Buhari Appoints Osinbajo And Governor El-Rufai As Members Of Power Sector Reform Group

It seems Disco's are on their way out of the mainstream:::

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the composition of a Power Sector Reform Coordination Working Group, under the leadership of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

A statement by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state and chairman of the committee, set up by the National Economic Council (NEC) on Power sector reforms and Distribution Company ownership (DISCOs), said that the new Working Group will incorporate the ongoing efforts of his committee and ensure all power sector initiatives are on the same page under the leadership of the Vice President Osinbajo.

‘’This new presidential working group will coordinate ad-hoc committee and other efforts on a national scale, and report progress fortnightly to Mr. President,’’ the statement clarified.

According to the statement, ‘’the presidential working group, which will meet weekly, commenced work at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, at a meeting at which the Vice President presided.’’

The statement added that members of the group include, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, representing the Nigerian Governors’ Forum as well as the National Economic Council and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who leads the German Government/Siemens initiative to improve power supply.

Other members of the group are the Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emiefele and Special Adviser to the President on Infrastructure, Ahmad Zakari who is also the secretary of the Working Group.

The statement emphasized that ‘’the key objective of the working group is to harmonise various efforts by the Federal Government and the 36 States, through the National Economic Council (NEC), on power sector reform and to oversee the design and implementation of a well-coordinated roadmap for the sector.

  2. They should not reform anything that will end up disrupting our current state of light oh. 23/24hrs of light is not an easy feat in this country as it is.

  3. El-Rufai that is saddled with the enormous task of salvaging Kaduna from the hands of bandits. Won't this one be a distraction?

  4. With all these many young vibrant entrepreneurs thinking ourside the box and making great strides while at it why not invite them for things like this, why not engage people that can actually get the job done?

  5. FG should let go of transmission. You privatised GENCOS and DISCOS but held onto transmission. That's why the power sector is in a mess.
    Privatise power totally.

Alternative energy is the way to go. Solar energy farms should be set up in the North instead of underground sponsoring of BH in Maiduguri.

I don't know what is inside the brains of the Northern political leaders and elites, cotton wool?

  6. The TCN MD has to be removed as he is very corrupt and inept. Under his watch many transformers have burnt down because he is an Accountant and not an Engineer. One transformer recently burnt down in Kebbi which he is keeping secret from the Minister of Power because too many transformers have burnt down under his watch because of his inexperienced instructions.

  7. When Buhari commenced his first term in 2015, for the first 3 months the Discos gave us full and steady seldom interrupted power supply, this was based on Buhari's "Body language" thaty gave everyone the impression that he is a no-nonsense revolutionary. After about 3 months when it dawned on Nigerians that the one whom we thought was a Lion is even worse than a kitten, the Discos promptly reverted to their trademark extremely poor power supply which they have maintained till today. This shows that they are capable of supplying us with full, steady and uninterrupted power if they so wish but because there is no genuine leadership to whip them into line, they are lackadaisical, mediocre, oppressive and nonchalant about it all. So if they are shoved aside and new entities are brought in to handle power supply they will know they caused their own downfall.
