We were given food by good Samaritans this period, shey someone will be begging for money to fill when some have nothing to eat. Thank God this is a developing area. Corona pack your load and go biko

See ehn, God really saved us all in Nigeria. Most of us have inhaled smoke from home cooking or neighbors cooking with it. Nor be Oyibo de die from smoke inhalation or suffer severe lung damage.

    1. Oyibo kids would all have had asthma from the firewood cooking. In boarding house those days, it was firewood they used in the kitchen. Chai.. l remember when we wanted to iron our uniforms and Sunday white. We took our irons to the kitchen to beg for charcoal. The smoke that entered our nostrils nor be small. If you used that iron in boarding house, line up here..

    2. Yes oh. Where I live in PH we had to sign that we won't use kerosene stove to cook. Only Gas or electric cooker. When I asked the landlord why he said he detests black soot on his walls. Guess what? Today the black soot from God knows where keeps redesigning the house. House that we painted in December is beginning to look black again. God please this year shall not pass us by. We will surely move into our own house in Jesus name, Amen.

  20. Enter shopping malls in the USA and see people buying packaged firewood for their grills.
In fact, it was one of the first things that got cleared in the corona panic buying.
Nigerians attach status symbol to everything. It is not as if when those gas cylinders explode,
you have fire service to respond. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

    1. Ok na. So you, do you cook with firewood in your house??

You clearly stated that people in the USA bought packaged firewood for grills not to boil water for tea.

    2. @Aboki
What I mean is that Nigerians make everything to be a status symbol; cooking with gas, dead human hairs,
driving of cars etc. All these things are meaningless to enlightened people. It doesn't matter whether
someone uses firewood for grill and another uses it to boil water. All are COOKING!

      Delete
    3. Grills are outside in the garden!! And it's for grilling/bbqing not for cooking every day food.

      Delete
    4. We are talking about cooking three meals a day with firewood or gas. Not grilling. Using charcoal for grilling too is a choice. I use gas grill.
Oyibo never suffered naa. If they used firewood like most of our parents did, they will not want to anymore. Besides, most grills have covers.

    5. I' just waiting for shim to reply me first then we'll know if she's among the Nigerians that attach status symbo to everything.
End time critic, everyone in this world is wrong except you. Shior

    6. Sometimes, you just like to score cheap points, very baseless comparism.
Grills are in the garden, how often do you use the grill? Do you grill during winter? Definitely not.

How do you compare grilling during the weekends or alternate weekends in summer to cooking every day meals on firewood??
@ 18.27, you are right. Oyinbos do not like stress at all, Imagine having to light firewood to boil water for coffee 3 times a day.

Eggs nko? You fry over firewood ba?
      Yam nko?
      Beans nko?

How does food that is covered taste better over firewood? Do you put the firewood inside the rice too?

Biko, just say you cant afford gas. Simple.

  30. I was raised in the city so it's gas. But have you tasted Edo egusi+tomato soup cooked with firewood? Have you tasted well-prepared delicacies with firewood? The difference is clear, mbok. Even though I dont know how to use firewood, I love it and dont mind preserving that part of our cultural heritage in my backyard someday. Only black man no dey like wetin him get.

  31. It is true, the food is much more flavourful, but it is not healthy. My grandmother cooked with firewood for many years and eventually she lost a lot of her vision. It is something to do occasionally not daily. I do not know if inhaling the smoke does anything to your lungs overtime, but vision is too critical to me, just not worth it to cook with firewood exclusively.

  37. When we moved into our house, we had a lot of unused wood. So we started cooking with the wood. Even when our own finished, my siblings and I would scout the neighborhood for wood. It was a developing area. We'd ask some homeowners if we could carry the ones they were no longer using, they gave us. I was responsible for making the fire and I got so good at it that even during the rainy seasons, I could make a bonfire without a drop of kerosene. My secret was achara tree, I'm not sure if the English name is bamboo or baobab. I'd chop it in smaller pieces and put in a sack. Oh memories!
The last time I went home, I went to the backyard and saw my fireplace now desolate, cos my mom cooks with gas now. I remembered how my boyfriend would climb the neighbor's fence and gist with me while I made fire and cooked.

My point is, food tastes better when the heart is cherry. Doesn't matter how or what you cook with.
