Judge Declares NASS N110bn Spending Spree Unlawful....

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the National Assembly’s plan to spend N110 billion on vehicles and allowances for lawmakers is unlawful. The court held that the spending violated procurement laws, the constitution, and the duty of public officials to act in the public interest.

Justice Yellim Bogoro delivered the judgment on May 6, 2026, in a suit filed by the Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The case, instituted in 2023, listed Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas as defendants.

The National Assembly Planned N40 billion for 465 vehicles for federal lawmakers and N70 billion as “support allowances” for newly elected members
The court found that the spending was carried out without due process, including competitive bidding and transparency. It described the move as arbitrary and inconsistent with rules governing the use of public funds, especially at a time when many Nigerians are facing economic hardship.

Justice Bogoro stressed that public officials must uphold transparency, accountability, and value for money. The ruling directs the National Assembly to comply fully with procurement and constitutional requirements in all future expenditures.
