Actor Pete Edochie And Ooni Of Ife's Controversial Handshake At Philanthropist Elizabeth Jackrich's Birthday

The Ooni of Ife and actor Pete Edochie met at the Birthday party of Elizabeth Jackrich and both men shook hands and went about their enjoyment but jobless netizens are trying to cause Online misunderstanding with their comments...

They say Pete should have prostrated to greet the Ooni (The way EX President Obasanjo did) but some people are arguing that Pete is a titled Chief and cannot greet anyone like that......
What do you think?

    1. Exactly. The culture doesn't bind on Pete Edochie. It's not an Igbo thing or culture prostrating and again, When it's not even in the Ooni's palace.

    2. Exactly what I wanted to type Ezege. Prostrating isn't an igbo culture and Pa Pete is an elderly titled man.

    1. Oh you saw that. I think it's the Ooni that brought out his hand first. I see nothing wrong here. I also saw a picture of Femi Otedola shaking the Ooni with just one hand. He's a Yoruba man and he wasn't dragged but Pete.

  12. I just love the man Pete Edochie and his dance move. So intriguing and exciting at the same time. So much Aura... What a man.

The first time I met him, his presence commanded so much respect and admiration to behold.

Ebubedike is such a great man.

    Now to answer the question.

Pete didn't do anything wrong rather he showed the Ooni great respect by the back handshake he gave him thrice. That's a great traditional greetings in Igbo land.

Again, the Igbo are republicans in nature and as such everyone is a king in his own domain and can only bow to his chi(god) There is a title in Igbo land known as ''Okwu oto ekeneze''. So people should understand what that means and don't drag Ebubedike over nonsense. He's a revered titled man and a god of himself.

  14. When did prostrating become an Igbo culture? Me that is not even a titled man cannot prostrate for the Ooni, provided i didnt go to his palace to meet him.
How can people now expect an elderly Igbo Chief to prostrate for the Ooni in a public event? E get things wey no suppose cause argument.

  18. Two great men met at an event, the one sitting stretched out his hand and happily greeted the other in the latter's traditional way of greeting, in respect and solidarity. Then some jobless individuals took it upon themselves to compare and contrast what's not there to.

Even Kanayo greeted the Oni in same manner, didn't you guys see that one too? The fact that Odumodu is way older than the Oni is enough reason the Oni should accord him respect. Infact, he was star- struck to see Ebubedike 1!!

So some of you Yorubas actually wanted a title man like Ebubedike to disobey his own culture and obey Yoruba's own?
    That's abomination.

Ooni 1st stretched out his hand for the handshake and he also did same when KOK waved at him.

The three off them were ok with the handshake, so why are you guys fighting over it.

  21. I found this great piece on twitter and will like to share about the Igbo identity and culture.

Ihu Chi - Shrine to the self.

''In the old days, when a young man gets to the first stages of manhood in Igbo land, and has asked his father for the authority to establish his own homestead, and once he has built his Ovu/Obu/Obi meeting house and his own living quarters, the eldest living male of his lineage (Di Opara Nna) carries out the ritual of planting of what we call his tree of life at the shrine in which he establishes an altar to his “indwelling Chi” i.e his spiritual self & cuts his “Ofo” which he keeps at his shrine.

Odinani (The #Igbo religion) believes that we are “gods” on an experiential journey through the earth. That is why Igbo men are forbidden to bow to anything. They use their right hands - their "Aka Ikenga" - for salutation.

A man is only forced to huru (bow) as a form of subjection and humiliation (Today, some Ndi Igbo bow due to the influences of cultures where bowing to authority is the norm - British, Yoruba & Hausa).

All Igbo men, therefore, hold an Ofo, which compels them to act with the highest moral authority in the land. Such a man is forbidden, while his ofo is in his goatskin bag to lie, or carry out any form of Aru (Abomination) which might weaken his Ofo, because the Ofo is also connected to his Chi.
And it is his Chi (created by the high God; Chineke) that guides him through life.

This is reflected in our names; Chinedu, Chidimma, Chika, Chizoba, Chioma, Chiamaka e.t.c. Your Ofo compels you to seek peace during disputes to avoid murder which is an abomination.''

  22. I watched the video and the ooni raised both arms to hail Ebubedike before they proceeded to shake hands. He was obviously excited to see Pa Pete and the latter even went over to greet him bcos he respects him. The fact that some people expect a titled chief and grand father to prostrate for the ooni in a public function is an insult to his person.

  23. Pete Edochie should have postrated? I don't understand,do people still have sense?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am Yoruba and I don't see what Pete Edochie did that was wrong, we have different people with different cultures that should be respected.

Why would a title igbo man bow to the kng, meanwhile there is a picture of Otedola giving the ki g hand shakes too but nobody is talking about that.......

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes Femi Otedola can give this present Ooni a handshake cos he's an O.P.P king who doesn't see himself as a first class king a woman wrapper who doesn't respect his throne. Can Femi Otedola stretch his hand to shake the late Ooni of Ife Oba Okunade Sijuade Olubuse 11 Femi dares not cos Oba Okunade Sijuade is a king of dignity.
