will determine the level of harvest yielded is the condition of the soil (hearts).”

“I wish to submit by saying that the only difference that makes the difference between church gatherings/ programs and others like clubs, parties is the Presence of Almighty God. If he is not there, we might spend hours and do all manners of spiritual gymnastics, it’s sheer of wasting of time, energy and resources. And the ministers who knows their onions do all it takes to secure his presence. But I think today in the word of a very senior man of God, one of the older generation, Dr. Ayodele who said in Houston recently, that churches in this generation has been reduced to ABC… Meaning; Attendance, Building and Cash," he concluded.

    1. It's totally ridiculous! Some may think it's hypocritical though. But I think you can't bring bring a secular artists to perform on an anointed altar. You may call him at your personal celebration to perform, that's OK but definitely not the church.
      GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

    4. Sadly, most folks will condemn the Pastor for saying the truth. There is a clear difference between secular music and gospel music. I still dont understand why some christians fail to realize that.

Sometime in Enugu, a certain church ( popular among students) organized a music concert at Okpara Square and Flavour Na'abania was invited as a guest musician!!!
I am not calling these musicians sinners but not everyone is fit to prepare the master's food....... which is praise and worship.

    5. Let God be God... how dare u judge? how dare u call him a sinner? Who made u the judge? God used a prostitute in d Bible 2 save the Israelites... the God I serve uses damaged vessels to his own glory... do u know if God wz using the young man 2 bless people? humans please, Let God be God. Do no assume the role... Look through ur Bible take not of God's blessings and u would notice what I call "God's blessings through the damaged"... my 2 cents

    6. A.b chic, you've got it all wrong. Calling something what it is, is not condemnation. Christians must be discerning especially in these days. The Bible says "by their fruit, we shall know them".
The church must be kept sacred.
When God used Rahab the prostitute was it via her practice? Was she leading men to her bed and doing Gods work at the same time?
Asking that God be God is completely contrary to what Christ instructs because if only God can be Godly then why should anyone walk in the spirit?
You sound like an agnostic - someone who views God as a being so far off that He cannot be known. Spending more time one on one with God will reveal the truth of the Bible.

  16. Truth be told, its wrong. It doesn't go together at all. Besides what was he singing? If you sing secular stick to it, if its gospel all well and good. How can you invite kwam 1 or Tubaba to come and do a special appearance to minister in the church, it won't work, well except they have become well known born again Christians that have started singing gospel.

My brother used to be in Winners choir, I remember him telling me one time that what goes on among choir members is enough to make someone backslide.
If you want to catch all the bad people in church, look at the choristers first. And this pastor is talking about spirit filled, tongue-speaking singers...oga pastor they are all the same.
Even pastors are sleeping with members, what's the difference between a spirit filled Pastor gbenshing his member e.g the COZA uncle or the man who doesn't go to church and spends nights at brothels with sex workers? Nor be the same fornication sin dem go answer for?
Nigerians will carry religion on their heads.
When Jona was going to churches to stylishly campaign, how many pastors condemned it?
What happened to don't look at the preacher but listen to the message? There is an exception because he sings secular music abi?

    1. You have a point Jayem. But let's model our spiritual convictions along the line of those who do it right by God. Granted all the examples u cited are ominous and existing in the present day churches. Sadly so, but let's take a cue from the ones that have not been infiltrated by gross moral decadence. Yes we can

      Delete
  27. Very true,..this is the reason why no spiritual growth in churches....punctuating a song with the word God doesn't make u a gospel artist....yes anyone can sing a song to praise God but those who are truly called into music ministry inspire you to worship....this is a reason why most Christians have one leg in church and one leg out cos anything goes....a church is a place to build people spiritually but if you bring people simply to entertain or cos their song is popular then you keep breeding Christians without any strong spiritual growth

    1. You are so right mama. Makes me remember Ebenezer Obey of the old days. He's always been one who sings about God and good morals back then. However, he wasn't born again. Yet his songs were churcheous.

Fast fwd to now that he's born again. He is now the toast of pentecostal churches and various crusades. And he still sings the same songs that he recorded in the 70s and 80s, songs that were done when he wasn't born again. Save for the new but very few ones he just added.

Meaning, people rarely pay attention to the songs.. but the singer and their spiritual disposition.

Back then not many paid attention to the lyrics from Ebenezer Obey or whether it was church worthy. But now that the man has become born again, they suddenly relate to his lyrics and find them church worthy.

Perhaps if this young chap declared Christ in the coming year, this same song they condemn may suddenly become the toast of every revival assembly.

  28. Why won't they patronise d gospel artistes, they are hardly invited to the 'worldy'(for lack if a better word) shows, why take away their shine by inviting a worldly musician to where they are supposed to be invited to. What happened to inviting, sinachi, tope alabi, yinka ayefele, midnight crew etc. This is all shades of wrong.

  38. I agree with this pastor hands down. The song is not a spiritual song. Does it give God glory? You don't come to church and invite just anyone to mount the alter of God and just sing anything. There is order in the house of God and pentecostal churches in the bid to be hip and trendy are guilty of this. Mind you I'm pentecostal. That's how years back when Wande Cole 'Jehova' song was trending, someone recommended we sing it in church n I moved against that motion strongly. It is wrong. Praise and Worship is spiritual and not just some feel good music.

  42. There is some truth in what he is saying but he missed it when he recommended gospel musicians because a good number of them live controversial lives and are not worthy of emulation.

They re either gay or lesbian, divorced several times over, sexually bankrupt predators of younger upcoming artistes, fraudsters who collect money and don't perform, or just arrogant morally bankrupt.

They choose the gospel music genre simply because they can make money from it, end of story.

Many say with their mouths "Jesus is Lord" but their hearts are dark.
