Ebola Virus - Blog Visitor Doctor Elohor Proposes Drug Treatment.

-ATTENTION PRESIDENT JONATHAN OF NIGERIA.
-ATTENTION HEALTH MINISTER
-ATTENTION ALL GOVERNORS.
-ATTENTION INTERESTED HEALTH BODIES.

I am so pissed with Maurice Iwuh and his office!...Yes,i say so because they contacted me and i gave them Elohor's contact but they did not reach out to her. This Lady has been making frantic efforts to tell that she has a possible cure but no one is hearing her out but they are spending monies on monitoring people and not finding a cure.
Is is because she is a woman or because she is Nigerian?will they take this more serious if she was an expatriate doctor?Hissssss
Elohor is desperate to show how her proposal works so she has sent a little bit of what she proposes...This is just a tip of what she has....if no one contacts her and Ebola takes over Nigeria, then so be it!

THERAPEUTIC TRIALS FOR DRUG TREATMENT OF EBOLA VIRUS INFECTION

The Ebola virus (EBOV) belongs to a family of three very virulent viruses known as the filoviruses (Filoviridae). The Filoviridae is comprised of Ebola, Marburg and the Cuevavirus.  Although differing in genome structure and areas of endemicity (where they are found), the filoviruses produce similar patterns of virulence and clinical manifestations.

Infection with either Ebola or Marburg virus results in a spectrum of disease including the “viral hemorrhagic fevers.”
The virus is very pathogenic, and known to survive up to 3hours on contaminated surfaces, lasting longer within fluid medium. Between 60-90% of persons who acquire the disease are likely to die from its complications.
Routes of Infection and Mode of Transmission.

The Ebola virus enters the human population through contact with infected animals. Several animals have been implicated in Africa; including chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats (known reservoir), monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines. Some of these are commonly consumed as “bush meat.”

Infection occurs through direct contact with the body fluids (blood and secretions {saliva, mucus, urine, semen and stool}) of an infected animal and can then be spread from person to person.
The known modes of transmission are outlined below:
  • Animal to Person transmission (e.g hunters; butchering and consuming infected meat)
  • Person to person (including contact with sick persons, corpses and sexual intercourse)
  • Contact with fomites (beddings, medical devices, syringes, utensils, etc.)
Through a review of scientific materials and laboratory researches by peer scientists spanning over two decades, I found that EBOV displayed striking bio-molecular, chemical and physical similarities with HIV-1 and the orthomyxoviridae (influenza virus). These organisms have existing and effective therapeutic compounds which can be exploited by immunological mechanisms to suppress EBOV at corresponding points of vulnerability.

Image

Some vulnerable and exploitable points of activity within the virus include its genome activity, membrane/extracellular binding, mechanism of immune system disruption, and intracellular/ lysosomal binding.  Pharmacological agents aimed at inhibiting these processes will successfully hinder viral activity, replication and virulence, curbing the disease.
This may be one of the major ways to reduce the incidence of the disease among contacts of already infected persons, suppress infection in persons within the incubation period, and support therapy of patients in the early phase of the disease. Replacing or boosting immune factors (interleukins 6 and -1B) also promises to be helpful in increasing survival rates of infected persons. Patients being observed in isolation may benefit from receiving the appropriate immune factors and an existing influenza vaccine can be exploited and modified to elicit immunological protection among health workers exposed to infected patients.

Two classes of antiretroviral agents (protease and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors) are capable of mimicking and eliciting similar responses within the Ebola virus as they do within HIV-1. Protease inhibitors will block the cleavage of EBOV’s membrane protein (GP) preventing binding to intracellular lysosomes where it undergoes replication. Ritonavir or the more specific Giardia cysteine protease inhibitors are highly promising pharmacological agents for this therapeutic trial.

Unlike the HIV-1 virus, the Ebola virus does not possess a reverse transcriptase enzyme. Instead, one of its proteins, VP 30, acts both as a transcription or replicating factor.  However, just like in HIV-1, nucleoside inhibitors can act as DNA analogues, become phosphorylated by similar kinases, and incorporate into a replicating chain, halting this vital process.

The result is a decreased viral load within the patient which not only promotes survival but also decreases the ability to infect others. Notably, only a few specific drugs within this group demonstrate the right relationship with the Ebola virus. A good example is Ribavirin.

Effective and practical combinations of these agents are essential to maintain efficacy. All researched drug groups have been approved by the United States FDA, NAFDAC and other relevant health bodies. It is imperative to take advantage of science and the potential safety offered by these groups of drugs to treat the suffering and protect the uninfected.
It is worth mentioning that some organisms retain certain distinct biochemical properties that may cause them to behave erratically and block beneficial immunological processes. In this case, a clear understanding of the EBOV’s biochemistry and points of vulnerability as outlined in this review outcome, will guide swift production of vaccines, and manipulation of already existing chemotherapeutics so that a quick and lasting solution can be found.
This may be the best way to halt the potential catastrophe.

    1. Dr Elohor didn't propose a new drug o, she's saying that they should try some drugs that are already around with us. I have actually thought of these her suggestions, like I think the health minister may have done too...and may have even gone ahead to try.
Really, Elohor doesn't need voltrons, she knows how to fight her battles. She's a strong, determined lady...if she really wants to meet GEJ for this matter, trust me, she will. I know her that well (She must have reached them already sef)... If they haven't tried it (which I doubt, cos in a time like this when there's no known cure, they would have tried all the antiviral and antiretroviral agents), then they shd pls do...

    6. This is an intricate matter that needs ONLY those with experience and insight to discuss and experiment before making public. To every other person here like myself, we may think that the govt or those that matter are ignoring the suggestions. It's not the case. I should know.

  2. I don't know why our govt refuse to at least even try the nano suppliment
America is just using our head.
They brought this Ebola to Africa for experimentation and for their own gain and it's really sad that the nigerian govt is falling for it.

Please let's at least try the other available treatments since America has refused to give us the Zmapp.
As we all know their refusal to give the Zmapp is for the virus to spread and then their aim will be fully achieved so they can start selling their drug.

A stitch in time saves nine.

    3. @ Lyn

I quite understand that at this time given the situation we r caught up in, emotions can b roused but I don't think it will b too much a harm if we apply a degree of reasoning to d claims of Dr Rima on the Nano Silver before dealing d sentimental cards. Although America may not v shown much interest in d quest to help us in Nigeria given their actions n inactions but have u paused to ponder on :

Which African Countries Dr Rima n his team helped in d past? Is there a Documentary Evidence? Can these countries attest to d fact that their cases were reduced due to Nanosilver usage?

She said it kills every pathogen it has been tested against worldwide wit no exception but she is more specific wit bacteria but basic biology teaches us that bacteria r different frm Viruses.

On why it hasn't been approved globally, she said it's cos it has to go thru different stages of trialling but she said it works wen it hasn't been trialled or is it under trial currently? She telepathically knows d safe n therapeutic doses without trial.

This 'drug' touted as being able to fight against bacteria, fungi, protozoa n viruses will b a huge relief to our medical problems if endorsed. Am not doubting d efficacy or potentiality of Nano Silver, am only suing that emotions shud b kept at d backburners n empirical reasoning b allowed to take d wheels.

Our very own N. Dr.  Agwoturumbe whom we may not take serious wit his American idols has activated scientific minds wit his posture on how a 'Nano Silver drug' can 'cure' the viral Ebola.

While we root for the Health Officials or Bodies saddled wit d onerous task of d EVD curtailment, to explore every possibility, we must sue for them to take under advisement d need to screen every claim n subject same to scientific and ethical reasonings.

I wish Dr Elohor Okpeva well. God bless her for the painstaking research and may her inputs b of help.

      Happy day to all BVs!

I even prefer ribavirin use because Ebola is a RNA virus just like lassa fever and ribavirin is used invite treatment so there won't be much harm in trying it out on Ebola....
Please ribavirin ain't a new drug I just hope the Nigerian government give it a try and they shouldn't discredit her proposal just because she ain't white...you know Nigerians have slavish and racist mentality anything a white man does is golden and when it's a black man its medal less

    2. My dear she doesn't need to give up the drug the drug has been known for about 3 decades now...the drug is fda and nafdac approved
it was even used in treating lassa fever since way back 1979.... The simple truth is Nigeria and.Nigerians love free things....and that drug is expensive... Nigerian government doesn't deem it fit to tru an expensive drug on people so they rather the health personnels that volunteered try the subsidized HIV antiretroviral drugs.
Ribavirin is used in treating lassa fever which is also a viral hemorrhagic fever just like Ebola.. So I can understand why she is putting this idea forward...
The cost of ribavirin for the duration of use in the treatment of lassa fever is roughly 1.2million in naira for 10days and that's if you are taking the parenteral equivalent in capsules which may not be that effective.... And yet during some report of lassa fever endemic this.year the.govt didn't deem it
The duration of treatment for ebola is yet to be known cause it hasn't even being tried.....even if the.govt sees this I believe they won't want to give it a try because of the money involved..the money is small compared to politicians take home but trust me Nigeria is blessed with a greedy bunch that will rather take their family abroad all.because of a bruise than.invest in the health sector of Nigeria.

My fiance notified the head pastor of our scheduled date for wedding, he agreed and mentioned the things he shud bring plus compulsory project fee totalling 23k. He kept telling him to bring the money if he can't get the things. He went to church yesterday gave him the money and came home. We were about taking the iv cards to a printer when he just said let him call the pastor only for the pastor to say no that he never agreed on his date. We shud shift to the next weekend. Jesus christ..... and he was like 'pastor I have committed alot of vendors for this date and you said weeks ago you were ok with the date which you even told me to write an application'. You won't believe this pastor opened his mouth to say we shud go and tell the printer to change dates when my fiance told him more than half of the cards were printed. I'm confused we don't even know what to do. The vendors we committed aren't free the weekend he said we shud shift to(you know how this vendors behave once they collect your money). I'm so confused I dunno what to do again. Sorry about the epistle dear blog family.

You can make it a post and people will make suggestions. We can use a hashtag or something to get attention to the right people. Well meaning Nigerians will donate if they are sure their monies won't be swindled. I sent you the video of the ALS challenge yesterday. Paul Frates started it to find a cure. We can do same with Ebola. Please think about it and come up with something. God bless you.

Dey are praying and hoping it spreads dat y a nurse under quarantine can leave and travel to enugu unnoticed.mainwhile dey claim her immediate family are bin monitored, yet she travelled wit one of dem.now people are bin monitored in enugu.pls let's wake up,dey wont contact her cos dey are scared it might work and even if dey do,dey wuld either rubbish it or won't administer it correctly. And sadly most African countries are in on dis,cos of d corruption in leadership, especially those close to elections. WATCH America will soon start pumping huge sums to dis countries thru W.H.O. I believe der is a cure. But will only b released after lots of monies have exchanged hands. Dats my take. I hope u publish. Thanks

  39. Lol! Stella, I laugh in Chinese. Look I'm a health worker in 9ja. All the medications she mentioned are not new nor strange to us and she might have a point but I laugh because before there was Ebola, there was and there still is Lassa fever that causes similar symptoms and is just as deadly. But in the case of Lassa, if suspected early enough and you give Ribavirin the patient has a high chance of survival. I'm laughing because the last time we had a suspected case we were told that there's no Ribavirin in Nigeria. Mind you the name Lassa was gotten from a town lassa in Borno state where the first cases were recorded. I don't mean to be rude and I commend you and Dr Elohor but I think she shouldn't bother herself too much if she doesn't get a response. We are in a long thing in this country

    1. Na wa oh!, May God help this country. I actually read up on Ribavirin and from what i read it was used in the treatment of SARS and haemorraghic fever. Is there anyway individuals can acquire this drug?. Since it doesnt seem our governement gives a shit about us. I wont be suprised if the health minister and co have already stocked up for their personal use.

They shouldn't think they will be left out if ebola spreads.it will also reach their household.

  45. May God punish whoever doesn't want to give dis woman a chance to show case wat she has upstairs (her brain). This is lack of interest in Nigerian researchers is how Nigeria loses their best brains to the western world and later dey will complain of brain drain. Prof Maurice Iwu and his abandoned research dat left d lab to go into politics, does he still remember standard lab practice, very soon d billions of naire GEJ released wil go to dia private account. Let d blood of all who will die of dis EVD be on d head of doz greedy and selfish ppl. Who will soon fly dia loved ones out of nigeria.

Meanwhile your comments give me hope. Someday, our dream Nigeria will come through...

I really don't know what we stand to lose by inviting this Doctor over so they can rub minds, exchange ideas, proffer a solution and see how we can nip this virus in the bud.

All these old miserable politicians, Isn't this prof Iwu too old to think straight? Corrupt politicians be gambling with people's lives.

  56. I have read with interest your postings on the various Ebola cure claims making the rounds both in our national media and the internet. While it may not be possible to respond to all the internet postings, I wish to assure that all claims of possible cure are being evaluated by the Treatment Research Group on Ebola virus disease established by the Minister of Health of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Of which Prof. Iwu is ONLY a member.

It is a medical fact that the filoviruses, Marburg and Ebola, have the dubious distinction of being associated with some of the highest case-fatality rates of any known infectious disease. It is now public knowledge that there is no cure - for filovirus-haemorrhagic-fevers (FHF) - No specific drug or vaccine has been approved for the treatment of FHF. There is a consensus among the health-care community that despite the sense of urgency to intervene when faced with the devastating social and economic impacts of filovirus outbreaks in Africa, no compromises can be made on safety. Therapies and vaccines that show promise in animal models must first progress to Phases I and II clinical trials, which might include workers in high-containment laboratories and members of outbreak response teams. However, given the overwhelming human suffering associated with filovirus outbreaks, Nigeria is exploring all possible ways of safely expediting promising therapies and preventive strategies to compassionate use.
Experimental therapies for the FHFs can be divided into those designed to directly block filovirus replication and those that act indirectly through the modification of deleterious host responses. The TRG on Ebola virus Treatment is currently considering both classes of drugs.

Dr. Elohor Effiong’s article is only a suggestion of possible application of a class of drugs which may have a possible application in this case. It would have been interesting to read any previous publication by the writer on this subject but a search on both the ‘NIH-Scopus’ and ‘Science Direct’ indexes showed no such publication. Instead Dr. Effiong promises a ‘complete scientific review to be disclosed to interested academic peers and other health bodies involved in Ebola management’. Fortunately, science does not work that way. Medical science relies on evidence, published and accessible. While we accept the possible use of experimental drugs, this does not confer on the TRG license to experiment on people’s lives with experimental drugs. To date there are over 40 such claims like that of Dr. Effiong.

Based on the review of the positive outcomes o treatments of FHF from past outbreaks, the most fundamental of questions and a logical place to start in the work of FHF is to assess the impact of aggressive supportive care. It is interesting to note that the case-fatality rate of the only human filovirus outbreak (excluding isolated cases) to occur in an area where aggressive supportive care was routinely possible – Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Germany and Yugoslavia in 1967 – was 22%, compared to up to 90% in the large outbreaks Africa. The so-called ZMapp wonder drug may be difficult to fully evaluate considering the effect of the excellent care in an American facility. The Nigerian outcome figures is in fact the most impressive so-far and it is based on careful clinical management.
