UK May Jail Nigerian Couple For Enslaving A Nigerian

A Nigerian couple face a maximum sentence of 14 years’ imprisonment for secretly enslaving a Nigerian in Britain for 25 years.

Dr Emmanuel Edet, 59, and his wife Antan Edet, 56, have been charged with holding a person in servitude and immigration offences. They will appear at Harrow Crown Court later this month, Mail Online reported.
Scotland Yard is said to be investigating the case, after a Nigerian, Ofonime Sunday Edet, walked into a police station and claimed he was being held as a slave. Ofonime Edet, 38, said he has been held against his will since being trafficked to Britain in 1989, when he was just 13.
Edet told officers he was first enslaved by the couple in Nigeria, after his father’s death, with a promise to provide work, lodging and an education so he could support his family.
Instead, he claims, he was lured to Britain and forced to undertake menial tasks for years for little or no pay while being threatened not to speak to anyone else.
He was inspired to break free by the national outcry surrounding the release last October of a group of women held in a cult-like Maoist ‘slave house’, according to Mail Online
Dr Edet is a respected gynaecologist who worked for Surrey County Council and has written several academic works on child welfare.
He is an expert on teenage pregnancy and who worked as a non-clinical adviser and is the author of guidelines followed by hundreds of health workers. His wife is a senior ward manager at Ealing Hospital, less than four miles from their modern terraced home in Perivale, North West London.culled

  13. I may be wrong but I figure he's now exposed and feels he should have gotten more. Probably asked them and they declined. They sure must have promised him and his people a better life for him but did not heed their own side of the bargain and he may have stayed intimidated for a long while obviously. Whatever the case, the outcome won't augur well for the doctor and his wife. Wow!

    1. Gbam. He has made friends and now wants to live life. UK authorities are very smart. They will judge based on which side benefits the society more. The houseman may even be deported as he is not a tax payer and is not specially skilled.

  14. one sided story.
the united kingdom is such a free place. they couldn't have been able to hold him for that long. he is old enough to have been able to step out, go to the Nigerian embassy and push to be sent back to Nigeria or nah.
neighbors are nosy. they could have sensed something unusual.
I strongly sense that he is trying to get back at them for something that happened but i might be wrong.
except he is mentally or physically challenged.something is definitely wrong somewhere and ONLY God knows. this story no complete.

    1. Nahhh you've missed the point. There's a difference btw being mentally subdued and bring physically incapacitated. In this case he was just 13 when they took to him. And not being able to spk to anyone doesn't mean that he had no friends or outsiders that he would spk with.

What I think he means by that is that he was constrained with what to discuss with anyone. It doesn't seem like he suffered any physical abused, so much to attract their neighbours or outsiders. I think that he was bullied to silence on the grounds that he would be deprived of the benefits of living with them in the UK, and of course, that his family back home would be deprived too. And if he lived with them illegally that would also be used as a bait to bully him, further. he was simply vulnerable, hence. I suspect that someone liberated him from the mental shackles, to understand that he could be better in life outside of this couple. He would have examined the pros and cons before speaking to the police. And I also believe that perhaps another close relative aided and took him to the station.
