Police Release Press Statement On Alleged Scam Involving "Save Mayowa Fund"

On the 28th day of July 2016, the command received a report that some huge amount of money donated by public spirited people to financially support ailing Shukura Mayowa Ahmed is a scam, at the receipt of the information the Commissioner Of Police Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Owoseni directed a full scale investigation into the matter.

So far the command through its 'X SQUAD' department carried out an extensive investigation and the following are the findings:

1. That Miss Shukura Mayowa Ahmed a resident of Ebute Meta area of Lagos is critically ill and diagnosed of Ovarian Cancer.

2. That Miss Aramide Kasumu, the director of Lifestake Foundation heard about the illness and decide to use her foundation to care for MAYOWA by checking her into LAGOS UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (LUTH) Yaba, Lagos on the 25th day of july though initial deposit of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (#500,000 ) was made by Mayowa's Family

4. That Nollywood actress Toyin Aimakhu got wind of Mayowa's illness on the social Media 'instagram' and was moved to compassion having realised Mayowa is one of her fans.

5. On the 26th day of July Toyin Aimakhu visited MAYOWA on her sick bed and made a video soliciting financial assistance to support Mayowa.

6. The video went viral and there was huge donation from all over the world into Mayowa's Bank account which initially had the sum of Thirty Thousand Naira and also internet donations were done through Gofundme online account.

7. To date a total of Eighty One Million, Two Hundred and Seventy Eight Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty four Naira,Eighty one kobo (#81,278,954:81) was realised into Mayowa's Bank Account while Total sum of One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000 ) is in Gofundme Internet Account.

8. That Ahmed's Family stated that they have initial plan of taking Mayowa for treatment in Atlanta Georgia, United States America for Medical Treatment and this plan was what they communicated to both Aramide Kasumu and Toyin Aimakhu.

9. On the 28th of July the Ahmed's Family wanted to take Aramide out of the hospital and Both Toyin and Aramide demanded to know the destination, this led to crisis between the family and the other party, with both Aramide and Toyin Aimakhu realising Mayowa does not have Valid Visa to United States of America.

10. The inability of both parties to communicate appropriately led to allegations and counter allegations, With the duo of Toyin and Aramide thinking the family have no intention of seeking medical help for MAYOWA abroad and might likely divert the fund away from the purpose it's meant for.

11. The command having waded in had ensured that a genuine hospital in South Africa was contacted by the family and she will be under the care of one Dr. Naicker.

12. Flight arrangements is already concluded with mini air ambulance and medical certificate duely issued to enable her travel.

13. The lien placed on the account has been lifted to enable Mayowa access fund for her medical treatment and for every other expenses to be made.
Finally the command was not able to establish any criminal case against both Miss Toyin Aimakhu, Miss Aramide Kasumu neither do any of the Ahmed's family found culpable rather its basically an issue of communication gap and misunderstanding.

The Lagos state police command once again appreciates all "good samaritans" who had donated generously towards this course and we are using this opportunity to thank the members of the public for bearing with us throughout the period of the painstaking investigation.
In futherance to this, the account is being closely monitored to ensure all fund is channel towards its purpose.

SP DOLAPO BADMOS
POLICE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER
LAGOS STATE COMMAND.

*Everyone has been cleared and on this I am happy.....

    2. This is very good and straight forward. It's kinda good also that the crisis happened, trust me, it will enable her family use the fund for what they asked for. Imagine nothing happened, the girl may not have been granted visa so quickly. But because her case became a public issue it was easier for doctors and the embassies to grant her travel documents on time.

Sometimes there's a good thing that comes out of a bad situation. In this case it worked in Mayowa's favour.

    3. The family wanted to take her to native Medicare, allow her for and share the money, Simples! Over a hundred million, they were already having ideas

  2. 81million in her personal account and 100,000dollars in the gofundme account, thats 0ver a 100million naira made, and Leo hasnt even raised 2million. So if the actors guild can't donate, can't they even do an ad,or a video like toyin did and save Leo's life? Nollywood is a sham! They are all just a bunch of hard hearted fakers. They post pictures daily on IG,waiting on people to tell them how good they look, and not one person has taken it upon himself to make Leo's story a priority. It's really a dog eat dog world. I pray Leo lives to tell his story. It's just so sad. Stella I wish u could put Leo's story up everyday, just as a reminder, every 1k donated would go a long way. You did it for that bv that wanted us to vote for her teacher mum in the Amstel Malta competition, ure a wonderful soul Stella,u could do it for Leo.please.

  3. Why is good Samaritans in quotation marks here....I don't understand the sarcasm....Meanwhile, its clear that both Toy in Aimakhu and Aramide did the right things, as the family was really not straight with them. Yet, the same family turned around to badmouth them...May my good deeds not be turned to bad IJN. Amen.

  4. I have always believed Toyin did what she did out of kindness, They would have diverted the money if she hadn't cried out .why did they want to remove her fom hospital when she is yet to obtain even passport and her travel plans finalized . I'm glad they made all that ruckus.the family know all eyes are on them now and won't act anyhow. They should be accountable as people want to know the money is spent on her. For those joining the bandwagon to call names, you can continue even though they all did way more than you to help mayowa.
As for hospital in south Africa ? I reserve my comment as I dont know what they are capable of.

  5. From thisw writeup, it clearly shows that the family had some sorts of indecision on their part which can be specious. Both Toyin and Aramide tried their best. To me, Toyin deserves an apology from the Ahemed family. Just my opinion!

The fact that she got worried too is not bad, maybe the way they handled the scepticism and doubts was too emotional ,who is perfect in handling issues kwanu?

Even though this looks like late minute running around by the Ahmed family,i Pray this lady makes it.

  23. First destination, the USA, second, The UAE, now South Africa? Eh family, how many visas issued or intended to be?
I Honestly think that Toyin and Aramide did not act either maturely or professionally when triggering the scam alert.
However, if you implicate yourself with raising money on behalf of someone and from the purse of others, you ought to be informed of how the money will be used to serve the initial purpose of campaigning to save a life.
Therefore, they were right to be doubtful of the intention of the said family.
I sincerely hope that Mayowa will be travelling to South-Africa anytime soon and not Japan, France or Iceland.
Now that the ban has been lifted, don't delay the work on medicine further and put the blame on the scam alert in the eventuality that she does not make it. You guys were never ready and still very much undecided up to now. Come on!
I still have my reservation concerning this family. No doubt, they love their blood, but money too is the root of all evil and it can even corrupt a saint.

The blood of Jesus enter your body and save your life Mayowa.
Leo Mezzy, how far? 1,449 Euros does not increase as if people are not interested. God, please intervene in your child's life. There is no money in Nollywood, just opportunity for some, luck for others and prostitution and copophrilia and much worse for a minority. To each, his own as God be the judge.

  24. All in all Toyin fought for Mayowa.
if the alarm was not raised God know where they would have taken her to.
I mean how do you want to check a sick person out of the hospital without getting the normal travelling documents to take her where you told the whole Nigerians.
Toyin just keep up your good works ok may your light keep shining.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Reading through the comments, I see why it was so easy for someone like aramide with her sordid rep to mislead you all into believing this was a scam
And where are all of u who donated #1000 and where shouting bring back your money, how stupid do u feel now?
Toyin should stick to her local movies, that is her strength
Those of u that insulted stella when she wrote an opinion piece bout this whole issue, and accused her of beefing Linda ikeji, don't u feel ridiculous now.
Aramide u won't smell 1 kobo of that money.

  30. Thank God for Toyin Aimakhu's life. She was really God sent to this family! 81 million naira !!! You have done well Toyin. You have done very well indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the family really wanted to divert the funds. They were overwhelmed at the amount that they eventually got and were almost taking the girl out of hospital with an ulterior motive other than the main thing. From US to Abu Dhabi and now to SA, which I believe was just arranged for.
I sincerely HOPE this so-called genuine hospital can handle her case right. Dr Nackier of which hospital? But I still doubt the real intentions of this family on this girl's matter now money has entered their hands.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Shyla, I'm with you on that. The Mayowa family were amazed at the amount of money in such a very short period of time,81 million naira in 3 days. And then greed took over. They did not have good intentions for Mayowa. That was why they pushed Toyin Aimakhu away in such an ungrateful manner, after God used her to raise the money, they never expected Toyin Aimakhu would involve the police. From USA to UAE now SA. The Mayowa family did not have any good plans for Mayowa.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I believe the family would have diverted the money if not for this drama. They were already getting ideas. The money should still be monitored.

    ReplyDelete
  34. GBAM! @ Miss Truth! I second that! The family should be monitored on how they spend the money!

  35. Waohhhhhhh!!!! 81 million naira !!!! God bless Toyin Aimakhu !!!!!!

  36. Mmmmh, it's obvious the family didn't have any concrete plans and were already getting ideas when they say the gigantic sum of money Toyin Aimakhu helped them raise. US to Dubai, now it's South Africa, nah wah! Thank goodness Toyin causes drama after all.
