Polytechnic Management Destroys Over 1,000 Phones Seized To Curb Examination Malpractice

The Management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan on Wednesday destroyed over one thousand mobile telephones worth over fifteen million naira (N15 million).

It was gathered that the mobile phones were seized from students during various examinations conducted in the institution in the last one year. The phones were seized and subsequently burnt in order to reduce examination malpractices through the use of information and communication technology.

The burning of the items was supervised by a senior lecturer and the immediate past Deputy Rector of the Institution, Mr. Bayo Oyeleke.

Oyeleke, in his address, stated that the school authority usually warned students against taking mobile telephones to examination halls, but it was surprised that some students do not yield to the warning.

He said, “However, some students still go into the exam hall with their mobile phones which is against the rules and regulations of the institution.”

Oyeleke insisted that the action of burning the mobile telephones after they were seized was carried out in order to serve as deterrent to students of the institution who wish to further indulge in the illegal and inappropriate act.

    1. Sweetie, thats not madness.
Its eradicating the madness in Nigerian youths.
Bringing a phone to an exam hall is the madness

  3. Dumb lecturers. What are they teaching the students? Wastage? Why not reset all the phones and auction it? Generating environmental waste. Those phones are not meant to be burnt as they release toxic fumes to the environment. Did they conduct an EIA before doing that rubbish?

    1. Annon 15:46, apparently you a bit delutional! Which test are you asking them to conduct? Selling or autioni ng will encourage all sorts of vices. Burning them is a good lesson for our lazy youths... Despite all the warnings .. pls let us be realistic and stop judging from the high table.

    2. Actually burning of phones is bad. Did you ever check the battery where it is written "dont throw in fire". I know they want to send a message but i hope that phones where broken, sorted properly before burning.

    3. Anon 16:50, when things are beyond your understanding, you just keep quiet.
Burning those phones is not environment friendly. There is a potential for explosion, release of toxic gaseous fumes, degradation of the soil insitu, (nearby) surface water contamination, etc... I can go on and on.
They should have auctioned them off with police approval.

    4. Anon 16:50 Typical Nigerian!! Disgustingly ignorant. Yes, an EIA should be conducted to determine the effect of such practices on our environment.
Why do you think phone manufacturers ask you to return phones and add money to get a new one?? Why do you think your pictures in Nigeria look different when compared to pictures abroad? You think its 'Buhari' causing it. Msschheew!!! Too many daft people roaming the internet and giving opinions.

  4. Why not aution the phones and use the money to help student struggling to pay their school fees since the government don't help out.Burning those phones is a waste.

  5. Good moves. Internet enabled phones in the hands of teenagers/some early tweens are a terror.
If your school age daughter/son has a phone AND SHE WASN'T BROUGHT UP DISCIPLINED seize it. If you want peace.

  6. The school authorities, lecturers and students are all mad. Why not reset it and resell it at a give away price instead of burning it. They all need to be schooled.

  7. Naija and treating grown ups like kids. That same man will forget his phone on him and it will be kept and returned in s civilized nation
If that many students are forgetting it means you’re not reminding them when they come into the hall with the phone. You’re just rushing to seize
Normal practice is to remind all before they better to drop their phones in a bin and pick up after and before exam starts say check your pockets and drop
    What’s hard there

    1. Despite repeated warnings before you enter the exam Hall, they tried to hide it. People will always talk anyways! Like someone rightly said, it is only when other people sin that even sinners will be acting like saints... Hypocrisy and hypocrites everywhere!

  10. that's not sensible ooo. selling at a cheaper price and using the money to develop the school wouldn't have been bad. What ever happened to giving me the money now?

  13. This is the most embarrassing news I've heard in a long time. I'm not surprised it's coming from Ibadan. We are very wasteful in this country. What happened to asking the students to pay a fine commensurate with the cost of the phone to get their phones back? So now, we have lost 15million, plus another 15millio. I'll cost them to buy another phone, caused environmental pollution and wasted fuel. Who did this to us?

  15. This is madness. They have no right to destroy someone's property. Return the phone after the exam. Its just annoying seeing supposedly legal and coporate institutions breaking the law. Just madness

  16. They should have asked them to pay huge sums of money to recover their phones rather than burning the phones.
The school would have made some cool bucks sef.
Imagine telling students to recover their phones with as much as 30k or even 50k, that doesnt mean the punishment metted out to those who were caught in the act wont be done. I tire sef for them.

May be when caught cheating you face the punishment and to recieve your phone a said amount.

  17. Nigerians just love to criticize everything that the Govt or it's institutions does. There is so much rot in the system and every single move to cub this, should be applauded not criticized. The schools are one of the places were the rot in Nigerian system started from. Knowing Nigeria for what it is, selling those phones will create more problems than imagined.

  18. This is not good. They should have returned the phones to the owners. Think about the data that was contained in the phone. Simply make them fill malpractice form, fine them before returning the phones and make them resit the exams etc will do the job, curb malpractice and serve as a deterrent to others. By the time you see your course mates moving on while you are still batting with resits, you will jejely study harder, write what you know and move on.

  21. 3rd world country tueh!!
Africans especially Nigerians are so crude and brutish. I can’t stan biko. Pouring fuel on phones? So lame. Why don’t pay a fee or outright resetting the phone and reselling?
A citadel of knowledge did this? What an irony! ‘M so pissed!!

  22. It's not possible for them to resell and donate the proceeds because of the implications. I Do not really support burning of the phones but I can tell you that the least punishment for examination malpractice is 2 years suspension. I would bet that the students signed a waiver before the phones were burnt because truthfully, this is better than suspension or even expulsion. If truly the authority's intention is to deter students from the practice then I think they did a good one ...
