Libyan Returnee Says She Was Promised New York But Found Herself In Libya..

Two batches of 173 stranded Nigerians from Libya arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos in the early hours of Tuesday. They arrived in two different flights and were received by the Coordinator, Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Idris Muhammed, at the Cargo Wing of the MMIA.

One of the returnees, 23-year old Aishat Areni from Ogun State, said she was lured with the promise of traveling to New York City in the United States only to find herself in Libya. Miss Areni said her trafficker deceived her that there was opportunity to practice catering in the US because of her interest in catering business, having just graduated from a catering school.

“She told me that she would pay for my transportation and that I would refund when I start working there (in the US),” she said. Miss Areni added that she did not know they were going to Libya until her mates hinted her after a long journey on the road. “I did not know that she was deceiving me until we left and embarked on long journey. “It was my mates that revealed to me that it was Libya they were heading when she started making trouble that it was USA she was promised. “When we got to Libya, I was told that there’s nothing like catering job that I could either be a house girl or I would be sold out to a prostitution network.”

She said she worked for one year and three months but paid her trafficker her five month salaries of N90,000 per month. “I decided to return home because the nature of the work there is not ideal for human being,” she said, warning those contemplating a similar trip to Libya to think twice. “Nigeria is far better than Libya, Libya is dangerous, it is either you are kidnapped, killed, raped, robbed or bombed. Nigerians are not safe there.” Speaking further, she revealed that it was her mother who lodged a complaint to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Person (NAPTIP) office to complain.

“A phone number of a staff of the Nigerian embassy was sent to me and it was the Embassy staff that facilitated my return to the country. I am grateful to Nigeria Government for helping me back to the country, “ she said.

    1. She may actually be that ignorant. How do you think that people who go via backyard to Italy start their journey? She might have thought that New York can also fall under the same category 😩

  7. That was how a former counselor in my constituency almost succeeded in taking me to the US for me to practice my skill since his wife and children now base there.
The offer was so tempting and irresistible bcos I have always wanted to live a better and comfortable.
I didn't add that that this counselor has a philandering dick,he has always pestered me for a relationship even while his family was still in Nigeria.
After i took into account the kind of man he is even though he tried convincing me other wise,i still couldn't come to terms with the offer.
The thoughts of leaving my kids behind to an unknown destination where you know no one other than the person with a questionable reputation, the danger and consequences by far outweighed the desires and prospects of a better life.

We need to be very cautious when we receive offers of travelling abroad.

  10. But you could start the catering business same way in Naija. There is no reason to travel abroad to do catering, simply start up a small cook shop/stand with tasty food and launch yourself from there.

See how you went and labored for a complete stranger for nothing. If you had setup something for yourself you would have been labouring for you and nobody else.

  12. Na so my corper shun colleague told me to bring 200k back in the day for a journey from Cuba to New York via ship. I ask am if all the money in port harcourt is finished for me to go an enslave myself inside a ship to enter a country where I will start hiding like a thief. I told her to stop being lazy and get a job. Meanwhile this my friend dey chop pass people wey get work sef. Sometimes you use wisdom. That money can be used to multiply pure water business or tomatoes or even fruits market. No matter how bad Naija be, people are still surviving. Thank God for next levels sha!!
