School Of Thought On Reason The US Suspended Immigrant Travel Visas For Nigerians.

''It has little or nothing to do with Boko Haram, has nothing to do with Buhari, has nothing to do with arrest and detention of journalist, has nothing to do with Nigeria’s ban on gays and lesbian, but has everything to do with absence of a workable system in our identification and verification processes.

The main reason Nigeria is suspended from Immigrant visas category is because Nigeria does not have a credible background investigation system that groups like Interpol can rely on to vert and certify originality.

What that means is that if someone commits a crime in lagos and relocates to Kano, there’s no system that can be used to track crimes and people across state lines.

Virtually all African countries have such systems even Ghana has it, Cameroun everyone has original birth certificates but nigeria prefers to have multiple identity cards not because they are interested in monitoring and tracking people but because they want to make money. Our country is a transaction society, you can buy anything even the human conscience.

Most responsible modern states in the world have tracking systems, but nigeria does not. A typical example, if you are about 40 years, if you go to your primary school to get your records they don’t have it. Principals and headmasters do not have computers in the 21st century.

Now only states that are considered rogue nations or failed states that do not have workable systems. Most nations in this category are nations at war. Nigeria is not at war but the irresponsible nature of our government makes Nigeria a war zone.

Now, back to US suspension, let me make it clear that only Immigrants visas are affected. Non immigrant visas are not affected. An immigrant visas is a type of visa that allows you to stay, work or even become a US citizen after you travel.

This category involves the type of visa you get when you marry an American citizen and have to relocate or the type of visas given to parents when their American citizens file for them or the visa you get through lottery.

Another category of visa affected is birth visas, these are medical tourism visas to come to America and have a baby. It is those categories of visas that are affected. Some waivers do apply. However, non immigrant visas like visitors or business visas are not affected, however going forward it will be difficult to get

What America is saying is that we cannot continue to give immigrant visas to your people if our investigators have no tools to work with to verify the true identity of your immigrant populations.

Example, someone who wins lottery or marries a US citizen, the investigators will want to check him up to primary school, but we have no records. Our government should be ashamed that we do not have a reliable working system to track Nigerians instead of deceiving the people to assume it is unfair what US has done.

Our government should be ashamed that today we are grouped with countries like Eritrea and Sudan. A sensible country, what they should be doing now is to put such a system in place, but they will not. Last year, two of my American friends visited Nigeria and came back with Nigerian international passports. That can never happen in Ghana or even Liberia. But with money you can buy a mans conscience in Nigeria.

With as little as three to five hundred dollars people are ready to subvert the law and do the unthinkable. With just Ten thousand Naira anyone can get local governments origin letters, worst still, today traders who never stepped their legs in universities are given degrees and people even serve youth service with fake results. If you are America will you continue to give immigrant visas to a country you cannot verify a simple certificate?

If you are America will you continue to give citizenship to immigrants whose entire documents for relocation to your country may have been forged?

We forge ID cards, we forge bank statements to get visas, we forge birth certificates, we forge marriage certificates, we forge election results, what is it that we do not forge?

We should not blame the US, the truth is we have failed as a nation. More disturbing, those who are clamoring that we need a working system are those who are arrested and locked up on frivolous reasons, charged with hate speech and ostracized by society.

According to my good friend Frank Anoh, he says we are a nation of criminals. I somewhat would agree with him. We are a nation of criminals. However, I blame my generation more, we continue to subvert the system for a plate of porridge. Until this independence era politicians leave the scene, Nigeria will continue to operate in the 16th century. God help us.''

    1. If you have not registered for NIN, or you live in Lagos and have not registered for LASRRA, you are part of the problem.

So govt have done their part, you do yours and stop complaining. If money matter was not involved, many people won't register for BVN till today.

    2. Adesega u have not made any valid points. Since 2017 I registered for NIN, until today I don't have the card. I applied for an overseas programme and was required to present a picture of my ID card. I couldn't. So is it now my fault? Lord have mercy on Nigeria

  4. So i read on a post on face book that Nigeria was banned from the USA in 1984 and now again in 2020 and both times Buhari was president. Is this a coincidence of bad luck or we just voted in an evil spirit?

  6. ‘Last year, two of my American friends visited Nigeria and came back with Nigerian international passports’ What a shame!

I read here that ‘it’s only the poor that will be happy with the US ban’ and I just shook my head. If you imagine America to be your company, it’s likely you will extend the ban to much more than immigrant visas. There are loopholes in the American laws/process that make it easy to abuse their immigration system, and that what America is now responding to. Out of the most developed nations, people abuse the immigration of the US more and that has led to a strain on their social security bill and by extension, their fiscal deficit. I am not even surprised, esp the birth tourism, that was the most ridiculous!

Little by little, Nigeria will wake up. We are not sufficiently patriotic in our country, that’s why we have remained the way we are. If we all see the ‘Nigeria around us’ as a personal project, or (for this lucky enough to be in influential govt positions) see our positions as a rare opportunity to contribute ‘selflessly’ towards moving Nigeria towards the light, with time we would be in a better place. But if we don’t use our tongue to count our teeth, then other countries will do it for us, with a pike.

    1. Mystic, I read that comment too that, ‘it’s only the poor that will be happy with the US ban’ and also shook my head. I nearly commented under that Anonymous bv but let it slide. It's obvious that someone with that mentality cannot reason beyond Naira and Kobo.
Nigerians are not definitely not patriotic enough to rise up to the challenge of building a great nation.

  7. Personally, l think there’s more to this decision. If, he had placed a ban on visiting/ tourist visas, it could have been understandable because a lot of Nigerians, come in here, overstay their visas and refuse to return home. During an immigration raid a year ago, Homeland security stated, “there were unusually very high numbers of Nigerians who were staying illegally in the country” But, the surprise here, is the ban on immigrant visas. There are a lot of Nigerian immigrants here, who would love to have their spouses, children and parents join them here. Why ban that category.?? What happened to family unity?
The non immigrant visa category too would be affected. The guys at the Port of Entries, might decide not even to let that category of visitors in. We remember the chaos from the first ban. Even people from those countries, who were living legally here and went out of the country were not allowed back in. It took protests and several days before all the confusion was cleared up. I am not sure at this point, if the guy, got the immigrant or non immigrant categories mixed up.

  8. Another thing, this identity management process being touted, is not the major reason for the ban, it’s just the most objective reason that will not necessitate an outcry, or an accusation that America is being racist or discriminatory.
Point plain - America desperately needs to reduce the burden on its social services and the attendant cost. First step towards that is population management.

  9. We have not even concluded this visa ban but coming into the US now will be hell. Nobody without a US passport will be allowed into the country, if, they have been to China in the last fourteen days. Those overzealous custom people will not even take time to check passports to see if someone was in China recently. They don’t even have enough staff for all that. The custom lines will be crazy long. Mehnn!!

  10. Eyaa so what will now happen to Mykhoool of 90days fiance, with his hopes of getting an immigrant visa after his wedding to Angela recently...chai all those endurance and insults from Angela.

  11. It's going to be a very very long way to reverse this. Where is the Nigeria government going to start to ID all those that they let in through open border because of elections? Will the cause of IDing them expose the fraud that is Nigeria Census? Will this pave way to give ID to the invaders from outside Nigeria because they are of same religion as the north?

This ban will hit southern Nigeria hard as they travel more to the US. If other countries go this Trump route, it will be bad.

All the newly married waiting to migrate to the US are stuck. All that wanted to birth their children will rue their bad luck.

This is not like the speech by the minister of health few days ago that "we are ready for the coronavirus".
Let's see how ready Bubu is as this is the second time the US is banning Nigerians from entering the country under his watch.

  12. This is an insightful piece. We are still very far from being un-ban.
Can this wake up our conscience?
Can the government arise to do something?
Will the people be willing to change?

    1. @Engraced, I can provide answers to your questions:
Can this wake up our conscience? No
Can this government arise to do something? No, this government cannot.
Will the people be willing to change? No, they will seek alternatives in other countries. The people would rather continue in their old ways-stealing and corruptions- than do the right thing.

Wait oh, does it mean Kenya, with all the terrorist activities is better than Nigeria?? Zimbabwe too??
Anyway, l just read something about waivers. So far, only 2 percent of people from banned countries have been issued waivers to come in and see a dying family member. Na wa o!!

    1. @Anonymous 14:06, yes Kenya is far better than Nigeria when it comes to data keeping for its citizens. Less than 1% of Zimbabweans apply for USA immigrant visas as Nigerians. I know it should still be a concern to the US.

  15. A lady cursed me out some time back when I said any visa can be taken away.

A country with pride would take the opportunity to build up themselves and prove to the US that they can thrive without them, but knowing male African leaders they will just go grovel and beg the US to spare them. See Buhari went to a closed door meeting with Trump last year or the year before and see the outcome. I don't even know if Buhari has made any major positive trade deal with any other nation during his tenure. And I think his physical appearance may be what is turning ppl off, he looks like he will physically fall apart in no time. Even with his age there is no vitality in his body, ppl fear getting into business with ppl who like they could drop dead at any moment.

  16. As a South African. I am just observing. For Nigerian politicians and business menwho are frolicking with SA women. Common learning how the SA identification system works they can not. Even after bitterness from Nigerians you can not take away the fact that our country systems are world class .if you like continue telling us about white men who came into our country. At least it is functioning. I can go on

    1. Pridefulness always lead to destruction. Nigeria should be further ahead in development and prosperity than where it is today. All Nigerian leaders are without focus, every single one of them.

Ghana quietly did its thing without fanfare or seeking validation from anyone. See the success of the year of return recently and now so many black ppl have fallen in love with Ghana and its ppl, many are ready to relocate and live out there African dreams because of the inclusiveness of the country and benevolence they have always shown to the descendants of the stolen ppl of Africa. Ghana will be alright. They should focus on self reliance though and do not allow themselves to be under the thumb of the Chinese

  18. i am not sure why we heap all nigerias problems on Buhari. This problem is a collective problem that past governments should have put in place and we as a people should comply instead of bribing our way out of everything.
