Ikorodu Residents Protest 'Crazy' Electricity Bills

On Monday In Lagos,Some residents of Ikorodu carried out a peaceful protest to press home their demand for a realistic electricity billing system .

The protesters stormed the venue of the flag off of the Ikorodu-Sagamu road by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola with placards to demand for prepaid metres.

Some of the protesters who spoke to newsmen said they had complained to PHCN office several times about estimated bills to no avail. Mr Otitoloju Samuel, a resident of Lowa, said the estimated bills had caused serious problems for the residents.

Mrs Lucy Adebayo and other residents of Benson in Lowa, said power was usually supplied to their area for a few hours during the day. According to them, they hardly use electricity because they are not usually at home within the hours electricity is supplied to their area yet they get outrageous bills at the end of every month.

Responding to their demands, Fashola said the Buhari administration was focused on making prepaid metres available to all electricity consumers in the nation. He, however, stressed the need for residents to learn to conserve energy, stating that the power situation was going to get better. He advised electricity consumers to learn to conserve power by turning off appliances when leaving home as well limit use of heavy duty appliances and equipment. He also stressed the need for residents to manage water consumption, stating that between 80 to 100 kilowatts was needed to pump water. If you conserve water, you would save energy.

  8. The same thing happened in my parent area in Lagos. Outrageous electric bill that prompted residents to protest and demand for prepaid metre NEPA refused to give them prepaid rather they came and disconnect the light of the whole area. For close to 6months they've bn leaving without one of the basic necessity of life.
Nawwwaaah ooh.. Naija which way forward? People were thinking privatizing the sector will improve light supply rather the opposite becomes the case with outrageous NEPA bill.
That's why we must ensure Federal government should not privatized the health sector as doctors are agitating bcos any thing privatized in Nigeria becomes worst .

  9. They will give 5 bedroom duplex 27k and give mini flat 50k. Who does that?

  10. I thought it was only me! 13k that ghosts make use of because it definitely wasn't me.
I can count the miserable number of hours I get light...90% is between the hours of 9pm to 5am so tell me how I'm supposed to be billed 13k on estimate?
They have wickedly refused to distribute the remaining prepaid meters because they know that their corruption will cease. My colleague uses 3k prepaid card for months! Has more appliances than I but here I am getting 13k bill monthly. Come and do an assessment and bill me properly mba, give me post paid meter naa mba, oya where's my prepaid that I'm entitled to? No answer! Rather they prepare to slam me with outrageous bills. It will never be well with the Ikeja electric distribution zone.
Government is corrupt, government is corrupt as if it's spirits that parade the corridors of power and not human beings. Everybody wants to rip the next person off yet any small thing...Nigeria is not good. It will never be good until we start doing the right things!

    1. Instead of cursing take them to court. People still think they are dealing with a government owned company. No no no. This is a private company and you can press charges if aggrieved. Recently an IKEDC official was jailed for disconnecting electricity to the house of a consumer. He didn't know the consumer was a lawyer. The rest is history now...

  16. My own grouse is with Ikeja electric IKEDC. They promised 16 to 18 hours of light but bring for 12hours per day in low current sometimes. You put on Sumo water pump it's making whizzing sound meanwhile IKEDC are busy painting and refurbishing their offices.

Give full current if and when you wan give light not half current. Is it too much to ask for?

  17. These mad ikeja electric people. My bill rose from 3k, to 11k then 12k. Bunch of crazy and demonic people. Bunch of exploiters. I just hate them with an overwhelming passion. I have complained tire, nothing has been done. People are suffering in this country. I curse them, whoever is behind this surge in electric bills, I curse you. All of you behind the instability of the economy and making life hard for common people, I curse you from my heart. It shall not be well with you all. You will spend the money you steal from government nursing sicknesses and diseases. Your peace is taken from you, your health is taken from you. As you have made life hard for us, life will be hard for you. Wicked souls. #iampissedsodontsayanyrubbishundermycommentjustscrollaway

  18. The estimated billing system is the greatest fraud ever perpetuated against Nigerian citizens by its own government. People get charged for services they never received, and the poor masses are being MILKED!!!!

Refusing to give people prepaid meters is a deliberate move to keep milking and milking without repercussions. The discos are smiling every month and earning fat salaries for doing supplying few hours of light and the government is aiding and abetting them and probably being settled for standing by and doing nothing. Go to their offices and see how large them are living. Their top management are in paradise because their pay is criminal. Government officials and politicians bought those discos intending to add no value to what was on ground and just use power Nigerians as perpetual cash cows.

The truth is never exposed in this country, because we the masses are kept busy with propaganda and struggling to survive.

I have prepaid in my house, but when I see and hear what the poor are made to pay from their sweat, I feel like blowing up something!!!

Excuse my rant, I just had to let it out.
