Lassa Fever Kills Doctor In Rivers State

Chairman of the NMA in Rivers state, Furo Green, has disclosed that Doctor Living Jamala of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department in the Braithwait Specialist Hospital has died after having contact with a patient of Lassa Fever.

According to reports, the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology department in BMH, Woke Alexander said the victim who infected the deceased Doctor was a pregnant woman.

Alexander said Doctor Jamala like every other Doctor, was making efforts to save the life of the pregnant woman and her baby.
He said, “When the pregnant woman came in, the late Doctor Jamala had to rush to assist to take her through a possible caesarian session. He broke all protocols of payment
and other hitches just to make sure he delivers the baby for the woman.

“That department deals with body fluids. The patient never presented any sign of Lassa fever during her ante-natal. Few days after that period, the Doctor started having fever and showing other signs of malaria. We never knew it was Lassa fever until the day he started vomiting blood.

“We tested him for Lassa fever and he came out positive. We then rushed him to the Lassa Fever special centre but it was too late. By the time we got there, Dr. Jamala died.”

    RIP Doc.

I heard from the news that lassa fever claimed 35 lives in August last year in
Niger state and this was not reported. If only it was reported back then it could have been curtailed.

    May he rest in peace.

    Yeah, depending on the individual.

Not everyone infected dies, especially, if it's caught on time.

The not so funny thing about this, is that it presents like normal fever at first, and therefore, is treated as such, but unlike normal fever, the body temperature keeps rising.

Once the person starts bleeding out from the orifices, it's only a miracle that can save them.

The mother and child are probably dead too, but since the fever varies in different people, it's possible, but unlikely, that they are still alive.

This thing is worse than Ebola.
It just has to be curbed before its too late.

Y'al shld stop giving out false information

      Delete
    2. It's worse in the sense that the symptoms can be mistaken for an ordinary fever at first ,unlike Ebola that it's symptoms can manifest from as early as two days.

Ebola is more deadly, and kills faster, I know.

So a human being carrying the virus can spread it to someone else? How? We need to be educated more on this cos If this thing is as infectious as this then we've got a problem

    1. He wasn't trying to save the baby bt d mother.
      In 20cases only about 2babies gets 2survive.
So when such happens in pregnancy, the doctors focus in on the mother

  14. People have to stop eating rats with multiple mammary glands (mastoys natalensis,I think) ,even after this scare is over.

They are the carriers, and I think that continuous eating of that specie, is what causes fresh outbreaks even after previous ones have been curbed.

    1. Eating of d said rat is only about 7% in which the disease can be transmitted.

    1. Stop leaving your doors or Windows open. Look for the holes and block all possible entrance. Do not leave foodstuff lying about uncovered. Buy rather poison from pest control specialist and not rat gum.

It's funny dt most of u on here aren't enlightened.don't u guys do any other thing asides read sdk.
Lassa fever has been in nigeria from time immemorial. Most people know about bt rather display a nonchalant attitude 2wards it.
The problem is we nigerians are dirty and as far as we keep living in an unhygienic environment and keep habouring rats,d mastomys species or otherwise den I'm sorry we'd keep experiencing ds menace.
The govt should establish more lassa fever centres and please leave buhari out o this cos even during jonathans regime, nothing was done about it persay.

We need more awareness in the rural areas...they are the ones most affected and probably due to illiteracy they are ignorant about it
