Nigerian Govt Explains Why There Is An Increase In Coronavirus Cases In Nigeria

Nigerian Government has revealed reason for the spike in the cases of coronavirus across the country.

It attributed it to the ongoing community transmission of the virus.

Dr. Osagie Ehanire, the Minister of Health, made this known during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Minister said that the renewed efforts by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to do more aggressive testing is also responsible for the increased cases recorded.

According to him, “Concerning the increased number of cases, there is the notion that community transmission is going on very strongly and therefore, increasing the cases of those infected with COVID-19 and giving you something to find.

“It is also due to the improvement in testing and case finding. There is a renewed effort to do more aggressive testing by the NCDC – house-to-house testing and following any clusters that are of interest to increase the testing and to get more cases.

“We are going to order for over 100,000 cartridges of the GeneXpert machine through the Global Fund facility that we have through the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM).

“Also, if we are able to get the biosafety cabinets for 26 of them ready, we can boost the number of activated GeneXpert machines in the country.

“The GeneXpert machines have four modules which allow you to test four samples at a time and the good thing about them is that they give you your results in a much faster time – within 45 minutes to 1 hour. So you can wait to get your results with the GeneXpert machine much faster.”

The GeneXpert machine is part of the high throughput testing platforms proposed by NCDC to increase testing, as there are 400 GeneXpert machines across the country.

  3. If there's a significant enough rise when the lockdown is relaxed (more people moving about and creating a hotbed for more contamination), the FG will enforce the lockdown again I guess. I pray none of us or our loved ones will be infected, in Jesus name, amen.

  4. Health education is poor and almost useless

The local man either doesn't understand the full benefit of social distancing and improving hygiene talkless of facemask OR he believes he cannot catch it as na big man disease OR it doesn't even exist

When below intelligence people are policy makers they will talk about machines to react to the problem and NEVER strategic ways to PREVENT the problem (proactiveness)

  5. you are all unsympathetic fools until you contract the virus. my first cousin is still at the isolation centre fighting for his life and we have not been sleeping at all praying for him to get well. He works with Schlumberger and has everything anyone would wish for at 36yrs a shining loving light in his family and some of you are here typing wicked comments that its is fake. Wait until you or your family member contracts it. This is insensitive to families who have loved loved ones. Be careful all of you that buy 50naira data just to spew lies and hate. Be careful

I’ll gladly be healthy and be buying my #50 data than be self made and be struggling for my life in an isolation Centre. Onye onu Ojo

  6. Dull people in government.until their system is purged of corruption, the fight against COVID-19 would be a mirage.I keep saying that you cannot tell people to stay at home when they have nothing to eat.The necessary measures were not put in place and the huge amount of money budgeted to alleviate the suffering has been siphoned. How will Nigerians obey the order? Is that not preposterous? In as much as hunger pervades the land, the effort of curbing the spread of COVID-19 would be an effort in futility. You cant tell me to stay at home when my family is dying of hunger.E make sense?
