Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative.....

Hmmmmmmm....

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
MAKING A MOVE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION:

Dear Stella,

Good evening.

I am an ardent reader of your blog and comment sometimes under anonymous. Thank you for impacting and changing lives.
Please I need your advice and that of the good blog followers.

To my story/ chronicle.

I have been working as a contract staff of one of the Nigerian banks for almost 12 years now and the truth is that there is no hope or any future for me there. My take home monthly is below 100k and there is no other benefits, no promotion, same thing, same position for 12years. Even if I stay there for 20 years more, it won’t make any difference.

The truth is that I am tired of everything about the work, the way contract staff are treated and looked down up on in this bank is nothing to write home about. I cry most nights asking myself why did I start this in the first place.

I am a University graduate with 2:1, plus some certifications I have acquired as well. Stella, I am an intelligent lady, not bragging. I deserve better than what am doing now. It’s so heartbreaking to see someone that just graduated being your boss because he/she came in as an Executive Trainee- someone you teach the job.

I have searched and searched and still searching for Job in other organizations but to no avail. To say the least Stella, I am tired and frustrated.
I do not wish my enemy to experience what I have been through these long years in this place.

I have made up my mind to resign by January because I do not want to continue like this in 2020. I want to enroll in fashion school for a 6months training after which I will see what I can do for myself.

I need your advice and that of blog visitors if this is a step in the right direction or if there are other ideas they can offer, I am open to welcome them.

I will be in the comment section to read.

Thank you Stella and please keep me anonymous.

    1. I took ds step 2weeks ago and I'm starting my fashion school on Monday. I know it's not going to be easy but God is on my side. Fashion Schools re expensive o. I'm asked to pay 300k for 6 months. It is well with me.

    2. My story is similar. Worked in one of the oil companies for many years. I had all the necessary qualifications and even more to become a permanent staff but the situation only became worse as attaining that was only based on who you knew.
Everytime I approached that office, I would just have this horrible migraine. I knew that I didn't belong there. Asides from that, I wasn't growing as a professional. This made me really unhappy at my job.

I resigned and left the country. This was the best decision that I made. I got into the real estate market over there and I'm making it. I just recently concluded my professional exams here and soon, I will be working.
I'm not where I want to be but I'm definitely close. I see myself making great strides towards my goals and there's nothing more satisfying.

It's been tough and I have cried many times but things have definitely improved. I almost threw in the towel but something in me kept pushing and here I am.

Please take that walk but you must do the work. It may get rough, don't give up and God will see you through. Goodluck.

    3. just go for the fashion school because even in other companies the stories are alike, u have a masters degree from Nigeria just for someone who had his or hers from outside the country be placed above u and it is not as if these jobs even let one have time for ones self, u leave early and get home late

  2. Truth is it’s best you resign, you’ve been a contract staff for too long and knowing the Banking industry one day they’d ask you to leave.
It’s best you leave honorably while you still can and either look for a better job or just start something on your own like you said you want to go to a fashion school.

Also, I don’t know your Bank but I know there are usually opportunities for contract staff to convert to full time staff. Perhaps, you didn’t meet the required criteria. Anyway, keep your head up and do not despair. All will be well.

    3. I was also a contract staff in a bank. I resigned January last year, it wasn't easy for me at first but I must say it's one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Abeg poster resign for your sanity sake. These people don't even treat the contract staff with respect, you are seen as a slave.

    4. For most companies now, keeping them as contract staff is a gold mine. The company pays the contract company say 200k per staff, the contract company pay employees 50k and the oga at the bank say 80k and takes the rest. I have seen staff recruited by company being signed on as though they came through a contractor company just to keep this racket going. Some nigerians are quick to blame their leaders for corruption and everything bad but do worse in their offices/positions.

  6. 12 years contract staff in the bank??? Wow!

I quit my job in a commercial bank a couple of years ago and I wasn't even a contract staff. I just kept having panic attacks whenever I saw my bank logo. Not to talk of the numerous nightmares I had featuring that logo. I just really hated that job. I'm grateful this life is already rigged in my favour so something way better happened when I desperately needed it.

I feel your pain Poster and I am all for the fashion school.

    3. Anonymous24 October 2019 at 15:12 you are not nice at all, why are you sounding like this? so she should continue collecting 60k or 70k as salary for 12 years. If you are running a business for 12 years without making progress that means you need to forget about that business. Think of it you have a child from birth till the child is 12 years you are still feeding he child with breast milk. How will you feel? please stop talking nonsense by sounding so low, she should get promotion from time to time that shows she is growing.

      Delete
    8. 15:12,what did you just say? Been static for 12years,without job satisfaction nor recognition, it's good cuz you don't want her to regret,You sounds like a good horrible person employer, I will pity you.
My fellow Nigerian, Pls resign and do what brings you peace.

In fact, You tried with no career prospects you spent 12years.

      Delete
    9. anon 15.12, it is very clear you are an unambitious, zero driven human!. Even God has instructed us to occupy and be fruitful (not only in marriage) in ALL areas inclusive of jobs be it as an entrepreneur or as a career person!.
You possibly cannot be in one place for 12 years without growth, and just accept "fate" or be happy that "at least i have a job, what about others still jobless" because it (in your words) affords you the basic needs of life.

If i must inform/educate you, if in this 12 years the poster lets say she's single and earns 80k monthly, and could only save max of 40k. This simply means in all the 12 years she's been there, her savings was less than 6m (without taking into account unexpected costs that may have required her to dip into this money). In other words, for a 12 year period she could be left with 4m.
How in God's name do you think this is okay for any human who has toiled over the years be okay with that.

Now, asides the monetary calculations, something called fulfilment exists.. Wanting more, being recognised and feeling valued for the hard work put in is beyond just "having a job".
Please re-evaluate your life and what you think "comfortable" is, because i strongly believe you don't have an iota of what you want out of life or for yourself.

Now to the poster, 12 years as a contract staff without promotion is beyond devastating for someone as myself who is very big on career growth. I'm currently in a job i don't see progression in and i'm moving very soon because I WANT MORE (SO SHOULD YOU AND EVERYONE) who thinks they deserve better.

You need time off this job as you don't seem to enjoy it anymore (even if you ever did). Go ahead with whatever training or business you have in mind and I believe God's Mercy will see you through.
I also understand the fear of the unknown with the way the country is now, and like they say "if you don't try, you'll never know if it was good or not).

MOVE BABY GIRL.... THERE'S MORE TO ACHIEVE OUT THERE!

    10. Hey God!! See mentality. As an intern fresh out of school (pre nysc), i was earning about 160k and believe me it still was not enough. And here we have someone who has invested 12 solid years of her life on a job earning below 100k in this same Nigeria, even if she doesn't need the money, 12 years is too much to waste on an NFA job.
Poster please take that bold step and resign by the end of the year, everything will fall into place for you eventually.

      Delete
  8. In 12 years, you didn’t bother applying to other companies for jobs?
Well, I support you going to a fashion school. Trust me, you will be proud of yourself later on.
Mind you, it’s not going to be easy.
When you eventually start, be humble and respectful no matter how young your boss is. All you want is to learn and be very good with sewing. Be accommodating, cos you will meet people not way below you in age/otherwise. Be friendly with them, you will learn a lot from them too.
Have a good relationship with your boss...that way you get to learn the tricks of tailoring.

You also need to have at least a support system so that after finishing the training you can start up immediately. Reality of the whole matter is that it never going to be an easy ride, being out of work without no money coming in and the only thing you do is to spend the little savings you have is really tough. I would have said maybe you should enroll for weekend classes

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hello poster, I feel your pain. 12 years is a long time to be stuck in one place and you are entitled to feel the way you do.
Please you can get a fashion illustration manual and use YouTube. Buy a sewing machine and practice in the evening or weekends.
After a while, start wearing your outfits and see if you can get clients from your customers or colleagues. When demand is so overwhelming and it corresponds with the right pay, then, quit.

A challenge I have is marketing my designs. No where to go to show off my designs. If only I had where I could be going to show off my unique styles. Trust me, getting a shop isn't even the best when you've not gotten a good customer base.

Sewing for yourself is easy cause you understand you body shape, but sewing for someone else is on a whole different level. Poster please to to a proper fashion school and learn the basics.

And then again, if you learn online and later attend a fashion school, it may be a little hard to "unlearn" what you learnt online, different tutors have their different methods. Please don't confuse yourself, go to a fashion school and learn physically.

  19. poster i can relate to your story i don't want to give you gist cos you already said it all. As a contract staff it is very hard for them to convert you, imagine you even have BSC some have HND expecting conversion while you with BSC haven't smell it yet. Banks use contract staff, once you get old they dump you without any benefit. The day they will ask you to go it will be hard for you to have up to your salary being paid into your account, they do not care weather they used you or not. Leave the bank now that you are still young, strong and can think of something to do.I will advise you to go ahead with your plane to enroll into a fashion school you will make i better than in the bank. Banking take your time, it makes you useless in a way that you will not be able to think outside the box to apply for better opportunities. Make sure you have passion in fashion first else you will no be able to cope. At first once you resign it will not be easy for you reason being that you are use to collecting salary at the end of the month, but along the line you will be alright. Nothing in this life comes easily but with determination and scarifies you will achieve your goal, then everything will balance.

  27. Dear, it's the situation of the country. A lot of people are just managing wherever they find themselves. It could be worse, my dear. Thank your stars. Most people also don't like where they are so don't allow it get to you that much. You're not alone.

Meanwhile, a bird in hand, they say...

The Nigerian economic terrain is intrinsically toxic. Our bastards of leaders have mortgaged our future. Don't make your expectations too high when you venture into. Whether in paid job or self employed. That's why I never judge people who do (or add) 'illegit'. That's only way to make it in this country. Only few people are legit affording the lives they are living.

In as much as I'm not in support of you venturing into self employment, I think 12 years is far too long to be stagnant. Good or bad, you have to try a different terrain. You sincerely need to try something new. At least for your sanity. Monotony could be killing. Plus tge frustrations you descibed. So if the fashion thing is it for you, then go ahead. Just don't have too much expectations. It's not that easy out there(in Nigeria's business world). The challenges of running a solely owned business no be here. I've been there and back. I've come to the conclusion that, nothing surpasses a guaranteed income no matter how little. Maybe bcos I'm laid back and kinda lazy sha.

If you trust that you can work tooth and nail, then by all means pursue anything you wish. You shall flourish. With dedication, doggedness and resilience. But if you're of the school of thought of 'ise kekere owo nla, ni ma ba won se' like me, you better keep earning your 'less than 100k' in peace. Find fulfilment in your job at all costs.

    Best of luck darling.

It is not easy for everybody in this buhari regime and you are complaining about a job. I earn just 100k as a family man and I am managing it with my family to be honest with you. It is not going to be rosy as a fashion designer as well. Entrepreneurs envy salary earners as well. I know a very good fashion designer who does not even make up to 70k in a month as profit despite all social media vibes put into it. Please remove sentiments. I am the most educated in my plave of work and earn far lesser than even some semi-illiterates. Life is not fair as they say because even our prof Yemi is an assistant to an illiterate old man. Save more even with the small salary and keep pushing for better jobs, it will come. The fashion biz can come as side hustle please.

  37. Dear poster. I’m so sorry for the situation you are in but please don’t quit your job yet.

    My advice;

    Ask God to lead you.

Try and save up some money while you learn fashion designing on weekends.

It’s not a must you go to fashion school, I know of someone who works in a bank and owns a big fashion business, she only filled the shop with machines and fashion equipments and employed fashion designers to work for her and the business is booming.

Don’t stop submitting your CV for jobs

You can also try relocating to another country; you can try this new Canada immigration plan; Atlantic pilot or the Rural Northern Pilot, it’s easier and cheap.

    Wish you the best.

  39. My dear i support you to take a walk. I have 2:1 also working in a MFB. I go home stressed everyday. The board has refused to promote us despite the profit we are bringing in. Its a capitalist system. They just sap your energy and leave u dry. I now look older than my age. I have put in 10 years. I also want to take a walk from January 2020.

  41. It's not going to be easy resigning because you've been in that comfort zone for far too long.
However, a lot of time, things do not change for the better if one is not willing to make that radical shift and take a blind leap. Unburden your heart desire to God and make that move sis!!
You will be glad you did in the long run.

  42. Don't quit your job yet my dear.
Register for the fashion school and go there only on weekends, you need a steady stream of income to be able to pay for the trainings because they don't come cheap unless you want to learn the cut and sew obioma way. You need a steady stream of income to be able to set up your place after your training. A shop in a good location, sewing machines and other equipment, a good generator with better kva they don't come cheap. It will be more depressing to become financially stranded afterwards because you don't have money to set your self up after your training.
You can do both concurrently my dear. Nigeria and the economy does not support putting all of ones eggs in one basket.

  43. It's so sad to read all these stories. I will also be putting in my resignation by the end of November where I work and taking some lessons to build new skills. It's necessary. 4 years and no growth. When I asked my boss for a raise recently, he said when the economy improves. Okwaya? Okay. Chukwuaju I continue like this in 2020. May God remember and bless all of us praying and looking up to Him for promotion and increase in this coming year in Jesus name. Amen. The Lord shall surely hear our cries and answer all our prayers. He never fails and is always faithful. Amen

  47. Everyone is saying go to a fashion school. Poster wants to know other options she can venture into besides fashion school as this requires money. So hope you have enough savings. Another option for you will be to sell baby clothes, if you can get someone to ship you clothes to sell from abroad. Used baby clothes here have tags and looks really nice. That way you’ll be able to get more profit. My cousin sent $100 and bought $100 worth of baby cloths. She sold them within 2 days! Or during sales, (holiday sales are coming up soon)they’re much much cheaper. we can talk if you’re interested . I live in the United States. Another option, small chops in a food truck (it’s common here). you’ll need a little more capital on that. Find a good spot and sell it to folks on the street. You might need to hire a security or a male figure around you sha per naija situation. Sad but true. I can send you a link to read about someone who started it in naija. He used his parents pots/pan to get started. Now he’s doing really good! Ps: 12 years is way too long to be in a job you’re not happy with. It’s draining physically, mentally/emotionally and heck spiritually if you’re not happy!

  50. Hello Dear, Am writing because i had a similar problem infact same thing. The fear of the unknown kept me there for about 11 years. You train someone and watch the person grow. No benefits, No entitlements. Everyday they will convert, they will convert. Years keep rolling by. I took a bold step and left to Canada. In the last 2 years plus since i left, i have achieved things that take people 5-years to achieve in Nigeria. Although i went back to school for 1 year. My dear run. the fear of the unknown is what will destroy you. Do you know my friends that were contract in bank with me that are still there up till now still earn below 100k, same salary since i left ooo. Even with all the BUHARI inflation wahala. The price of bag of rice has increased. Please RUN. You will be happy you did. I look back and say those were wasted years. I can relate with your pain fully. I understand everything. As you are doing the fashion school, try express entry Canada. They will appreciate you...

  51. This is my first post on this blog.
I know how you feel because i can say i am in this type of shoe in my work place, though i am not on contract, but the same type of treatment you described is been practiced.
while its heartbreaking to see a young staff you trained becoming your boss in a very short period, and being on contract position in a very long time, no benefits after much self development, PLEASE DON'T RESIGN IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANOTHER STEADY AND STABLE INCOME YET. You see, your salary is small, ridiculously small, but can anyone give you your pay monthly, consistently? If no, don't resign yet. Being an entrepreneur is tedious. More tedious than being a salary earner. Perfect your other source of income before you resign. Never resign out of anger or depression PLEASE.
