FG Declares May 29 And June 12 As Public Holidays

Nigerian Government has declared May 29 and June 12 as public holidays to mark the transition to a new government and Democracy Day respectively.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohamed, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Mohammed said that most of the activities formerly performed on May 29 as Democracy Day have been moved to June 12 and that the events slated for May 29, would be low key.

He said world leaders will only attend the June 12 events.

  1. So does it mean that Nigeria now have two democracy days?

  2. Since they have chosen June 12 to be democracy day even though there ain't anything to show how democratical Nigeria is, why not scrap off the May 29 already? Whether low key or not, it isn't necessary keeping two date for democracy celebration.

    1. Now I believe those BVs who say you talk a lot of nonsense. What will happen to the country for the days there won't be a government in place until June 12th? May 29th is just swearing in day aka handover day. Hope you understand now

    2. Teejay, this current May 29th public holiday is because of the transition. It's meant for this year only. Then, from next year, democracy day will be marked on June 12th.

    3. Anon 09:20 ordinarily I wouldn't have responded to you but let me educate you a bit, for I know education doesn't guaranteed intelligence which you have just shown. You may be educated but lack intelligence and cognitive thinking or reasoning. Hope you aren't surprise or doubt the possibility of that?

Now listen, go back and read again where the minister said most of the activities usually done on May 29 will be shifted to June 12 but again there will still be low key celebration that same 29th of May. Now ask yourself, what are the two celebrations for, since they are for the same purposes? Won't it be better the 29th May remains the official inauguration and June 12th just declared as an holiday or better still everything done on June 12th since it has been called democracy day? Hope you understand better now?

    4. Madam Estateowner did you jump the part he said May 29th will be low key and most of its activities have been moved to June 12? By implication both days are to be celebrated with democracy occasions this year. Maybe you should read again.

  9. I don't see the reason of having 2 democracy day. Is either they go with 29th May or 12th June.

  10. Who cares.. They should make the whole year democracy day. Let me start making plans against the pub holiday

  11. They should have just given the June 12, another name. Nigeria didn't become a democracy on June 12th but May 29. Why are they trying to turn history upside down?

    1. God bless you for that. June 12 should have been celebrated as an holiday and commemoration of MKO Abiola and not necessary democracy day. Was it actually June 12, 1993 Nigeria got into democratic rule or May 29, 1999? Now I see why Nigeria is the way it is today.

  12. As long as there's public holiday, we cool with it this year.

  13. When the govt has no plans to improve the state of affairs they implement a new holiday to make the masses happy. Who cares about holidays, fix the hospitals, roads, schools, electricity and water supply. Look for job creation opportunities and stop these distraction techniques with creating new holidays every month.
