Abia State Civil Service was thrown into mourning last Sunday, as one of their own took his life over unpaid salaries.
Popularly called Dee Nwankwo, 52, a staff of the Ministry of Lands and Survey, was said to have hanged himself in his sitting room while his wife and three children had left for church service in the morning.
His body dangling from the ceiling was said to have been discovered by his family members when they returned from church service in the afternoon.
According to an eye witness, the wife was said to have raised an alarm that attracted neighbours who expressed shock at the ugly development, with some saying that the deceased had taken an extreme decision of taking his own life.
A source said the father of three had left a suicide note, saying that he could no longer bear the pangs of unpaid salaries and the attendant shame of not being able to live up to his responsibilities as husband and father.
The suicide note, the source said has been given to the police while the body of the deceased was deposited at the mortuary.
The deceased, who hailed from Ihie Ndume in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state was said to have been agonizing over the difficulties he had been facing to fend for his family, including his inability to buy the wrapper his wife requested for in celebration of the Mother’s Sunday.

Oyo state government is owing its workers 5 months salary nd you want them to work..

The man is not a coward, we are not copying oyibo people.
DeleteDepression is R...E...A...L
onyebuchi ememanka, I hope you see this and stop defending rubbish as always.
DeleteGov Okezie Ikpeazu I know you have no value for human lives. You a former staunch Christian , didn't your own mother collapse and die after she saw you slaughtering a human being for rituals, after she shouted your name in disbelief and collapsed, she never recovered. Evil man! This man's blood is on your head forever
And na pdp state.
ReplyDeleteSuicide is never the way out,now who will take care of your wife and children ? They will suffer from shame, depression and no closure on your death. Mmmmmm RIP
ReplyDeleteI hope this wicked and selfish governors are happy.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile Benue state governor is planing to slash salaries while still owing local govt 7months and 5months of civil servant salaries.
It is only God that will judge this people.
Rip to the dead...
ReplyDeleteAm experiencing same difficulty here from goggle
Sad Sigh.
ReplyDeleteSuicide doesn't solve anything.
You just added fatherless status to ur kids on top d poverty they were battling.
I hope u are at peace now.
Reminds me of when my Aunt will often talk about the Proprietor of my high school. She'd say "I lived in the same street with this woman. The family was so poor that she couldn't even afford appropriate shelter. Her skirt; short, flimsy and torn in ungodly places, she'd wear to go fetch water - albeit trying to cover the much she could with the support of her hands and her pocket. I'd go over to her house and give her food and used clothes and she'd cry and feel very very thankful" But, right now, the family sponsors people in school both home and abroad. They have a school built and expanding in leaps and bounds.
ReplyDeleteDunno watchu going through but I know depression is real. I know how it feels to wake up and not feel thankful that you did. I know the feeling like you gonna lose your breath at the thought of the world unanimously closing in on you. I know the sleepless nights and the wet pillows. I know the staring into empty space thinking of nothing because you are already exhausted from thinking. But, pause and think. There's more to live for than die for. If the pressure gets too much, fall on anyone - a stranger, an enemy, a pet. Just fall. Let them have you and support you and let them do the accompanying talks and rumours they wish to do but before comforted that your pedigree is not a determinant of what you turn out to be. Stay. Fight. Win that war cos you don't want to be a successful person without a success story.
RIP to the deceased. May our Lord Jesus have mercy cos sometimes, even we do get enough like He did have enough and sent the enemy down to earth. We are trying!!!
Deep and the unflattering truth. You are so right. Thank you
DeleteDavid i pray your comment brings hope to anyone in need right now.. So true... So so true!
DeleteThis is so wrong. Suicidal mission is becoming rampant these days.
ReplyDeleteUseless and wicked governor, eating money meant for others I hope you are happy now, cursed people!
ReplyDeleteThe hardship in Abia state is something else.
ReplyDeleteThat was a wrong decision....
ReplyDeleteThat was a wrong decision....
ReplyDeleteWhere is James? I thought his ppl dont commit suicide since they r not cowards like th 'O' ppl. Bigot oshi!
ReplyDeletethere could be more to this! maybe the spouse must have ruined abuses on him for not been able to fend for the family or even denied him of something which pushed this man to this ungodly action! many lessons for us all! may his soul rest in peace
ReplyDeleteIt annoys me when supposedly educated adults do not know where to use "being"and "been".What a shame.
DeleteEven the bad road in Aba can kill a fetus via miscarriage.
ReplyDeleteI pity my people in Abia state. Nothing is working there. Their Governor is just wearing shirt with starch and be owing civil servants without remorse.
ReplyDeleteHis wife should sue the state for this, it is too bad good lawyers rarely do pro bono in Nigeria. If she was in a developed nation things would be so different. Imagine not paying workers for months even up to a year and thinking it is normal.
ReplyDeleteA lot of ppl do not know the mental toll not getting paid for months take on a person. The greatest destruction the Nigerian government is doing to its populace is not physical, it's mental. Why do you think you hear of stories of ppl killing for 10 naira? Folks are so mentally fragile by the yolk of poverty, lack of opportunities, and a government who doesn't pay salaries with any regularity they end up doing irrational things.
Hmm.. RIP to the dead.Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba, is being owned 4 months salary; while it's pensioners are owed about 16 months salary. Depression is real. Abia State Governor should do something about this. It's terrible in Abia State. Aba is something else. Come to Portharcourt road and the you wonder if Abia has a governor. Mtchew.
