Viral Video Of Customs Officer Who Fatally Shoots Unarmed Nigerian Man Over N5000 Brouhaha

A Viral video released on the Internet On Sunday February 17th shows an official of the Nigerian Customs Service fatally shooting a man along the Sagamu Interchange, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The Viral video shows a woman screaming at the top of her voice, accusing a Customs officer of killing the man because of N5,000.

The customs released a statement shortly after saying the deceased was hit by a stray bullet....The report totally contradicts what is seen in the video!!!

CUSTOMS PRESS STATEMENT

“The attention of Nigeria Customs Service has been drawn to a disturbing video going viral with conflicting narratives,” Mr Attah said in a statement.

“While it is painful and totally unnecessary to lose life in anti-smuggling operations, today at Shagamu interchange along Ijebu Ode, attempt to obstruct lawful performance of duty by passengers of a commercial bus (a white Toyota Hiace) suspected to be carrying bales of used clothing led to the death of a young man (Godwin) and serious injury of a Customs Officer, ASC1, Destiny Onebamho.

“Contrary to some narratives, the young man was not a passenger of the bus but a good citizen who always come to fetch water for Customs Patrol men anytime they return to the base.

“Preliminary finding indicate that it was during the skirmishes and struggle to disarm the officer that the riffle discharged and hit the friend of the Customs (Godwin) who lost his life.”

Mr Attah said the agency is already in touch with the deceased’s family.

“Sadly, it should be noted that while attention shifted to the dead and the wounded, the passengers who filmed with inciting commentaries boarded their vehicle and left, leaving the wrong impression that it was one of them that was killed,” he said.

“While the wounded officer is under intensive care at the hospital, the patrol team has been recalled to the office for further investigation.”

customs officer beaten to a pulp

Watching that video made me weep for Nigeria and like i asked on Instagram............Why is a Customs Officer carrying a loaded gun around? Is there no one responsible for evaluating the mental health of those handed guns in Nigeria?..Sad,pathetic,annoying,scary and unbelievable #JusticeforGodwin

    1. I hate anything in uniform in nigeria with a passion. Reason I make sure my papers are always complete.
Just last week my mum had been ill. She had even been taking IV injection inwhich the thing was just removed so she can go and see her own doctor in luth that manages her high blood pressure. It shot up abit because she was treating typhoid just in a hospital on her street. She wasn't admitted but was taking 2 injection twice a day.
I took excuse from work that day. Her driver was to come take us. I took uber to her house. I got there and met my mum washing her car. Driver didn't show up. And my mum hardly drives.
I can't drive manual car. I said let's take uber she said NO. Luth isn't far, same surulere.
On going police stopped us and asked for my mum's license. She had left it at home as she hardly drive. All other papers were complete.
We pleaded with this ppl she's sick. We have appointment at Luth for 11. Time is already going. They said we must go to station and pay fine of 48k. I even called the Doc in their presence. My mother is 63yrs old they still insist on us going to station even as she's sick. They entered the car at this point I was angry and even started exchanging words with the rude female one.
Anyway at the end of the day after wasting about 2hrs of our time my mother gave them all the money she had on her which was just 3k. They wanted to collect mine too bastards. I just lock up. No way I will give them money I was paying for my mother's treatment. Hate police with passion.

    2. These policemen are so heartless. Gosh.... even after explaining that your mother is going to the hospital? This reminds me of when my driver was taking my wife out and police stopped them. Unfortunately, my driver forgot his license at home. They wanted to arrest and impound the vehicle because of that .... Imagine ... to cut the long story short, I had to intervene on phone and they let them go.

    5. Nigeria and their impractical laws. In Europe you are not mandated to carry your driving license on you. If you do well and good but if not.. you will be given a period within which to report with it to the nearest police station.

    6. 12.12 you read where I said my mother hardly drives. She has a driver.
It's on getting to her house I discovered driver didn't show. If not we wld have made other arrangement.
She left the house with just wallet and hospital card cos Luth isn't far from her house.

    7. Anon your DL shouldn't be left in your car. What if the car gets stolen

      Delete
    8. Anonymous 10:05 that is a big mistake people make when one's want to learn how to drive a car, they learned with automatic car when you learn how to drive with manual car you can drive both automatic and manual car. If you learn with automatic car you can never drive manual car, so i will advise you to make out time and go back to driving school and learn how to drive a car with manual car you will see the difference.

    4. @Perxian, the custom statement is a blatant lie. I have experienced it a lot on that same spot. They check your papers and fabricate that one is not there or there was a signature that was not appended, then request for 5000. We just give them and move on, even though our papers are complete, but just to avoid delay cos they can keep you there for hours. May the blood of that innocent guy haunt them for eternity.

  5. That video messed up my night as I found it difficult sleeping. A news I read somewhere said the guy killed just arrived Nigeria from oversea and heading towards East. Nigeria is becoming terrible each passing day. This is one of the reason if I talk about the blacks irredeemability, some people will think I am not patriotic.

    1. The Nigerian customs service lead by one great grandfather, Mr Ali Hamid should be ashamed of themselves!!!!! May you and your children be killed like the way Godwin was killed !!!!!!
Stella obviously, I think it is time for every Nigerian to start carrying their own guns ,so that if a customs / police or army officer kills my brother with **accidental discharge** I will also go in bring out my own gun and shot the security personnel , accidentally too !!!! I have said it time without number !!!! The day any member of my family is killed like this , I will buy a gun and track down the mother fucker and put a bullet in his head !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I saw the video on your Ig page this morning and it broke my heart, I asked the same question too😢. It's sad what our society is turning into. Just 5k and a life is gone. How much is the officers salary that such an amount could prompt him to take a life.

Their statement saddened me the more, with such an evidence they still gave such excuse, they cant even do a damage control with it, cause no sane person would accept that. Infact there is no excuse to take a life. That shooting was more intentional than an accident. I just hope that officer would pay for his crimes and it wont be swept under the carpet.🙄🙄

    1. I agree with this. the statement made it more about the wrong narrative than the actual life that was taken. like saying the deceased was a custom friend made it any more excusable. no empathy at all

  8. Oh God, not this video again! I have been running from it since after the first time I watched it.

This country has gone from bad to worse. I can't even begin to imagine what this country is like now. I don't want to think about it anymore as I get this tight knot in my stomach when I do.

And to see that some people (albeit few) are still supporting this barbaric act beats my imagination

By now, I thought the president would have given orders for the prosecution of the man that perpetrated the act. The job has been done for them already.

All the investigation they would have needed to do is already in a video they've all clearly watched

I am tired of this country. Why's it animals they normally give gun to. Is it that they trained them to be animals or that power just intoxicated???

I am tired. Woke up really upset this morning over this issue. I'm not even kidding

  16. What stray bullet? The rifle was cocked then immediately it was fired....the only confusion was I thought it was a passenger that was killed from the bus and not the customs errand boy or another official....either way this country armed forces on the road and with access to civilians need serious mental re evaluation before they are handed arms whatsoever...oh how dangerous is Nigeria now that one can be killed anyhow like flies 😢

  18. A grown man, who has a job, opened fire and took another’s life because of five thousand Naira. What kind of poverty has befallen us in this country?? These are the same fools harassing people at the airports. They want to get as little as two thousand Naira to let you carry your dry fish. Why?? They say America does not allow dry fish. When you land in America, they don’t even give a damn about the dry fish. They scan for contraband and let you go. Which way Nigeria!! Which way?? What will they tell the mother, wife or kids of that young man. What???

  22. Customs officers especially those ones on border patrol are a step lower than drunk trigger happy Nigerian policemen. Spawns of the devil and I have no intention of watching the video. It's trending on Twitter and it keeps popping up in my IG. I don't want anything to mess up my day... Too much of all these is does more harm than good to ones mind.
See the lousy, ill written, devoid of emotion nor apologies letter that a supposedly oga wrote and signed?
They never die well; men who behave like this or support such or do nothing to correct ills like this especially one done under their jurisdiction never end well. The pains caused will forever speak. Blood for blood; even the Bible spoke concerning it.

  28. Let me go anonymous on this, the custom guy was at fault, he did very very wrong, he wasn't suppose to cork his rifle, if he did he was suppose to shoot in the air or spray tear gas, I just want to advice Nigerians to be very careful with anyone handling any weapon even if it is a stone, trust Me that Custom officer will be transferred and case closed except God judges him nothing may happen to him, the guy killed can't come back to life even if the officer is killed, this country is messed up, pls your life before anything. May God console the family of the dead and judge the killer

    1. The difference is the uniform they wear. They are all armed robbers.
They robbed my friend of all he had while coming from club in the name of stop and search. Took all the money in his pocket plus glove compartment.
He had to comply as they had a gun next to him and it was in a dark lonely place at 3am.
He later even got the police ppl involved thru their name tag as his father also has police escorts and is a known person.

These boys were in NYSC gear, showed these men their nysc call up letter and they still tag them yahoo boys.
The parents had given these boys 40k each making 80k. SARS collected 70k from them and told them to proceed with their journey with 10k.
      Wicked people.
The matter was taken up and their money refunded. think the guys were dismissed,

  30. I watched both videos 15x each. In the first video you see them arguing with the man with the iphone x videoing. One of the customs man says shoot him, kill him and the gun went off. The second video shows that some of the customs men and patrol men ran away while one of the customs man tried to drive away, they collect the keys from him. Someone that fetches water for them indeed wearing combat boots and well dressed.

  31. It's disheartening how all these men imon uniform think they are gods because they carry weapons. They harass people anyhow because they have uniforms.
I didn't watch the video but I know that the customs officer intentionally killed the man because they don't have conscience, they've exchanged their conscience for the love of money. I really hope that the officer is punished for taking the life of an innocent man.

  34. While I mourn the deceased and sympathise with his family and friends, I'd like to also salute the courage and bravery of those who captured and posted the footage for all to see. That was a very risky thing to do under the circumstances. The blood-sucking demons in customs uniform could have killed them all just to cover-up. May the dead find eternal rest and may the killer face the wrath of God.
