Filmmaker Ola Balogun Donates Self After Death To Medical Schools

Veteran filmmaker Ola Balogun has made his final wishes public after suffering a fresh health scare shortly after his eighty‑first birthday. Currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Lagos, he said he could not reach a lawyer to prepare a formal will, so he released his instructions openly.

Balogun directed that once he dies, any healthy organs should be donated to people in need, and whatever remains of his body should be handed over to a medical institution for training future doctors. He says he wants his body to remain useful to humanity even after death.

He explained that a recent medical alert forced him to confront the possibility of not surviving, and he was inspired by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who wrote his final will shortly before his passing.

Balogun is one of the pioneers of Nigerian cinema, known for films and documentaries in English, Yoruba, Pidgin and Igbo. His works include Alpha, Ija Ominira, Amadi, Nigersteel, Ajani Ogun, Musik Man and Oorun Moru.
