Federal Ministry Set To Introduce Tourism As A Subject In Senior Secondary Schools

Mrs Patricia Narai, Deputy Director, Domestic Tourism in the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, in an interview on Tuesday, at Abuja, said plans have been concluded to introduce Tourism as a subject at the senior secondary school level.

The Nigerian Educational Development Council has proposed 34 trades and identified tourism as one of the trades to be taught at the entrepreneurship level.

So students from SS 1 to SS 3 will soon start studying tourism and at that level they can come out victorious and establish a tourism business of their own. And they can also further their education on that line. What is left now is the approval.

The essence of this is to catch them young; by the time tourism is studied in all senior secondary schools across the country, it will go a long way to produce large workforce for the sector.

    1. Are you sure you know the implications, we are advocating the intensify on popularizing science now they want to add more to the level of unemployable graduate we have. Think of it if you start a small business in Abuja targeting leisure or tourist the taxes and charges will kill the business before it took off.

  4. Nigeria, my country! Of all the subjects taught, tourism is the mother of all that piqued their interest. It is well...

On the other hand, why don't they just incorporate it in an already taught subject like commerce or economics e.t.c

However, engaging students and keeping them occupied and interested in Arts, Sciences and Commerce should be the most pressing business of the day...

  5. They also need to teach customer service as a compulsory requirement too for nigerian primary & secondary school students. Nigerians grow up to become very rude & lack of manners to understand the being kind & courteous to another person doesnt mean "liking" someone!
Nigerians r among the most rude on earth & poor manners in how they treat another person.

I like the idea! And yes, customer service is an integral part of tourism which is primarily a hospitality driven field! So the kids will get taught manners! I hope the curriculum will be rich and diversified and include field trips, and also universities should capitalize on this and create a course at least or even a department for it, tourism and hospitality department, under faculty of Arts or Social Sciences.
