Nigerian Woman Deborah Onwu Fatally Stabbed By Teen In Canada While On The Job...

A youth social worker employed by Wood’s Homes was fatally stabbed early Friday morning while she was on the job caring for a man....

Deborah Onwu, 47, of Calgary, was identified by police as the victim found at a residence in the 1800 block of 27th Avenue S.W. around 2:45 a.m. Police say an 18-year-old at the assisted living facility was arrested about two hours later.

Wood’s Homes is a children’s mental health centre that provides treatment to children, youth and families.

When police arrived at the scene, efforts were immediately provided to Onwu, but she later succumbed to her injuries. While an initial search of the residence didn’t turn up the suspect, one person was located and arrested downtown around 5 a.m.

Brandon Jacob Spencer Newman, 18, of Calgary, is charged with second-degree murder in Onwu’s death. Police said late Friday that he remains in custody and is to appear in court on Nov. 1.

Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said the accused had been living at the facility for several weeks.

“Everyone at Wood’s Homes is deeply impacted by this recent tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved including the victim’s family and our many staff.
Debbie was a well-liked and well-respected colleague. She was hard-working and devoted to a career of helping. There are no words to describe the sadness our work family is feeling today.”
said Wood’s Homes spokeswoman Sylvia MacIver.

“She was providing assisted living care to the suspect,” Schiavetta told reporters Friday afternoon. “This was her place of employment.”

Wood’s Homes is working with the Calgary police and occupational health and safety during this investigation as well as providing counselling support for all those affected in their organization, MacIver said.

Because the death happened at a workplace, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is also investigating.

In 2017, Onwu was recognized by the Calgary Society for Persons with Disabilities for her five-year anniversary as a relief residential support worker.

“She can always be counted on to help out in a pinch. Debbie has great relationships with everyone she interacts with and is known for being a pleasure to work with,” it read. “When it comes to embodying CPSD’s values and what it means to be an outstanding staff member, Debbie is undoubtedly a role model.”

Information from neighbours initially suggested the home was associated with the Seven Steps recovery program, however, that is not believed to be the case.

The death is Calgary’s 16th homicide of 2019.

  1. This is really sad. My thoughts and prayers to her family, colleagues and friends. It would be scary to work in that facility after this incident.

    1. This is very sad. In social work, working with teenagers is the most dangerous. Only one week on the job I resigned because anything can happen. Very violent spoilt children.

  2. So sad. Another family thrown into mourning by a mindless killer. Most likely a family's breadwinner. May her soul rest in peace.

  8. A very sad thing, chai. God help the loved ones she left behind.
That's how about 4yrs a go, a female medical Doc(Psychiatrist)in the state of Delaware, USA, was also killed by one of her psych patients. The young man traced her residence & killed her inside her house. She was in her early 50s, from Cross River. I hv forgotten her name.

Mental health is something that no one should play with or downplay it or ridicule someone. It is a serious something. When the mind is messed up, reality is distorted, na only to pray for safety, but do your best to also keep safe.

    2. Same happened in London. The patient traced the woman to her house and stabbed her inside her car very early in the morning. That one is a yoruba lady. It pays but the danger is much.

  13. I had the same type of job as this lady in US. I found myself in a similar situation but the client attacked me with a butter knife. To this day, I thank God because I knew I would have ended up dead if she had managed to grab something sharper. Working with the mentally ill is not something I would do again. I asked to be removed from working from that home permanently. May Deborah Rest In Peace.

    1. I said it yesterday on kidnapping post... Thees evil everywhere in the world, they should stop making Nigeria look like its a hell on earth.
Nigeria is a save place, America is worse than this when it come to safety but those who don't know think it's heaven.

    2. Don, the issue with Nigeria is the FREQUENCY of occurrence. Kidnapping, fire accidents, tanker falling and several other avoidable deaths happen ALL THE TIME in Nigeria

    3. But in America the judicial system works at least and police don't join in committing crime with reckless abandon....that is the main problem here...no justice, no police, and people getting away with crime
