Pope Francis Is Open To The Idea Of Allowing Catholic Priests To Marry.

On the heels of a landmark call by Amazon region bishops for married men to become priests, Pope Francis on Sunday exhorted Catholics to be open to fresh ways of evangelization, saying the church must "open new roads for the proclamation of the Gospel."

He also cautioned against self-righteousness, in an apparent slap at
conservative critics who fear he is weakening the church's foundations.
Allowing married men to be ordained in remote Amazon areas with severe shortages of priests would chip away at the church's nearly millennium-old practice upholding priestly celibacy
.

It would also help the church compete with evangelical and Protestant churches that have been increasingly winning converts there.

A three-week-long Vatican gathering, or synod, on the special needs of Catholics in that South American region featured a vote by a majority of the more than 180 synod bishops who proposed the ordination of married men with established families to help minister to the region's far-flung faithful, where some Catholics don't see priests for months, even years.

Francis expressed gratitude that the bishops spoke with "sincerity and candor." He has said he will put his response in writing by year's end.

    1. Scatter ke? I really think this is way better than the celibacy that is forced on them

    2. Nothing was forced on anyone, it was a path they chose willingly.... Christ even attested three reasons some men won't get married and one of them is for the sake of the kingdom.

  6. This has been a long debate and also it's not for priest to get married rather married men to join the priesthood in a particular area. So they are two different thing altogether.

To me, I think this might really set the church back or the desired aim it stand to achieve might not be met, for the priest already in service may not like the idea of some of them being married and some single. This will further lead to young men who had the interest of being a priest getting married first before joining the seminary.

    1. Exactly. Not for them to get married but for already married men with families to become priests.

  9. Long overdue! This doctrine was enforced by King Henry VIII and its about time it was abolished! Jesus Christ never said followers of Christ should not marry! I’m really happy about this

    1. No you are wrong. King Henry VIII actually pulled England out of Catholic and formed the Church of England to enable himself and other Biahops marry or remarry if they choose to do so.

    2. King Henry VIII? Are you for real? How much do you know about King Henry VIII? Is it the same King Henry VIII that wanted a second wife and the church refused and he left to established the Anglican church? Maybe I read a different history all through.

"A few decades later Pope Gregory VII issued a decree against clerical marriages."

The Church was a thousand years old before it definitively took a stand in favor of celibacy in the twelfth century at the Second Lateran Council held in 1139, when a rule was approved forbidding priests to marry. In 1563, the Council of Trent reaffirmed the tradition of celibacy.

Please anonymous stop this misinformation. King Henry VIII was born June 28, 1491 while it was in the year 1139 the second Lateran council stood in favor of the priestly celibacy. Not everyone here is daft about history. Be guided!!!

    3. Matthew 19:12 stated that there are Eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The last groups is where the church drew its doctrine from . It is not enforced by anybody. It was handed down by the first Pope which is Peter.

    5. Say what you really know from the bible and not to quote what you have been indoctrinated by your church. Moses had one of the greatest anointing, yet he even married twice. you do not make a doctrine from one lone verse of scripture. What about other scriptures that touch on that same issue. Apostle Peter who you claim was the first Pope was even a married Man( Luke 4:38-39), Pls, read 1cor 9:5, 1 Timothy 3:1-7, In Titus 1:5-9, Apostle even gave Titus the criteria to ordain men in the ministry. So, the doctrine of celibacy is not even biblical in the right sense of it. Quoting Matthew 19:12 is a personal choice and not to be enforce as a criteria to ordain men in the ministry. That is why the Catholic Church spend Billions of Dollars in settling sexual related cases worldwide.

    6. Anon 15:02, but I didn't correct the poster in hate naa. Did I? I don't know where you get that assumption from. I didn't even say the poster is daft, rather I said we aren't daft to swallow everything we read. I told poster to stop the misinformation, for I saw the certainty it was written. It was for good so that such mistakes won't fail the poster in an exam or public discussion. I meant no ridicule please, but if you feel so, then I am sorry.

By the way, what's it with "ABI NO BE THE SAME TJ ABI NA ANODA...."

    7. If you are not a Catholic you don't anything about our doctrine. The doctrine was canonised into law in the year 1912.You are just making assumptions , you don't know jack about the church, just believing what you heard on grapevine.

  10. He did not say he will allow catholic priest to get married, what he said was that those who are married in the amazon area will be ordained priest cos they lack priest over there. people should stop contradicting other people's comment/opinion. abeg make we learn how to read, digest the meaning before we they comment.

  12. There's one thing we are overlooking here most especially those saying it will curb the immoral priest flirting around. I want to ask this minute, what about the pastors? aren't they married themselves? But still involve in sexual scandals. Did their marriage stop them from committing formication? A priest that will default whether married or not will do so. It's in the nature of most men to do without sex. Even anointing doesn't takes away character. Ask David he will tell you. Only true discipline does.

  14. I am surprised my comment did not show. Nigerian youths please read and digest well. The Pope didn't say all Priests can marry, but he seeked approval for married men in Amazon region to be ordained as Priests. This was actually proposed by the bishops from the South America. The whole idea is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the region. There are shortage of priests in that area. This is a welcome development as it shows that the church is aware of the needs of the people.
