OAU Lecturers Commence Exams Despite ASUU Strike

The Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, has commenced exams for its students despite the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The school on Monday commenced its 2017/2018 second semester exams.

ASUU had, on November 4 2018, embarked on industrial action. Since then, academic activities have been suspended in various universities.

However, some departments in OAU are carrying on with academics as they have lecturers who are not members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The lecturers said they are members of the Congress Of Nigeria University Academics, CONUA, adding that the industrial action was not binding on them.

the real issue here is that half of the departments were not taught anything because those taking the course said they were part of asuu, some of us have not even seen our lecturers at all not to talk of knowing the course contents but still the vc still insist we are going to write the exams. Yesterday, students were supposed to hold a peaceful protest but they threatened students with expulsion, before you could even enter the school, you will have to present your ID cards because newsmen were supposed to cover the protest and if you are wearing black, you won't be allowed to enter school because we were supposed to wear black for the protest, that's how the protest did not hold last last o, we don't have student union to fight for us, they have been suspended for over a year now, there is no one to defend the students, it's just like we are in a military regime here, you do any small thing to defend the injustice they do to us, and your e-portal is already blocked before you know it, or you find yourself in prison, he has done this to several people just because they fought for the wrong they do to us. Pls if you could do a separate post calling them out to stop the exams, we would really appreciate. After all, the exam regulation says we must have 75% lecture before anybody will be allowed to write exams, all of a sudden they have forgotten about this rule when some of us did not even have up to 10% lectures coupled with the fact that they didn't even release exam timetable on time, exams were supposed to start Monday, they released timetable on Friday. Na so we see am now o, it's the student now that is suffering the effect of their strike, who go help us now, nobody but journalists

  3. Hmmm, OAU that used to be citadel of Strike Actions. Our baby of the house ran back to school on the eve of Jan 1st. She told us about her exams and we initially doubted the news. She eventually wrote two papers yesterday (core courses o and not electives).
I don't know how students in the Faculty of Law will cope because most of the lecturers belong to ASUU. They only gave their students handouts to read. This is not fair to such students. People fail generally even if they go for classes. What will now happen when they are not even taught? Success to them sha.

    1. You are worried about failure?
Me I'm worried about the kind of graduates that we are churching out.
Imagine!!! Hand out to go and read.
So when they come out, what do they know? How do they engage?
No wonder you see so many graduates that are like louts.
Incapable of critical thinking and analysis.
Incapable of engagement. Zero communication skills.
So if the old ones have nothing to offer? What do these ones have to give???
