FG Set To Arraign Chief Justice Of Nigeria Onnoghen And Order Him To Vacate Office

The President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government has ordered the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen to immediately vacate office.

Consequently, the government will on Monday January 14, 2019 arraign the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led-Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

He is also being accused of maintaining Domiciliary foreign currencies account which comprised Dollars Account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account which are alleged to be contrary to relevant laws, especially for public office holders.

Justice Onnoghen, whose appointment suffered delay by President Muhammadu Buhari over undisclosed issues, may be the first CJN in Nigeria to be arraigned for criminal charges by the Federal Government.

*Why not just sack him,why arraign him as well?

  1. Stella he can't be sacked just like that without a trial. If he is guilty of the crime, then a due process should be followed. No one is above the law, not even the Judges. My worries are that the government erred in this speedy arrangement to arraign him without first taken the matter to the National judicial council, a body who will investigate and interrogate the charges and then pass disciplinary measures before the arraignment.

With the hasty arraignment, you will understand that there is a purpose and an end to it. Why not concentrate on election and allow the NJC to be investigating the matter, then after election the CCB case starts. Why hurriedly trying to replace him in less than a month to an election? What impression will it give to the people? I make bold to say, this government always act in hurry and mistakes. They don't think or reason before taking action. The Attorney general of the federation should have known better how this thing work than allowed his principal being ridiculed this bad.

  2. Before anybody start whipping up sentiments here, as we are all aware, it is an offence for a public officer not to declare his or her assets before employment or promotion(pre-Buhari). He goofed and he should be arraigned. Simple! In as much as I believe this arraignment has a political undertone, he did deliberately refuse to declare his assets fully...This is Nigeria, no living Judge will jail a man like this, just like Justice Ademola and that Justice in Rivers and Enugu, he will get a pat on the wrist! Matter end.

    1. Only Stan saying it as it is. Most importantly your reference to other criminal judges like Ademola. The next thing is people ranting and posting comments here and there accusing thé FG of witch-hunting, bla bla bla. See the one above and in other posts. I mean the ones by the emotion driven guy vomiting his diarrhoea just to justify this criminal act by the highest authority of law in the country. What nonsense! These judges have made laws in the court useless. Bribe taking, etc. He should not escape this.

  3. In response to your question SDK, its because he is not 'loyal' to APC and he will not do their bidding in next months elections when some of the results are challenged in court. Afterall he has been there for a while. Why did they confirm his appointment if there were gaps in the qualification criteria. Its not strange at all for a lawyer that has been at work for as long as the Honourable CJN to have domicilliary accounts. If he didn't declare them and that was against the law, then the administration should have disqualified him at the point of confirmation and appointed the next in line by seniority at the bar and bench. This is all just because of next months elections. The wicked, that are trying to play god with the destiny of this nation shall NEVER go unpunished.
