Governor Wike Explains Why He Demolished 2 Hotels

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has given reasons why he demolished Prodest Hotel in Alode and Etemeteh Hotel in Onne, both in Eleme Local Government Area of the state.

Wike said the hotels were demolished after it violated an Executive Order on COVID 19, despite warnings from the State government.

The Governor said that the focus on hotels was because one of the coronavirus cases in the state spread the virus from a hotel.

Wike who monitored the demolition of Prodest Hotel, Alode, Eleme said his action was in line with the Rivers State Government Executive Order 6, which banned the operation of hotels across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State.

Governor Wike told newsmen at the demolition scene that the law must be obeyed, hence the State Government’s decision to enforce it.
According to him; “Government has no alternative but to apply the Executive order which I signed before the lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt. I called all the Traditional Rulers and Council Chairmen and told them to ensure that no hotel operates in the State.

“We are not saying it will be forever. This is for now so that we know where we are. To reduce the cases and check the spread.

“Whether you are PDP or not, all we are saying is that nobody is above the law. If we can do this to a PDP person, then you know we are not discriminatory. Everyone must obey. Whether you are in the PDP, SDP or no party, you must obey the law. If any other person does the same thing, the same rule will apply.

“We said no hotel should operate within this period. Unfortunately, the PDP Youth Leader in Eleme joined others to flout the Executive Order. Therefore, the executive order will be applied.

“We said if any hotel operates, the government will bring down that hotel. We are doing what we have told people that we are going to do.

“Nobody wants to obey any rules. We are saying just for now, keep off, let us see how we can keep our people safe.

“Look at the rate of infections, most of these people are found in hotels. Look at the man that died, he was at Mingi Hotel in Rumumasi. Due to that contact, we have had other seven cases.

“People should help us and support the Government for Rivers people to be safe. The Security Council will meet to review the strategies and achievements or setbacks, moving forward.

“All we are doing is to protect our people. Some people may not like our strategies, but our objective is to achieve results. ”

Governor Wike reiterated his declaration that no hotel should operate anywhere in the state, adding that the Managing Director of the hotel at Onne has been arrested.

    8. The said hotel pdp youth leader’s hotel is an accommodation for prostitues and they were hosting parties and disregarding the law simply because he’s a pdp leader. At first when the task force came to close it down, the man shot at one of them. That was how the case escalated, the owner disappeared into thin air and Wike had to be called in. The law had to be enforced as Wike promised and Wike has put a 5million Naira bounty on him for anyone who can bring him in.

  7. No, Mr. Governor, this is too extreme. The punishment, simply does not fit the crime. The operator could have been taken in, for a quick in and out. Arrest, charge and release in personal recognizance, with a later appearance in court for either a hearing with fines imposed or a seven day jail sentence. Guess Wike is above the law and the operator, will be scared to sue the state for damages.
    What a shame.

    11. Olodo. Who makes a law in a state? Did this pass through the Rivers house of assembly? A governor sits down and signs a draconian executive order and you come to internet to call it a law. Your school fees is a waste.

Let me tell you how to make law. When Peter Obi wanted to start demolishing houses of kidnappers, he first of all sent the bill to Anambra house of assembly. They debated on it and as usual in parliament, there was public hearing where stakeholders contributed. The whole process took some time. At the end of the day, the bill was passed as what the people want and Obi now signed it into law. When he demolished kidnappers building, did you see this kind of backlash?

Something as demolition is not something you wake up an say your word is law. What Wike did is an overkill. It is like using a sledgehammer to kill an ant just because you can afford it. There are commensurate punishments for issues as flouting covid orders and Wike should know it. May God forgive you for supporting this glaring act of wickedness.

  11. It is primitive, unnecessary and indefensible to demolish that hotel which as well employs his people and pays tax in a struggling economy. The governor had the option to seal these hotels and fine the operators' heavily but chose to walk this path of malevolence. Tufiakwa!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wike would have just temporally seal and prosecute the owners.
Demolishing somebody's source of livelihood is a hostile thing to do this trying period. Fight corona virus and leave peoples properties alone, not obeying lockdown is not a criminal offence.

    ReplyDelete
  15. ...but why is no one talking about the man who went against the laid down rules? The law was that any hotel that operates will be demolished. Why didnt the hotel owner adhere to the rules? They will be treating covid cases in hotel rooms. It's not right now. If he (wike) had turned a blind eye, I am certain other hotel and business owner will start running their business and thereby putting the state in a bad situation.

    4. Even if the man did party with 1000 people. Demolition of a structure is over kill. After demolition what would happen next. Would it stop the virus if it is determined to spread. Deter people how? It is over kill, this is like killing an ant with a sledge hammer. Even arresting the man and imprisoning him is better. Fine him the amount of money he will feel the bite. But out right destruction of property is very useless.

    7. All over the world people are disobeying the lockdown instructions.

To hell with Wike, so they disobeyed and you bring down a building?? Really?

In the uk, the stay at home directive isn't criminalised. They know there is a crisis but on the other hand, the government is being careful not to totally infringe on the right of its citizen which is the right to movement.

The police will send you back home or fine you If you err. People have held house parties, picnics and when the police is tipped off, they shutdown the party/ gathering, they fine whoever they think needs to be fined.

Nobody is killing any1, arresting or destroying properties because a lockdown directive was disobeyed, hian.
