Bank Alert SMS Scam .......

This is a stand alone post because Business owners to know what is going on now.......
There have been several reports and i think this is now serial and you need to stay Woke.....

I was informed by a BV that goods were sold this morning and money was paid into his Company account and he received alert and the buyer even showed confirmation on his phone.....

When He checked his account balance some hours later,it didnt add up and he went to the Bank and was told no money came in.....The alert he received right there in front of the buyer was fake!!!

How do they do this?does anyone know? What can be done to prevent this when selling to someone who insists they dont have cash but can pay from their account to yours?Note that the account you supposedly received alert from does not exist so you cannot even report it....

Please let us discuss this as we might be saving someone from becoming a victim tomorrow.....

    1. Some of them are actually the ones doing it or in collaboration with the scammers. In 2015, A staff of Diamondbank called me to request I click a certain link he sent to my email for confirmation of some readers digest online magazine subscription I had filled. I immediately shut him down and he started apologizing and cut the call. I sent the bank a mail with his details and the manager called to apologize and look into it. Apparently, some members of their staff are into it.

    6. My people so sorry this is coming late.i had to go do a research to know how this happens.this guys go to a web designer and they create this an app that can send messages with whatever sender they wish to use.eg mtn ,lacasera and so on.when they come to you and ask you which bank do you use ,when that info is gotten they know what the alert message of your bank looks like and all they need do is type in the agreed amount and boom you get your alert.in order to prevent this as a hv said use a diff phone number for your clients and your biz.because their mindset will always be that your alert is coming to same phone you are using for your business but then you really need to keep that line totally away from business just strictly alerts because I do believe they might go the extra mile to know which of your phones you receive alert .i just hope this helps out

  2. The phone number you use for your bank transactions should be different from that which you use to be in contact t with your customers .

If you use Airtel for chatting your customers ,
You can use your personal line to receive bank notifications

And also, check your emails too for the bank transaction notification too.

Don't rely on the SMS notification only.

    4. Great info, TPY. In addition, almost all the banks have USSD codes, obtain that of your bank and you can check balance and generate mini statements instantly without data. If you run a big business, endeavour to get a POS. It is free.

I don't use the mobile app. Bank app is the best. I don't even get mobile alerts, only email notification.

    2. I'm kinda confused here, which one is mobile app again? I downloaded the app I'm using from Google store. Kindly differentiate.

    3. hmmmm, but mobile app isn't that safe any longer. It's good to have more than one accounts. One will have mobile app while the other won't. If you want to be using mobile app for alerts, always try not to have big money inside that account. As soon as the money is getting much, transfer some to your other account in which you do not have mobile app. Also, you won't be giving that account number to people, unless few close and trusted ones.

    4. Anne K, mobile app is the one with codes and numbers for transaction e.g. 737, 894 etc.

it's not downloadable, just numbers and codes.

      Delete
    5. Mobile app abi mobile code?

      Delete
    6. @Perxian: you are wrong! The codes you are referring to are called USSD banking. The bank app you are referring to is same as mobile app.

      Delete
    7. ode, olodo.mobile app is the one u downloaded, the codes are ussd which is more risky, you do business get two accounts, keep yoir millions in one, have no ATM r transfer aloqwd ,keep like 200k in aother and haveatm for that one

  6. The alert will come in but the creditor's balance won't increase. The money won't be added to the account balance.

    Sorry to the BV.

    4. Was about to type this. This is the main thing. Some sellers are even too lazy to check. Once they hear that sms alert sound, they will just say ‘obatago’.

  7. That is the reason why each account is in charge of an account officer. Know your account officer, if someone claims that payment was made simply call the account officer who will just take a look at your account and confirm that indeed payment was made.
Moreover, for someone to make such a claim, the person must have an idea how much balance you have in your account no be so? Because for you to even agree that payment was made, you must have calculated what you had with what was paid to arrive at your current balance. So how did the customer get that info? Guard your financial details jealously, know who you give your atm cards to make withdrawal for you.
The onus lies on you to protect yourself from fraudulent minds.

  8. Stella, this happened to me last week, but my saviour is my brother who came in from no where and asked what transaction is happening here immedietaly I saw the guys panknicing cos of my brother presence and they all ran away leaving the goods they brought and the fake alert they sent to me, it seems they sense that my brother knows there plans, we need to be careful about this fake alert.

  9. Stella the rate of fraud is on the high rise as it stands now. There is also a new trend going on now that kidnappers now uses people's account to collect ransom and sometimes they buy goods using people's account for their victims family to pay in directly.

I read somewhere that they came to a man that sells cars and got a bargain for a particular car. Took his account number and some hours later 3million got to the car dealer account. They came back and told him they had a change of mind but he shouldn't worry, they told him to give them 2.5million and keep the balance of 500,000.

Happily, he withdrew and gave them with a feeling of having quick gain only to be arrested the next day for kidnapping. Now you will imagine the amount of money he will spend over that case.

People should have their account officers number to call quickly when such SMS comes or better still check their account balance using the short code system.

Check your bank app, if there was payment made, it should reflect in the app

  15. A. It's very easy fah.... Such messages can sent through a bulk SMS platform where u can easily code d sender of d message with the receivers bank code.... U can send d message to d novice without account balance reflecting.

Fraudsters also work with bankers n ex bankers to send false credit alerts (flashing) to their victims.

Many has fallen prey to this and many will still fall prey... If d later method (flashing) is used, d money will reflect in your balance for hours and later disappear.... 😂😂😂
I heard u can even spend that one d moment it reflected and later owe your bank....

On every platforms of Bulk SMS, special acronyms such as MTN, SON, UBA, FIRS etc have been flagged. you can never send bulk SMS using such acronyms as header.
like most people have said, whoever is into such fraud surely have someone on the inside fine-tuning their illicit jobs

  16. That's why it's good to have a mobile bank app, you can easily check your acct balance and in a situation where there is no network, don't allow it except for people you know very well, so as to be able to run back to them when the money doesn't enter.

  22. The phone number for my bank transactions is different from my business number as safety measure (even staff don’t know inflow) and I log in to mobile to view. I only accept cash deposit at the bank, pos or cash except it’s a customer I know. If they insist on transfer I must see the inflow first

  25. This can be done through all these bulksms websites.
It's possible because you can choose any number you'd want the receiver to see and viola, one can get an SMS alert tagged 'Zenith bank'..

The down part is it'll never tally with your account balance...

Never!!!! But only the smart and careful ones notice

  26. I now heard its a surprise gift they will bring then ask to swipe ur card on their pos that its the charges for the alcohol they brought to you and will ask for 1 k and the gift will worth 10k then after paying with your card , u start getting alerts

  27. Vendors should start using safepay. It reminds me of PayPal. Basically it's like a third party payment arrangement to safeguard transactions. The buyers pay through safepay, the sellers get confirmation of the payment but doesn't get the money till goods are delivered. So it doesn't come through alerts and all that story is avoided. Seller has to log into his safepay account to confirm the payment is there. Buyers are also safe because money isn't released till the items are released. A good way to avoid all these online shopping scams in my opinion.
