Court Orders Police To Show Cause For Detaining Senator Dino Melaye

An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama on Thursday ordered the police to show cause over it’s continued detention of Sen. Dino Melaye.

Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, who has been in police custody since Jan. 4, approached the court for enforcement of his fundamental right.

NAN reports that Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the order after Melaye’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) informed the court that his client has been in police custody since Jan. 4 against what the law stipulated.

“We are talking about the liberty of a citizen not because he is a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but a citizen, this is contrary to sections 35 and 36 of the constitution of Nigeria. If you keep a man for 13 days, you have already presumed him guilty, ” he submitted.

Mr Simon Lough, the respondent counsel, told the court that he only got the motion on notice on Jan. 16, and needed five days according to law to reply. Lough, therefore, prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him file and serve his reply before Jan. 18.

  2. When I look at the things happening in this country, I Just feel sad and sorry for Nigerians that bought into this scam called government. It speaks of the magnitude of prevailing stupidity in Nigeria that people are in this age still being slave not to the whites but their own power drunk politicians and cannot revolt for a better system of government.

I would have loved to advice the people of Kogi what to do but seeing how they sheepishly came out to received the 'President' then, I know their case is beyond redemption.

It gets worse seeing educated ones supporting the likes of Kogi state governor who couldn't pay salaries to the poor people of the state but can spend money to prosecute Dino Melaye, then I remember that they are blacks. It makes sense. Nothing progressive is expected from blacks’ brains.

  4. It's really sad the so called elites have stopped talking about the things going on in Nigeria but during Goodluck Jonathan's goverment they talked until he was removed from the office. There's so much injustice in this country may God help and deliver us.
