RE: CHRONICLES - UNDER PRESSURE TO MARRY The lady who is under pressure to marry must  back out of the AS+ASrelationship immediately because her  story will only end in tragedy. I have a very nasty experience about AS+AS marriage that has  been very fresh in my memory. My uncle (he is late now) married his wife in the '50s and  they were both of AS genotype. They were able  to have five children  (three boys and two girls). The first child,a boy,  was a sickle cell patient. The second child, a boy, was okay. The third child, a girl,  was a sickle cell patient. The fourt child, a girl, was also a sickle  cell patient. The last child,a boy, was also okay. The sickle cell children were giving my uncle a hell of a  time as he was always buying drugs and doing blood  transfusion to make sure that they lived for a long time. Folic acid was sent  from abroad by a concerned relative in America, but it was only  to prolong their suffering. After many years of costly medical  treatment of sickle cell anaemia, with yellow pupils and yellow nails,  the fourt child (a girl) died of the sickle cell disease. Her death led to the remaining two refusing to take  their medications as they saw it as a complete waste of time and  resources. The third child died, leaving the family with three children.  Not long, the last sickle cell patient of the  family and the first son  of the family died in 2003, leaving behind the only two healthy  children of the family. The two healthy boys are alive now. However, their mother is constantly grieving  about her loss. Even though the knowledge of genotypes was  ignored in the olden days, medical practitioners have made it clear  to us how dangerous it is to risk marrying AS+AS. After visiting and interviewing many medical  doctors, I borrowed from my uncle's tragic experience to write a novel on  the consequences of AS+AS marriage entitled THE PRIZE OF IGNORANCE  (though a typist  lost the manuscript, I can always create another story  from the synopsis I published in another novel). In a nutshell, if you come across a friend who is  beclouded by ''infatuation'' to claim considering an AS boy/girl for  marriage, when he/she is equally of AS genotype, advise him/her  to forget it and look for another boy/girl that has AA genotype.  No amount of love can equate watching your kid die of  sickle cell  anaemia when you could have prevented it by listening to good pieces of advice  from friends and family. Every sickle cell patient in these modern  times is only the prize of ignorance and it is very costly. .............................................................................................................
