Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative.....

Heck No!!!!

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
SALARY ISH

Greetings Stella, please post so I can get bvs input.

I got a job this January in an oil servicing company. After the interview (oral and written), few of us were selected. We got appointment letter stating our pay but which was subject to an upward review after the probationary six months.

The thing is that up still now there has been no change in the salary. I have talked with the DA about it and he acknowledges that I am doing a good job, even better than the previous person that occupied the position. So generally I have a positive on the job review and not just from him, but also my direct supervisor.

His response was that we are expecting a big contract, and upon that the salary will be reviewed. It’s not as if there are no jobs coming in as we have other jobs we are handling. The GM keeps spending extravagantly on luxuries and yet says there is no money.

I am also privy to the fact that the previous person earned double of what I earn now as at 3 years ago, before he resigned. Also I know that the others have also not had a review on their salary as I work in accounts.

We were paid 13th month, and instead of a full salary, the already half salary was halved. Older people in the organization earn way better and there has been no downward review in their salary.

I feel cheated and short-changed, as the pay was one of my reasons for moving over to this company. Please advice on how to approach this matter?

Let me step back for those who know better to advice you

    3. You shouldn't have accepted the offer in the first place since you know your predecessor earned double of what you're offered.

Most times some companies don't review salary after probation as stated in the employment letter, why not write to the HR manager, it may not be increased now but be rest assured they will one day appraise your performance and also review your salary.

You have to stopped feeling being cheated hence it may affect your performance.

NB: abeg you in the name of God don't resign o, getting job in naija no dey easy o, you need to come and ask me. I wish I had not resigned from my N100k job 2years ago.

    8. Poster, I think the issue here is not you being cheated, it's the fact that you did not negotiate your salary well ab initio; and it's definitely b/c they offered you something higher than what you were earning in your former coy, little did you know that others (in there) are even earning better.

I advice you to take those offers coming your way iff they are better than your current offer - NOT JUST HIGHER REMUNERATION - consider job security, benefits, compensation, etc.

Also, learn to get better bargains/salary negotiation in your subsequent interviews - always find a way to have an idea of the average earnings of the staff of the organization you intend to enter. Also use the market value of your profession as basics while negotiating with prospective employer/manager. All the best

    10. Poster please you should realise that most people here work in informally structured companies or have never worked in an organization before...what i am saying is screen who you listen to. I mean for any one to say , "some people are looking for half salary" and that forms the basis for the "play dead, while being defrauded atguement" just a whole lot and more. Put out your cv, while you make formal complaints about this shady turn out to the appropriate quaters within the organization...best of luck.

Poster you are within your right to be agitated! A signed agreement should remain an agreement, why should the company be playing smart after giving their word?
Please start applying elsewhere while renegotiating for the salary review with your HR department.
Nigerian employers and thievery are 5 & 6, always looking for ways to shortchange their employees.
This here is one of the reasons I'd always prefer working for a structured company anytime any day, no useless surprises.

Dey there de calculate your GMs luxury life style, you hear. You don't know people pay their due and that is what is called career building. Be patient and stop being greedy and jealous. This attitude is just a few steps away from poisoning and dropping juju for your superiors you have no idea how much they have worked to get to where they are.

    2. Tuale Saphire Thank you for that summary in your last paragraph.

@Poster, if the increase is written in your Employment letter, you are being cheated. So if you can’t change it you either stomach it or leave for a better place. You don’t have any business assessing the lifestyle or salaries of other people who negotiated better or of the owner of the business, are you also evaluating the liabilities or financial projections or cash flow pattern of the company? No, so you are not really in the position to conclude all is rosy for your company.
You are well within your rights to send a formal email to HR, attaching your employment letter and asking for the outcome of your probation period and demanding the plan to effect the increase promised after 6 months; then watch their response. Better you do something about it than go about grumpy and dissatisfied (‘salary that was half before’ not true for you at all, that was what you agreed to when you signed the letter).
Just know that your role may not be indispensable.

    7. Poster. Do you work hard? I mean real hard, putting in a your all, if yes then please begin to look for another job. Here is my real life scenario. Started a consulting company in my unique specialty in IT 3 years ago fresh out of a post grad in that field. I did My double masters in the US. Came back and got madly shortchanged. As in I hear am. For 2 and a half years no headway. Nigerian clients showed me pepper and my area of expertise is such that my clients can only be large institutions. I resorted to doing pro bono work, even driving Uber with my car till it broke down. Then 8 months ago I got a job with a foreign firm with a sizable local presence. Did the interview and on day 1 on the job my boss told me joy you were hands down the most qualified of the 150 applicant for this job. The problem was I was placed on some entry level salty and desperation did not allow me negotiate too much. Then I started working and mehn work I did. Worked every kind of task because we were just 2 in my department, all day everyday including weekends to the extent older staff would talk about the new girl that is working like say na her papa get the company. The boss and I were handling a whole region, so believe me there was work. My salary was exactly what I earned 8 years ago right after NYSC (240k to be precise) then I realized 3 months in after probation that the promised review and upgrade to a higher cadre (considering my advanced qualification in this field) was not forthcoming. I spoke about it, but my boss decided to keep posting me. Mind you my work ethics was being noticed by external clients and partners as well. At the 5 month mark after I realized that these guys are really just gonna keep selling me empty promises I started applying elsewhere and even typed my resignation which sat on my desktop for 3 weeks. 6 months to the day I was employed, without even a concrete offer but many promising ones and some months of upkeep money saved. I walked in to my office and tendered my resignation. My line manager was shocked, HR manager asked me to reconsider, group head was frantic. But in my mind I thought, so it’s ok that I was killing myself here for peanuts (my direct line managers take home was 2.4M a month and only 2 of us could perform that task) yet you claimed my salary review is being considered for 2 whole months while I hadn’t taken a leave in 6month I worked there. In the end on the spot they offered an increase to 500k (I asked for 3 days off to reconsider) went home, thought long and hard, prayed, returned and resigned again (coz trust me once u threaten to resign even if they comply to your request your days are numbered). In a strange twist of fate these guys gave me a full months salary (I assumed I’d have to pay them) and a nice reference letter. I was at home for 3 month to the day till one of their external partners who heard I resigned called me and offered me a managerial position at 800k a month and I’m currently negotiating. What is the reason for this looooong story. Well it’s simple for you to learn that in the work place you need to be objective and strategic and most importantly look out for yourself, wether you are earning 10k or 1 million a month. Your employer can never pay you what you are worth and they owe you no loyalty. Always give 100% but be on the look out. Infact once u get a job start searching for the next better one. The problem is that we mostly get complacent once we get that job and hardly push for better ones. Also I have a rule that no matter the employment, I should always 1st keep aside 6 months living expense saved (which is very low by the way....at this young stage I don’t blow cash anyhow I grow it). Yes the economy is hard, but while not everyone can do what I just did, the truth is there are some valuable tips you could learn from my story. I’m 32 btw started working at 23 and this is my 6th job. My new role is a managerial position. The first I’ve ever held. I’ve also done a 50k a month job and worked just as hard. Wish me luck.

  6. Nigerian workers are the most difficult people. They do not know how to negotiate at all. I work in HR and i am involved in salary negotiations. I shake my head when i see how people do their salary negotiations. Some even insist that company pays them according to the grade. Look unless there is a union salaries are one on one. Ask before joining a coy what they pay and triple it. If you are worth your salary they will pay you.

    ReplyDelete

    1. How does this make Nigerian workers difficult? This is a case of an EMPLOYER not abiding by the contract they signed with the employee.

If you like negotiate triple, an irresponsible employer can still pay less, so the worker is absolutely not the issue here.

      Delete
    2. Hardship and fear make people to not negotiate well. Unless you are changing job then you have had the experience and less scared or without fear to negotiate. You can bet your confidence level now was not same when you started.

    3. What you're passing through is not a new thing in the oil sector. If only contract workers know how much their salary actually is. The Oil Servicing Companies pay far below what is not in the agreement of what the negotiated before the contract was given or awarded to their workers. It's the Ogas and Madams that take home the money.

Hang in there since you're not the only one passing through this. Since there's promise to increase the salary, it will be done. Patience, poster, patience.

Not as if it's the right thing but you will do same once you rise to position director of the company. Even if you don't want, fellow directors will remind you "that's the way it's done".

If the salary you're collecting at the moment doesn't pay your bills then look for something better next year while you're there.

  19. Not all companies pay 13th month as full salary. My previous employer deducted certain sums from our monthly salary which they eventually pay as 13th month and this is a well known international organization. So stop worrying your head over that.

On the issue of salary increment, you need to thread carefully. Even though jobs are coming in there might be some internal issues you might not be privy to like fines/sanctions/lawsuits/bad debts or non payment for projects executed. Just be patient and wait for the appraisal period and see if your salary will be increased.

Comparing yourself to the previous person who held the role won’t do you any good. Your experiences/qualifications may not be the same. Like I mentioned earlier your company might be going through a rough time now which you might not be privy to, which might be the reason why salaries for the new intakes was reduced. I know a lot of companies do it as a cost reducing method. They advise the person on a particular position to resign and recruit someone else with lower pay to cut cost.

Regarding your boss living a luxurious lifestyle, please know he didn’t just start that business when you resumed so he must have made more than enough to live up to that lifestyle or also have made investments which he is currently enjoying the benefits and not necessarily spending the company’s money. Also note that that might not be his only business.

My advice is if your current pay is good and enough to cover your basic/immediate needs with some left for savings then you should give it a year or two and see how it goes.

    1. Best advice ever. I know my company is just one out of the seven others our MD run. so if one is not doing so well, it would never affect his spending and lifestyle. She should just chill a bit, I waited for a year plus before my salary was increased, even when it was stated that probation was 6 months. So is just how most of these private sectors do, they don't have a structure on how these things should work. Unlike the government sector that already have a structure set down for each level you attain.

  20. 1) You cannot compel anyone to pay you a dime more in salary or wages than you negotiated for.

    2) Even if your predecessor was earning 10X more than you do now, it is only relevant to your boss if they hired you cos you're cheap(er) labour.

    3) "Subject to upward review" doesn't actually mean anything will change, even after your probation period.

    4) Your employer can travel abroad and buy diamonds every month if they like; they don't owe you anything other than what they're contractually obligated to pay you. "There's no money" doesn't always mean it doesn't exist, just that they don't see why they should give it to you. Your employment letter makes you staff, it's not an invitation to join their family and shouldn't give you any reason to expect to be treated as - especially if you don't live with them. Employers go above and beyond for because they WANT to, not cos they have to.

    5) Before you get all emotional and get yourself fired, think about and write down all the reasons you think you deserve a pay raise. "My predecessor earned XYZ" should NOT be on that list in any way, shape or form. Concentrate on showing the value you're adding to the organisation, especially if your performance exceeds expectations and has a bearing on increased profitability. Provide proof of how this is happening. "My DA say, my direct manager say" is deniable office gossip, not proof.

    6) Settle on a figure.

    7) Think seriously about and decide what you will do if they refuse. Then, formally request a personal meeting with whomever you need to, to discuss it.

    8) Present your case like a sane and rational human being. That means no shouting, no tantrums, no threats, no swearing, no drama, no crying, no demented or ratchet behaviour. Have and give out copies of your proof of how your "over and beyond" contributions make you an asset too valuable for the company to risk losing. Nothing about your boss' foreign trips and lifestyle should come out of your mouth, when they agree you're valuable but tell you they don't know where the money will come from to pay you more. Cos some kinds of bosses might successfully claim that you're monitoring them and their personal activities, in order to collude with kidnappers or robbers. And that's how some people get locked up for crimes that do not exist. Therefore, you are to focus on how the value you're adding in dimensions they did not expect when they hired you, is making the company much richer than they would ordinarily be if you weren't there; I can't stress this enough.

    9) Go through with whatever you decided @ #7.

NB: Hopefully, you've been a stellar employee up to this point and there's nothing bad - queries, lateness, crazy behaviour, insubordination, theft, etc. - in your file.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I will not be happy if any staff of mine complain like this. Why? Let me break it down for you.

    1. It's none of your business if you think I'm living a luxurious life. You do not know how I fund that, you working for the company doesn't mean you know all my sources of income. I do not have to take money from other sources to increase the salary of a particular company. Hence if one company is not doing well, you will get your pay according to what the company can afford at that moment without it causing us to go bankrupt.

    2. How much the previous person was being paid is none of your business because his/her C.V and experience might be more than yours. You probably need more training to catch up than the previous employee which will cost me more hence you do not expect me to pay you an equal salary just because you have the same job title.

    3. You went through interview, you had the opportunity to negotiate and you did. Why then will you be bitter because of inside gossips.

If you think you deserve more, I wouldn't mind if you put in a formal letter asking for a renegotiation of salary. It just shows me how smart you are and I will be happy I hired someone who can stand up for themselves meaning I can send them for meetings without fear as they will stand up for the company. I will negotiate with you and if possible increase the salary or tell you if ABCD is achieved then I will increase it. That just mean I want you to prove yourself that you can help achieve that particular thing. Some people just want to come to work and receive salary at month end. They do not care about anything than salary. Employers want you to be innovative, self motivated and much more.

I remember a worker once come to me and asked, "madam if I achieved beyond my target and brought in xxx amount, will you be willing to increase my salary". After the back and forth, we found a middle ground. She achieved beyond that, her salary was increased so was her position. So you see, it all depends on you. Nobody wants to lose an asset so ask yourself if you are an asset in that company or just a passerby.

You can put in a formal letter stating why you need an increase. Don't forget to add all your achievements so far, example problems that were there yet you helped solved and how increasing your salary will affect your productivity positively.

    1. Anytime an offer letter is handed to you, take your time and go through it thoroughly then ask questions and negotiate where necessary. Your offer letter might state review of salary after 6 months but that doesn't mean immediately after 6 months. Most employers are tricky and most employees are too excited about the new job or desperate to read and understand.

A good offer letter will state the process and give range or be specific about the amount that will be added and even quote date. You will be informed if you will be called back for real employment letter and renegotiation or if after the 6 months, if you are still on the job then it means you have become a permanent staff. I tell people, interviews are not only to assess you; you must assess your employers to. It makes them give you certain kind of respect when you are finally hired.

  24. Employment in Nigeria is...And on a daily basis, organizations are lowering the standard and I wonder why there are professional institutions and labour union in the first place. The oil & gas industry is even fair because even as a contract staff, you are ball. It is also important to note that salary must not be the only motivation for taking up an offer and if that is, please, do your home work well and negotiate well. If not, you are on a long thing and may discover that although you are employed as a 'full staff' you might just be on a contract pay. Multinationals do this especially those that use outsourcing firm which is a modern day slavery (let me not even go down this lane now).

Focus on gaining as much experience and exposure as you can, stay for 1-2 years maximum before moving. Depending on your level, if you move now, there might be brows raised about your job hopping and if only 'money' is a motivator for you. By the time you move, you'll be able to negotiate well and be sure of the integrity of the organization before you accept the offer.

  26. Go to access, gt and some other banks and see how HND do same and even more work than the BSC holder, yet they are highly discriminated. Why don't you stop discussing this issue with other colleagues n supervisors, concentrate on the job and u can quietly be looking for another job. You may get that increment or another job may come. Just do your work for now then go home and rest....

It may even be possible they found out the last person in that position was being overpaid for his or her output and they have to rehire to bring the pay down to normal.

Money shouldn't be the only motivator in jobs. They are not owing... Some are being owed...like some in state govts.

Gather the experience from the Coy too, that is more important

  27. Dear Poster, you are within your right to ask questions since your contract letter carries the clause of an increase subject to a performance review in 6 month.
You need to first find out if there's been any performance review since your probation period elapsed, I don't know how your company works but in mine, my direct line manager can provide me with that info.
If there's been a review, find out your performance. Again, performance review discussions and eventual result in my company is plain and open to each employee, so I can actually keep a track of my yearly performance review.
Find out if your company works same way (I doubt with this their way way).
Answers you get for the above questions will help you know if you are being shortchanged or the company does not just have enough reason to increase your pay.
Whatever outcome comes out of this, determine to do your best on the job while also upgrading your knowledge and skills, so you can start pushing out your well padded CV come next year if things remain as it currently is.
    Ciao.
