Septuagenarian Arrested For Insulting President Buhari Given Option Of 18 Months Jail Term Or N30k

A 70-year-old man, Lawal Izala, was reportedly sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in a court sitting in Katsina State on Tuesday.

The Septuagenarian was arrested last week for allegedly insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Aminu Masari.

Izala and two others were arraigned for inciting disobedience to civil authorities and disrespect to authorities through demeaning utterances.

But speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Izala said he spoke out of anger when he visited his village and found out that bandits had killed his family members and rustled 15 of his cows.

Delivering judgement on the matter, the court found Izala guilty of two count charges of inciting violence and disrespect for civil authorities.

He was sentenced to six months jail term for the first charge and one year for the other charge.
Izala was however, given the option of ₦10,000 fine for the first charge and N20,000 for the second offence.

SaharaReporters gathered that some kind-hearted fellows in the state paid the N30,000 fine and the 70-year-old had been released.

  3. Is buhari a good man? It will never be well with leaders in this country Amen.

They cannot control herdsmen but are quick to put anyone in jail if you speak bad.

Good for you people. You all should enjoy the change.

  4. Another daily reminder that we are in a totalitarian or autocratic regime.
The tales of the man who was arrested for naming his dog "Buhari" is still fresh in our memories.
Cross River, the journalist who was incarcerated for months for insulting the Governor/inciting violence.
While I won't condone the actions of anyone inciting violence, the government must learn to exercise restraints.
Go to Twitter, and see the way Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, et Al are lampooned, insulted and denigrated. Even Trump joins the fray and labels his "enemies" with all kinds of names: Sleepy Joe, Cryin Schumer, Lamestream Media, Do Nothing Democrats, what have you.

  9. It's good, let the judgment start from North. They can't take what they dished to other leaders before them.
Goodluck is laughing last after all.

  10. If Trump was arresting everyone who insulted him, almost half of his people will be in jail.

    Boris Johnson isn't spared either.

Buhari should stop being unnecessarily sensitive, except for libel/slander, it is just ridiculous arresting someone because you were insulted Mr President.
