Nigeria's Historical Throwback Lane -2

Take a walk down Nigeria's memory lane and see where the path might lead you....

*flash* Oh NO!..Hadiza!!!

Hadiza Lantana Oboh (1959 -  1998)

Hadiza Oboh was the first and only female commercial pilot of the defunctNigerian Airways, qualifying as a flight officer for the massive Boeing 737 as at 1984.

She was an aviation amazon who blazed the trail in the sector and was hailed far and wide as a shining star and future of the emerging Nigerian women in highly skilled, highly professional sectors.

That expectation was cut off on the 8th of February 1998 in a very gruesome way by her domestic staff.

She had returned from a trip and headed home to her highbrow 40A Bourdillion Road duplex in her white Santana, changed her uniform and headed straight into the kitchen after a brief rest.

Unknown to her, Abdulahi the gateman who had just opened the gate when she came back had quietly let in three other men with the sole purpose and intent to kill her. Among these men was Peter Eche a man she had previously hired as a gardener. He it was,who mobilized the other killers after Abdulahi had hinted the plan to him.

While she was cooking, Abdulahi and his cohorts made their way from the kitchen entrance and in a flash, attacked Hadiza, and strangled her to death with a rope after much struggles.

They went ahead in most inhumane fashion to incinerate her body in the septic tank and carefully cemented it back. Her room was looted, designer clothes and bags taken away, money and valuable possessions disposed (this was the sole purpose of the killing).

The septic tank where her body was hidden

After a while people began to inquire of her whereabouts, she had not shown up at work nor been seen in social circles for a disturbing long time, each time Peter Eche who was now occupying the house would reply..”Madam no dey, she no talk when she go come back”

Three months after her death, the police arrested Abdulahi, Peter and their Cohorts for unlawful possession, after people found out her Santana was now being used as a taxi by the group and people were affirming that they had bought property from them.

All this while no one knew where the pilot was, the case took a new turn when the police visited her house and Detective Samuel Okaula observed the uneven cementing of the septic tank and a half bag of cement near the tank, they also found the rope used in strangling her near the kitchen and stains of blood on the floor.

After an intensive manhunt Abdulahi was nabbed, the police questioned Peter who was already in their custody and he later made a full confessional statement detailing the role each member played in the murder. Her decomposing body would later be recovered from the septic tank.

By the 1st of June 1998, the police had charged all four men to court and while still waiting for advice from the public prosecutor, a high court granted two of the accused bail, with two sureties. The men granted bail vanished, and when the ministry of Justice ordered for their re-arrest it was discovered that the two sureties gave fake names and addresses.

The police is still looking for the escaped killers.

    1. I'm not in a position to judge but this is the reason you should have at least 2-3 family members living with you, especially when you are very financially okay and you live in a big house.
But some people be doing "me,my self and I"
She trusted the bastards and they killed her.

    3. Lepa you are so right. It's not good to live alone. They mastered her schedule and set her up.

This is why I often advice people who have domestic staff or use drivers, not to always follow a certain routine for too long, because they'll master it and can set you up. Try to confuse your driver and security guards by giving them false schedule sometimes. Esp your driver. We do this in my house a lot. I can just change our route without prior notice. When we are travelling long distance by road, I will never tell the driver until that very morning. I make my routine unpredictable for my domestic staff too. That way they aren't sure what I'm doing each day.

Try also not to have personal conversations in the car when u have a driver. If u must speak, do so codedly so that he cannot interpret ur conversation. The closest person to you is always your driver.. Infact he has your life in his hands. So one has to be very very careful.

For ex, When my family and I travel out of the country, we never ask the driver to pick us from the airport. when we return, We usually ask relatives to pick us so we spring a surprise on them when they just see us.

Also, do not allow your security man hold on to the key of your gate every night. Before you retire to bed for the day, lock and keep ur gate key yourself. If u can afford a cctv camera, install one at strategic parts of your house. Try to watch and playback the cctv footage at least 2ice a week to monitor any unusual activities or to see whether your domestic staff have been bringing strangers home in ur absence.

Yea I know even with all these, anything can still happen. But at least you are security conscious and will quickly know which of them to trust or fire. The advantages are more than the disadvantages.

      God keep us from harm.

Words can't describe how upset I'm just reading this.
The Nigerian Police force needs a total over-hauling but before that happens, some of us might have to become vengeful savages by taking laws into our hands. If I was in any way related to this woman, if I was related to her...

I would go on a vengeful serial killer mission, my first victim being the high court Judge who granted the murdering scums bail.
Not only would I slowly torture him to death by pulling out his foreskin with a plier and force feeding him is scrotums, I would ensure I dismember him, hang his headless and handless body on the entrance of his house with a sign hanging around his waist that reads "I set muderers free, I deserve this".
Now imagine what I would do to the actual muderers. But I'm no savage and I'm unrelated to her and the bloody cops will NEVER find those killers.
    Sad!

    1. But if it's done today now,you will start badmouthing Buhari.
Was it not within their constitutional rights to be granted bail? Someone must die first before we know that some these idiots don't need bail.
Even these politicians that has even caused the death of thousands, we protest in their favour and victimise the people that want justice meted out to them.

  25. It's my first time posting. I remember this story so well because we lived adjacent to her street on Adeyemi Lawson. Who can forget that smell when her body was removed from the soak-away pit the day it was discovered? Everyone ran to see. She had a beautiful well furnished house. The killers even left the plantain she was frying on the cooker for months, all because they were carried away with looting her properties. It was the soldier guards in the next house who alerted their boss of the suspicious movement of her staff. They would come and move things with big trucks back and forth. The world is so wicked mehhhhnnnn! RIp Hadiza......

  27. I remember, years ago my dad, a serving senior police officer worked on this case and told us his kids about it and how they found her remains in the septic tank. He said something to us then as a word of caution, " don't ever live alone in a house with domestic staff always have someone related to keep them in check". She was a victim of her domestic staff and they lived alone for months alone in the compound. Hence the audacity of the security guard to still be in the compound and telling visitors she was not in town.

  42. I remember this story well
I saw the story on newsline anchored by Frank Oliseh on NTA back then.
These evil maiguards are still in existence, there is one I read in Punch a few years back, he killed the woman (a lawyer), raped her and killed her mum too. The housegirl ran away with the new born baby through the backdoor. Meanwhile the husband was living in another state.

  43. Thank you for remembering her. If only she had not been felled by those worthless men. She deserves a monument fitting her achievement. God rest her soul.

  45. That makes 18 years today and yet her killers have not been found!...what a wicked world we live in.They must have disguised, changed names and travelled out of the country since den.But no sinner will go unpunished!

  46. Two of her killers,Bright and Patrick are in kirikiri(maximum security prison).why haven't they been executed?no governor wants to sign an execution order.by the time they have done 20 years and above now, amnesty will jump in to plea for their sentences to be reduced to life or 30years and if that is granted, these elements will be assimilated in to our society again.this is the same thing with condemned criminals in our prisons.armed robbers who ended people's lives without an iota of qualms.anini, shina Rambo and oyenusi dem were popular because they were few during their active years.they were few because armed robbers and (killers)knew they were going to be killed when caught.that is the reason why there are so many crimes today with the perpetrators not been worried about taking people's lives.they(especially armed robbers) know that once they've scaled through the police cell to court, then they are as good as free.when last did you hear of any form of execution for those on death row?God bless Nigeria.
