"Whenever they turn the light on me at a movie set, the director would say I was too dark. I didn't pay much attention to this until one day someone said I looked like a monkey. This made me bleach my skin so that I could get more jobs." She said
Habibat said the decision did work at first. After bleaching, she started getting more roles because directors now saw her as "fair enough" for camera but the bleaching ruined her skin. Wounds refused to heal, and she started developing permanent scars all over her body. The turning point came in 2023 after she had a baby.
She says that fellow actress Adunni Ade saw her and gave her the confidence she needed. She said that after she stopped and returned to her natural dark skin, people started mocking her and saying she was broke and couldn't afford bleaching creams. Habibat concluded by claiming she has learned to embrace her natural skin, stressing that black is beautiful and urged others struggling with any habit they are no longer comfortable with to find the courage to quit.

ReplyDeleteIm same as you stella. Ive just started to love my lightskin. I was bullied cos of it in school and told that i was ugly and my saving grace was lightskin. I desparately wanted to be dark so bad cos it was just so pretty and glowing and so not basic
ReplyDeleteMoral lesson don’t let anyone make you feel less of yourself, no matter what always believe in yourself 👍
ReplyDeleteReal beauty comes in all shades. Shaming people for their natural skin is wrong. No one should be forced to change their skin tone just to get a job. People will always talk...whether you change yourself or stay natural....it is best to be yourself.
ReplyDeleteI am glad she finally found the confidence to love her natural skin again.
