Sunday In House Gists - Living With Mental Illness...

Remember we have talked about our encounters with mad people?. Lets zero closer to home......

How about we talk about living with them? Are you living with any loved one living with mental illness?. What type of illness does this person have? Was it diagnosed by an Orthodox or Unorthodox Doctor?

How do you manage the situation?. Do you keep them in chains all day?.
Do you hide them indoors or have you shipped them off to the Village for treatment?

Are there medications for them to carry on with their daily activities or are they dangerous to themselves and those around them?

Was their illness triggered off by something or were they born like that?

What are the stigmas you or them have suffered?

    2. It is not. It is usually triggered by stress. Try and reduce or eliminate stressful conditions/ situations around you. Do something relaxing before you sleep like meditation, reading or watch a comedy. Just try not to sleep with a burden in your heart. Good luck.

  4. Will never forget the period a mad man slapped me on the street one day. After that I started having serious ear pain for over 4months. Went to different hospitals took antibiotics medication and a whole lot of Med. The pain continued. Green discharge was also coming out of the ear then. I thought I was going to run mad as I stay awake mosts nights screaming and crying 😭.... chai. Eventually I was taken to mfm. For one week deliverance. After the deliverance the pastor gave me a bottle of anointing oil to always use cotton bud with it n clean my ears daily. 2days after that the pain stopped. Thank God I didn’t run mad. If not my sis who’s a bv would have run to ds post to come n write how she has been managing and coping with my mad self.

    1. Is not genetic. You were not in love with her in the first place. A lady in my village had a mum that was mad, a guy came to marry her and one of her village uncle's secretly took this man to our town market where the ladies mum lives and roams the whole town from. After seeing the mother VERY VERY MAD, the man still went ahead to marry the lady. Is over ten years now and they are still happily married with three kids. The mum is late now. This is a true life story. @Blessed Princess

  8. She wasn't a family member though but my french teacher in primary school. Aunty Clara was her name. She started by talking to her self and not replying greetings, then she started flogging students unecessararily. Somehow she was a family friend and before it turned to full fledged madness, she told my mom that her mother was evil and tormenting her and that snakes usually attack her in her dreams and her mother confronted her openly and told her she will make sure she never gets married till she joins her cult. Been ages we heard from her last but from what I can still remember, she left the school when it was obvious she wasn't anyway normal. Anytime I sighted her at a far distance then, I usually ran away.

Aunty Clara, I hope you got better.

  9. We had one in my family, but she's late now.

We didn't realise she had dry fasting for 40days without guidance, that was how the whole crazy episode started.

It was not funny then, the situation threw everyone in a state of confusion. She was diagnosed by an orthodox and was having proper medication before she went to be with the Lord.

This is a sad memory mehnn.

One woman in my church (TTC) confessed to doing 7 days dry, on instruction from one pastor. Yet... she still never born till today. Everyday i thank God she is still alive to tell the story cos I dont even know how she survived it.

  16. This is the story of my family.
More than 20 years ago, my over zealous and very spiritual brother followed some group of people to missions/evangelism in a remote village, in a State far away from home.
My mom did everything to persuade him, but the Pastor has charged them up and there was no turning back.
The evening after they were back, he was very quiet and wouldn't even talk about their mission or experiences.
That night, suddenly, he started screaming, calling names and within minutes, he became violent, trying to remove his clothes, but his phone against the wall, etc.
It was all a shock. My mom and sibling and I all started crying and praying.
Everyone in the compound were running away.
Like a joke, that became the beginning of our night mere and the thwarting of a bright future.
My very loving, very intelligent (use to teach his younger siblings Chemistry, Maths and Physic), very gentle and crazy lover of God and the work of God, who never indulged in smoking, drinking or even having girlfriends, was whisked away into a physchiatric home.
From that time till date, the visit to psychiatric home didn't end. We were financially constrained many times in these years, that there were years we couldn't afford to buy his drugs; then within a year or 2, it will start again and we will start running helter skelter.
He has stripped, and done many other things, but thank God we all are alive.
Though my father passed on few years later, and the whole burden fell on my mother till date. (She is d one that takes him to the physchiatric home and even when admitted, she is the one that stays with him).
From that day, we have suffered shame and mockery from neighbours, families and even church members. We became talk of the town and people were advised not to marry from a mad family cos it runs in the blood.
My mum just yeaternight said loudly that enough is enough and she will no longer be termed the mother of a mad son.
Till date, we don't know what happened in that village and why it was only my brother that ran mad (He was the youngest amongst them). Even the Pastor never visited or called him for counselling or anything. We were left to bear our pain and shame. We all eventually left the church because of side talk and gossip of us.
Eveyone has moved on in the family, except him. Just when we think it's over, another episode relapses.
We have gone to various prayer houses ànd we have decided to put him permanenently on meds.
The good thing is, it comes and goes for him. He can stay 2 years without an issue then suddenly one day it will start. And once he is rushed down to the psychiatric home, after 2 weeks, he becomes ok. But experiences side effects which takes almost a year for him to be perfect again.
But we have said this is the end in Jesus name.
He is fine now. He is almost 40 years and is planning to write WAEC later in the year and write Jamb too. We believe God has completely healed him and he will fulfil his purpose.
This has made him to be withdrawn. And he avoids people a whole lot. It has reduced his self confidence to zero. He tends to feel inferior before his mates and people generally. (His mates are mostly married and doing very well, while he is leaving with my mom, who feeds and clothes him. Save for last year). We always encourage him and make him understand he can still fulfil his dreams.
I trust God he will become all that God has in store for him and He will restore him.
Over the years, we no more care about what people say. We are more focus on how to make our brother's life productive.
He is perfect now. Planning to go to school and looking for Job.
Stella, all is well. And I know his story will end well.

    9. Those years in Nigeria, there was this particular family that lived opposite us.

They lived alone without any tenant, it was later we got to know why they didn't need outsiders in their compound.

They have 4 beautiful ladies with a boy. All the 4 ladies lived overseas, mainly USA with their husbands. The last in the family being a boy was living with their dad and mom in Nigeria.

They were all doing fine, being that the father was a retired Principal and mom a retired headmistress, those years.

The children were all wonderfully doing well overseas, 2 were medical doctors, 1 was a teacher and the other a nurse.
The last baby of the family, was in the University then.

One hot afternoon, I was playing with my mates outside the compound, when we noticed a woman carrying a heavy bag on her head entering this family's compound, we were all surprised cos they hardly received visitors, (where we lived was a reserved area, you could even hear sound of a fallen pin, it was a very quiet place), the next thing, we heard a loud noise bammm the occupants of that building were screaming and at the same time crying out loud, calling the name of the woman who just entered their compound; asking her when did she arrive Nigeria from America. Woooòw it was a sorry sight cos the old man and his wife had to run outside crying for help cos their sick daughter who just arrived had started displaying fully, destroying things within her reach.

I and my playmates ran inside our various compounds to call our parents. Lo & behold the lady was actually mad. With the help of some others she was bundled off immediately to the hospital. I never saw her again until 6months later.

Within a space of 1year, the second daughter who was practising medicine in USA also came back, the same way the first came back. Although I didn't witness her return, but I got to see her from time to time when she would come outside to greet and laugh at invisible beings. She too was bundled to the hospital.

But the truth was, they never recovered fully until we left Nigeria.

We got to hear that it runs in their family. The third daughter was unable to escape from the States, she too was mentally deranged. She was handled properly in the States.

The fourth daughter was perfectly Okay, she was even taking care of the 3rd daughter in the States when her husband started misbehaving cos of her condition.

We also got to hear that their dad couldn't bear the pains of all that was happening around him, he passed, as soon as he got a call concerning the condition of his 3rd daughter in America.

Till today I couldn't tell how those 2 beautiful ladies escaped their host countries to Nigeria in that condition. How possible could that be?

Some things are deeply rooted in the family.

I wish i didn't remember these incidents. It was so sad.

I pray they all find help they seek.

He is done with his computer training.
He is a graphic designer now and an artist.

He has been set up to run this, but Patronage is almost non-existence.
We trust God he gets a job base on d afore mentioned or any other place. So he can pay his own bills and plan his own future and even have his own family.
(Since he is now perfectly normal)
The purpose of writing this is to let people know the pains and trauma the victims and their family go through.
They crave for acceptance and love, care and attention.
      Not discrimination, stigmatation and ridicule.
My brother is fine now and I believe this year is his year of restoration of all he has lost.
It has started last year and I believe God is on his case now till forever.

Religion like everything in life is to be taken in moderation. The thing about it is that many people who are mad on religion think they are perfectly normal.

Don't be discouraged by the look of the place. It is run by arguably the #1 neuropsychiatrist in Rivers State and one of the top in Nigeria. Do not lose hope. There is nothing new under the sun. Do not allow depression and anxiety and other mental challenges rid you of your joy and peace. It is God that has given medical professionals wisdom on how to get solutions. Many people will have you believe it's either or but it isn't necessarily so. It can be both. You can pray while treating the problem. It does not make you less of a Christian. It is hard not to lose it from time to time in this world of today talk less of Nigeria

  17. I have a friend who has it but I never knew until she opened up up to me concerning her fears for the future.

I actually noticed she is always slow in doing things but intelligent.

I am someone who sees positivity in every situation and it triggered her opening up to me and I now understood why she is always slow, its due to the drugs she takes ,it makes her sleepy and inactive for days and she looses memory too and it takes time to recover back.

She actually feared about marriage then that would anyone ever accept her with this condition?

I encouraged her as usual and kept reassuring her with the scriptures and for her to have a positive mind and keep trusting God.

Today she is happily married with a kid and her hubby is very supportive because he knew what he was going into.

Till date she is grateful for the encouragement and moral support I gave to herbut all glory belongs to God.

She said she is always scared to visit d woman and she was more scared when her husband suggested they should go visit the woman with their first baby girl. The boy traveled to India after some years, Nigerian over there brought him back with madness, no one knew what transpired there that would warrant the illness. We were living in the mercy of God because the boy was extremely violent.

God made a way for me and i left the compound.

  21. Wow! Wow! Sincerely, its not easy to live with those who have mental illness or have it,its draining, takes your time,if you aren't around the person, neighbours will be calling you or is it the stigmatizaion one faces around like a walking corpse. People may not want to associate with the children or it will be as if the person is not being cared for if its an on and off thing.
If its an admission thing, you spend money from buying of things needed for admission and lots more and even our country isn't helping matters because if you admit them in pshychiatric hospitals, the person will have triple dose of the mental illness because the its not environment friendly.
What of the drugs and injection? The person has to be monitored to use their drugs and it has side effects too like stomach bloating, moving of lips unconsciously, weakness of the body, slow movement, over sleeping. Those with mental illness don't sleep well, eat well, always sad and Moody and sometimes they think they are always right whereas they are wrong and if you try to correct them, they see you as an enemy.
I observe that mental illness can be curbed a little if the person has people around that are lively, engage in some activities, being able to speak out on your fears. Loneliness can cause a relapse but above all being prayerful and taking of drugs helps a lot.
I pray God touches those with mental illness and heal them permanently.
My advice is that don't make jest of those that are battling with the illness because if you are still alive and not dead, you don't know how your life too will end.........

  23. My mum's younger brother was in Form 5 (SS 2 now. Then secondary school was 5years.) when he first experienced mental illness. From what my mum said, he came back from school one day and he passed out. When he woke up he stripped himself and ran out of the room shouting. This is the beginning of his mental illness (epilepsy). He is 57 years old now and he's been epileptic for 30years now. Severally he burnt down his parents (my grandparents) house. He's been on medication for 30years and it seems there's no end in sight. He was the brightest in his class then. Some of his mates do visit him and he can't even remember them. Most times he can't remember even his siblings. Just recently he woke up in the morning to and began looking for his parents. it was then he was told that his parents died 19 & 18years ago.. It is pathetic to see my uncle in a mental state with no hope of healing in sight. He is not under chain but receiving orthodox treatment for 30years. It seems medication hasn't even helped cos he always have an attack. TR

  24. Hmmmm, I can go on and on with mental illness because I have seen a lot of people dealing with it. To some it is genetic and others situation that was not quickly checked then escalated to mental illness. Presently I have an aunt going through it and you won't know because she is taking her medication. Hers was due to a useless husband and a stupid church. She was in UK before she was deported last year. Like someone said in one of the comments you will only notice she is slow in doing things and talking because of the medication she is on. I have a school friend who is also bipolar. I pray for them always. If only we can stop the stigmatization a lot of people will come and confess of having one mental illness or the other. Anxiety disorder is subtle that a lot of people don't see it as a mental illness but hey it is.

  26. Quite an interesting topic to debate on. However, going through the comments made me realize that a whole lot of awareness needs to be done on mental health and mental illness. Myths and misconceptions are being promugated here. Because of the work I do, I have come in contact with a lot of people battling mental illness of varying degrees and each bears theirs differently. Don't bunch them up as 'madness'. With the right medications and therapy, these people live very full lives and some resolve after a while. And yes, some lose their lives just like any other illness.

For example, most people with bipolar disorder go on to do wonders because of the positive gains of the illness. Your A list musicians, composers have bipolar disorder. And only very few of these ailments are genetic.Do we also run away from people who are diabetic, hypertension or even with afamily history? We all get sick and go to the hospital and get meds if need be and sometinmes these end up being life long ailments. How is this different from mental illness?

Instead of stigmatizing, encourage the person or family member to seek help and this can even be done anonymously now and there is a lot of literature on this. There is a big push to create awareness on mental illness and as much as possible take the focus away from psychiatrist hospitals to a community oriented approach. This is all to reduce stigmatization.

There is a tendency to create myths and speculations around what we don't understand. The movie industry adds fuel to the fire by painting an untrue picture of mental illness. I have gone out of my way to watch these movies and it just breaks my heart.

The true definition of health is the complete state of physical, mental and social well being. In as much as we do yearly physical checks, get you mental health checked too.

This is my first comment on this blog and I am open to questions.

I hope there are no errors and all.

    3. This is my first comment on this blog as well and I must say you saved me some typing today. I am also a MH practitioner and quite invested in creating awareness especially in Nigeria. Are you interested in rubbing minds?; it is not often I see such an enlightened comment regarding this topic. I also understand if you would rather be incognito, as it seems we have both been all this while on the blog. Thanks.

  27. Rip to my uncle. He was schizophrenic, he was diagnosed at psychiatric hospital in uselu. His own comes and goes, he can be normal for 3years with no episodes. I don’t know his whole story because it started when I was still in elementary school. Before his own episode starts he will be extremely quiet. He won’t eat for days and he won’t sleep. He will keep singing all through the night. His voice will be cracked. He can stare at one place for hours without blinking. We use to be very helpful and understanding to him a lot. Things such as alcohol can trigger his own, if he put liquor in his mouth just give him a few days it will start, and won’t stop for like a period of 8months to a year. When he’s normal we usually talk to him about it, he knows that he’s got mental issues. I miss him a lot, he’s the most loving and caring uncle I’ve ever had. It’s difficult to live with someone with mental illness I won’t lie, having to chain my uncle and lock him in a room by himself is very traumatizing. The chains make him so angry and violent. His legs and hands would be bleeding out because he doesn’t want them. He would cry, curse and say a lot of weird things from when he was young and my mom would always say the things he’s speaking of is real and they happened. My neighbors used to laugh at us when his episode starts. They’ll be avoiding us. My uncle was super caring, if anyone is going through anything he’ll cry with them. He helped me pass through depression when I couldn’t get into school on time. He always check up on me and my siblings. I miss you uncle!!! 😢 when he’s normal he’ll ask us to give him the price of things he destroyed in the house while he was sick so he can start paying back. Those medications are live savers they help control the situation very well, they’re just expensive. If anyone has a family member going through it, please take them to psychiatric hospitals please, praying and fasting is not it. They need medications!

I don't know how I came back to this post again..something told me I needed to read some real life encounters.

It's well with all the families who have persons with mental illness. I can't start imagining the stress of looking after them plus stigmatization.
      God's special healing on y'all.

  28. I was married to someone with mental illness. I didn't know he was mentally ill. It was horrible. I can remember when I was lying down he lit a match and threw it on me. It was early in the morning. I screamed and all he did was to laugh. That laugh was so haunting . I was scared. Then I didn't know until his teenage cousin that stays with his mom told me that he was mad and always talked to himself. She said she thought I knew.I dated this guy for 3 years and I never saw any sign. Immediately we got married he started threatening me that he will kill me. Then I didn't know. I stayed with him until the revelation. It was when he hit my stomach when I was pregnant that I ran away. He wasn't a bad person but I couldn't take any chances. The night he hit me he insulted me from 9 pm to 2 am non stop. The day before I told him I would be attending a wedding in my hometown. He agreed that I could go. When it was time for me to go he started shouting who told me that I could go I said you agreed to my going. From there he hit my stomach. and pushed me out of the house naked. He left the door open and I went in. I was scared for my life. He talked non-stop. It is when I left that is when I found out that there is madness from his mother's side. His mother's 2 senior brothers are mad. One of his mom's brother got mad and died. Even my brother in law is mad. His mother's sister's son is mad. His mother's elder brother's son is also mad. His mother's female cousin got mad and died.Living with someone with mental illness is terrible. It hurts me because my ex-husband was gentle and loving. But his illness was unpredictable. Now I have a son. A beautiful baby boy. I have been fasting and praying that it won't affect him. I feel bad that I brought him into this. My mom is confident that nothing will happen to her grandson. To think people knew he is mentally ill and never told me is so painful. I wonder how they sleep at night. But I take solace in my beautiful son. Mental illness is no joke. There is no 2 ways about it. Once you know someone has mental illness please run. And if you know a friend or family member is about to get married to someone that is unstable please tell him/her. You might be saving someone. I am under torture now because I am worried about my son. It is not easy. I hope no one deals with this pain I am dealing with. I later found out that my ex-husband was normal when he was younger but he had a serious accident about 5 years. Since then he hasn't been the same. I love him but I am not ready to die. What if I stayed and he went berserk and harmed our son?! I can't take any chances.

    1. Madam, why didn't you arrange for your ex to visit the hospital. Mental sickness can be managed if diagnosed on time. You should have looked for a solution after leaving the house. Your child will be fine. Make sure you take him for mental check ups regularly when he is of age.

    5. Many families will not tell the prospective spouse because they are happy that someone will come and take the burden off their hands. Also how many of us ask our intended if there is a history of mental health problems in their bloodline or if their intended had ever been treated for a mental illness. Most ppl shy away from hard questions because romance is sweet and they do not want to rock the boat.

As women we also need to be very observant. If a family is pushing for a real quick wedding it may not be because they love you so much and desperate to have you join the family.

    6. My dear, your story is very touching. Please pay very good attention to what I'm saying now. You cannot be praying and fasting about your sons health and at the same time you're worrying! Choose one and stick with the one you've chosen. God is more than able to break the chains of mental health. Have faith. God bless you and your son.

  29. My dad has dementia bless his heart.. love him to pieces.. he's violent and breaks things sometimes, other times he hides all his things.. He constantly believes there is a conspiracy against him..
A time I would never forget was the day he was crying uncontrollably that a plane just crashed and he's seeing dead bodies everywhere apparently he was in the crash sight it was all so vivid to him..
    He also sees "spirits"..
It's generally draining and requires a whole lot of patience for loved ones and care givers.
Note that to the mentally unstable the world they see is so real, don't try to argue they are seeing things.. Just comfort them and talk them through whatever.
I also know of a distant relative that went bonkers immediately after law school.. too much book or her village people?
Well if you have family that have mental illness Consult a doctor and always pray for the peace that passes all understanding that only JESUS can give to them.

  30. I had a neighbor then in Yaba who had mental illness. I don’t know if it was schizophrenia or what but she used to talk to herself, never sleeps and hardly slept...her mum said she had a relationship that went sour and from there it got worse. If she takes her meds she was better if not she would be all over the place talking, restless and all sorts.. One day I even saw abike dabiri.s picture in her old secondary school collection. She will say stuff like Jesus Christ was beheaded etc. her mum who slept in the same room with her died in her sleep and she went about her business unbothered till late afternoon of the next day...when I moved out of that area I heard she had started going out to the street in her underwear. I think about her sometimes and always pray she is well now...

  31. My coworker was fifty four years old. She had a daughter who was twenty nine. She was never married. She went to the dealership to buy a truck. After all said and done, she fell for the salesman. They started to date. In three months, she told me she was getting married. I asked her where she met this man she was getting to so quickly. She just laughed. I didn’t know then she met him at the dealership. Anyway, they got married and my coworker always seemed stressed out. She was very quiet and private. Never said much. After barely a year into the marriage, my coworker filed for divorce. She found out dude was crazy as in coo coo crazy. He was at the house and it was getting late do she asked him to leave. He had moved out already but went there that day so they could do yard or garage sales then he will use the money to pay his hotel bills. Dude axed her to death. Her daughter was feeding the horses outside and he went and axed her too. They both died. Dude was arrested and it was during one of his hearings in court we knew he had a history of mental illness. He was on meds and stopped taking them after he met my coworker. He was sentenced to forty years for both women. At least he will not harm no one else.

  33. I have posted about my brother whose mental illness started in medical school. After over 10 years of sleeping in churches and spiritual houses (please note that this only made him worse and more secluded from the real world), he started treatment at Yaba Left, he is okay now but extremely antisocial.

He has to take drugs everyday and injections every month, which makes him add weight,to be slow and to isolate himself, we recently gave him a smart phone which has been occupying him.

It is draining and heartbreaking to watch a loved one go through this and he used to get extremely violent before we started treatment, everyone in the house lived in fear and most of us and those we called to help got injured at some point or the other.

Please, if you notice anything unusual in yourself or a loved one, seek psychiatric help immediately, you will save everybody involved a whole lot of trouble, you can be praying while getting treatment.

My sister didnt tell her husband, he wasn't happy when he found out but he was far away so he wasn't a threat to them, I don't know if to tell my future husband beforehand or not, I really don't think it wwill make difference. I know my God will make his latter years greater than his former, that's one of our major prayer points as a family and He has never disappointed us.

    2. Please, don't keep such an important information from your future husband. Nothing will stop someone that loves and wants to marry you. My sister passed in a psychiatric hospital. I told my husband, boyfriend then. He sympathised with me.. If a man walks away for such a reason, please, let him go. He doesn't deserve you. In fact, he won't be supportive if you have any serious challenge.

  34. I heard that a young cousin of mine, about 22 or so is now suffering from mental illness. He is apparently violent and the mother is afraid for her life at times. Life is a strange experience because you never see what is around the next corner. I knew that kid as a child and he was perfectly healthy. I raise hands to mothers because they have their children with no knowledge of what they will get, and still take care of them even in the worst.

  35. Most of these insanity could have been managed if the victims had people who took them to physchiatric homes or regularly buy their meds and ensure they take them.
The help we can render to these people is to try get close enough to either their families or themselves and encourage them to keep their appointments at the physchiatric homes or even pay for their meds.
Most of these victims relapse due to depression.
They are often depressed. for this has set them back in life and most people tend to stay away from them or avoid them completely.
The society makes them feel they carry a plague that is contagious or an evil spirit that can be contacted/transferred in close contact.
Try help people around you at the early stage before it runs out of hand.
Any sudden episode might mean they have stopped taking their meds or something very bad happened to them suddenly. If you can help them get to the physchiatric home at such time, they will be fine. And when they are back, they usually feel withdrawn and shy. You have to make an effort to make them come out of their shells and blend again.
Recovery usually takes awhile. But to prevent reoccurring, make sure they are in meds.
Many families of these people can't afford their continous medical bills. You can help in this way.
    Show them love and care.
    Don't discriminate.
