Senator Introduces Bill To Ban Generators And Proposes 10-year Jail Term For Sellers

Senator Bima Enagi representing Niger south, has introduced a bill seeking to outlaw power generating sets, better known as ”generators”, in the country.

The bill, which passed first reading at a plenary session on Wednesday, proposes to ban the importation and use of all kinds of generators.

A lot of Nigerians depend on generators for electricity generation in their homes and businesses owing to irregular power supply.

The country currently generates approximately 4,000mw of electricity but distributes about 3,000mw for a population of about 200 million.

A copy of the bill which was obtained by TheCable states that anybody who imports into or sells generators in Nigeria risks at least 10 years of imprisonment.

It states that anybody who: “Imports generating sets; or knowingly sells generating sets shall be guilty of an offence and be liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than ten years”.

It added that all persons are hereby directed to “stop the use of electricity generating sets which run on diesel/petrol/kerosene of all capacities with immediate effect in the country”.

The bill, however, exempts generating sets used for “essential services”.

It defined essential services to include medical purposes (hospitals and nursing homes and healthcare facilities), airports and railway stations/ services.

Bunch of jokers!!!

  8. This one is just an idiot!!!
    Can you imagine?
Yet their homes run on lister generator 24/7.
How many states can boast of 12hrs uninterrupted power supply?

I see them making laws that they won't obey but subject the masses to obey.

FIX YOUR COUNTRY!!! WE DIDN'T PUT YOU THERE TO KILL US!

They will come now to tell us to use inverters; tell me how many families can afford it.

Remind me again how many states have adopted the 30k minimum wage.

Ah God, shey you can see this people? Of all the problems this country faces ,generator is this one's headache.

  10. It is not their fault, I blame all of us, the masses for being passive,in a sane clime, all of them should be in prison. They are pushing us to the wall, and we will soon revolt. Useless people.

  11. It's like this lawmaker doesn't know the meaning of the bill he is proposing. How are we going to handle the situation of epileptic power supply?
It has rained just twice this month and no light since then!

  12. Imagine these people? Why don't you fix the Power situation? Once you do that no one will bother buying generator. I guess houses and businesses of lawmakers fall into essential services. Mschew

  13. This right here is the definition of RIDICULOUS.
What measures have they taken to ensure sufficient electricity supply for the citizens?
I'm beginning to believe Nigeria wouldn't get better.

  14. How can you propose such ban when Mr president hasn't fixed the light situation..You want us to stay in darkenss, this ban should start from ASO rock

  15. If only there was steady power,
    Small businesses would thrive.

  16. They should be jailed for even suggesting it. When we only have 2 hrs light a day and atimes none in days? We should start stoning these bunch of jokers. Who will need generator if there is steady power? These present government all they care about is how to frustrate the masses but they will die painfully one by one. Nonsense. Instead of them to have reasonable proposals, they are always proposing nonsense. Work on improving power generation first.

Ordinary Cotonou , people don't even remember what den is used for. They have power outage but it doesn't last

  19. The kind if rubbish some some people spew. As per we have 247 power supply right? The senator is insane. What nonsense. Generators that has been helping our lives since 1900. Total rubbish only in Nigeria.

  20. Maybe they want us to start using inverter and which is very costly.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Chilove they will have to dash us the inverters, how many Nigerians can afford it, it's too pricey. How did we get here???

    ReplyDelete
  22. Let me buy 2 new gens first before they sign this into law.
Seriously, I dey vex. These people are just a bunch of buffoons. Don't mind my language

  23. Will this not be better if everyone starts using inverter?? The noise and environmental pollution caused by generators is on another level and we all definitely see the harmful effects as time progresses.

    2. Will u buy the inverter for them? You think inverter is 20k, 30k or 50k???

And when u don't have light to charge the inverter, what then?

    3. My neighbor is an engineer who designs inverters, the irony is that his gen is always on for almost 24 hours.

  24. Both the sponsor of the bill and the chamber that allowed it pass second reading are all crazy.

  25. I wonder what our offense is for us to deserve the kind of leaders we have,it's so tiring.

They leave important things and neglect the relevant ones. Who's happy to run on generators? Why not provide 24 hours power supply first and see who will run a generator.

Our leaders have failed us.So pathetic.
Even with constant electricity, you still need a generator for emergencies.
God will deliver Nigeria from these people one day.

  26. If a better alternative is put in place before the law is passed, Nigerians will welcome the new development.

  28. Senator Bima Enagi is definitely an illiterate and I bet all his houses are powered by gen. The bill should start with banning political office holders first. He will not see bill mandating Govt to produce 10000MW for the people to send to senate. Yeye Fowl

  29. This people are confused

  30. By his DUMB logic, Nigeria may as well ban the use of cars and motor vehicles as they equally pollute the environment. She shd also ban the sale of water and installation of boreholes until her water corporations emerge from comatose. She shd cease importation of computers, electronics, building materials and every form of equipment with iron and steel component until 'Ajaokuta' starts rolling. The list is endless 'cos Nigeria is low on production. To think that such CRASS MADNESS was even entertained on the floor of the Senate. When we tell ppl to stop offering 'thug' and 'jobberman' services to push CLUELESS ppl into government, they won't hear. Una don dey see am now. Even ur 'I beta pass my neighbour' dem wan collect. I don't blame them, it's when the ppl refuse to come together to occupy and shut the country down that they find it difficult to understand who exactly is serving who. U can be sure that the so called senator/s have already purposed to place themselves under 'essential sevices' cadre. Of course they can't imagine life devoid of 'chilling with the sidechicks'. Dat una 'animal farm' movement go jam correct coronavirus, una hear? I rest my case.
