Governor Ikpeazu Tells Abians That Days Ahead Will Be Difficult Due To COVID19

Border to Abia state has been closed...
Wearing of face mask in Abia state is compulsory....

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has told Abians that days ahead will be difficult as the state records two positive cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Addressing journalists in Government House, Umuahia on Tuesday, Governor Ikpeazu, who announced closure of a private clinic where one of the index cases was initially treated, also called for more courage and commitment in the hands of front line personnel and all citizens.

“The days ahead will be difficult and calls for more courage and commitment in the hands of our front line officials and all citizens.

“Government will continue to provide all the PPE required to protect our medical and paramedical personnel. We are sending a consignment of additional PPEs and other materials to support the Federal Medical Center ( FMC), Umuahia.

“The private clinic where one of these patients was treated is hereby closed to the public until properly disinfected, while all the doctors and nurses who attended to them still remain quarantined until the results of their tests come out.”

Ikpeazu also stressed that all borders will remain closed, while encouraging citizens to always wear face masks and continue to practice social distancing.

“Government will insist that all borders shall remain locked till further notice.

“All our citizens should remember that wearing of face masks in Abia is compulsory.

“Government will encourage all citizens to continue to practice social distancing and strict rules of hand washing as well as use of sanitizers.”

He also said the government will embark on massive contact tracing of those that came in contact with the two index cases.

“We shall embark in massive contact tracing across all the LGAs where these index cases have been associated with in the recent past. Hence, Ikwuano, Ukwa West and Umuahia North LGAs will be covered during this contact tracing.

“The state shall embark on massive community testing drawing samples from ward to ward even in local governments that are remote to the target LGAs and the details will be announced.

“It is important to note that both patients had underlying medical conditions ranging from Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Stroke and Heart failure. However, we are optimistic that our medical team and the team at FMC are capable of doing a good job, God helping them.”

Recall that before confirmation of the COVID-19 patients, Abia State had provided two isolation centers in Aba and Umuahia with a combined capacity for about 50 patients

The state had also trained all frontline officials down to the Primary Health Care (PHC) level, and provided 6 state owned ambulances, ventilators, oxygen concentrators, patient monitors and more than enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

According to Governor Ikpeazu, the two patients are old (70 and 72 years old respectively) and have no previous history of travel at least in the recent past.

That statement up is a big lie. The patients have been at FMC umuahia for sometime. I don't know what's wrong with Abia state government. Giving people wrong information.

Let me post the press release of the FMC MD.

  11. *FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE UMUAHIA, RESPONSE UPDATE*
    *COVID 19 OUTBREAK:*

On Monday evening the hospital received a report of two confirmed COVID 19 cases from NCDC network laboratory, both of which were patients receiving care in our hospital already.

Both patients have been successfully evacuated to the isolation facility for care and contact tracing of all who were involved in the management of the patients in casualty, ICU, Male Medical Ward and Ludlow Slessor Complex have commenced. The affected areas have been shut down for now and decontamination has started.

In line with the best global practices we are collaborating with the relevant state and federal agencies to ensure that all contacts within (staff and patients) and outside the hospital are traced, assessed, screened and if necessary placed under surveillance or appropriate care.

Meanwhile, all those who came in direct contact with these cases should commence immediate 14 days self isolation and report to the facility if they observe any symptoms.
Therefore, I wish to appeal to all staff to remain calm, as we hope that these measures will enable us achieve expected results.

It is indeed a trying time for us all - as a country, state and institution, therefore all hands must be on deck to ensure that we successfully navigate this challenge together. Meanwhile as earlier directed, I wish to reiterate that you should not attend to any patient not wearing a face mask, hand gloves and adequate PPE.

Likewise, staff are enjoined to continue to practice more than ever all the recommended public health practices - wearing of face masks, regular hand hygiene, environmental hygiene, social distancing and appropriate use of PPE.

All triage nurses at the service entry must screen for respiratory symptoms in all patients. If present the unit head should be informed immediately for evaluation and appropriate care.

Also, it is on a sad note I wish to inform you that we lost a new house officer, who just resumed duty four (4) days prior to his demise. While this incident coincided with the diagnosis of two COVID 19 patients in our facility, I wish to state categorically that his death is in no way connected with COVID 19,and the deceased doctor did not have any role in the management of these cases.

While management wishes to commend all staff for their support, cooperation and understanding so far demonstrated in the face of this pandemic, there is need to increase our vigilance by increasing our index of suspicion. I assure you that we will continue to work together with all staff to ensure a safe work environment.
