Rice Importation Into Nigeria Ends In 2020

Rice importation into Nigeria would end by 2020, the Policy Adviser of the John Kufuor Foundation (JKF), Hon. Abraham Dwuma, has said.

”Two years from now, Nigeria should have no business importing rice because I have travelled the length and breadth of the country and I know the potentials.

”Kebbi State alone can produce all the rice Nigeria needs; talk more of Sokoto and even Kwara. For, example, in Akwa Ibom, they have one of the best lands for rice production.

”When we came to Nigeria, farmers were doing 1.5 tonnes per hectare, now they are doing six tonnes per hectare two times in a year. We believe that with this platform, we will get there,” Dwuma said.

He, however, noted that for the value chain to be sustainable, it should be supported by business modules.

Also speaking, Secretary General of ARAP, Alhaji Abdulrauf Lawal, said the platform had made rice production easy in order to halt importation.

Lawal, who doubles as the Deputy National Vice President of Nigeria Rice Advocacy Platform, however, noted that the platform was collaborating with the state chapters of the platform to support them.

  2. Foolish man. You people will eat foreign rice and ask us to eat local.

You are not serious. Before you stop importation make sure all foreign rice in your house is thrown away

  4. I've been eating local rice for almost two years now and I prefer it to foreign rice. It's more tasty, nutritious and easy to boil.

  7. Let me echo your question Aries queen:'Can the local production sustain the populace?'

Take for example the Lake rice of Lagos state,it's production is not regular and even when it comes,it is limited and as such doesn't go around.

I do get our local rice when it is available as it is actually very healthy but truth is that demand doesn't equate supply.

They should work on that first before stopping importation totally as that usually hikes up the price of rice.
